1 Corinthians 13 - a Contemporary Paraphrase

Rate: 1 Flag
If I speak with great eloquence and conviction, but do so without love, my words are little more than bombastic bellowing and grating noise.

And though I have the power to speak for God and understand every mystery and comprehend all knowledge, and if I have the kind of faith that could move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

And though I give away everything I own, and even if I offer my own body as a sacrifice to the flames of fire, but have not love, I have gained nothing.

Love is patient and kind. Love does not envy, nor is it arrogant or proud. Love is not rude; it is not self-seeking, not easily provoked, and does not dwell on evil. Love does not rejoice at injustice, but rejoices in the truth. Love endures all things with patience, and in every situation love maintains it's faith, hope and perseverance. Love never fails.

The day will come when prophecies fail, tongues will cease and knowledge itself will end. For now we know only a little and our ability to speak for God is limited, but when all is brought to completion, the partial will pass away.

When I was I child, I spoke as a child, thought as a child and reasoned like a child. But when I matured, I quit my childish ways.

For now our vision is limited, as though we were looking into a mirror darkened and distorted, but then we shall see face to face. Now I know only in part, but then I will know even as I am fully known.

And so it is that faith, hope and love live and dwell within us, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Amen, and a brilliant translation of the passage. Without love there truly is nothing. Now to get people to understand what the L-word means...
Thanks again, AJ . . . my most dedicated reader award goes to you (no cash involved, however. Sorry.).
