Harry Crews, Writer of Dark Fiction, Is Dead at 76 -

Rate: 1 Flag
Novelist Harry Crews has died. As a bookseller, Crews wasamong the hardest of authors to recommend to readers looking for a new author,as his themes were steeped, drenched, saturated in the tradition of Southerngrotesquery that made Flannery O'Conner and Carson McCullers notable. Crews, though, went deeper, got dirtier, got sicker that all the others and created asurreal, obscene and supremely satiric body of work that featured resilientheroes who were less heroic than they were stubborn, stupid or blessed with thelast trace of good luck a cruel God would allow the world. Booze, sex, misfits, random perversion, he was the writer you read after you finishedreading Willliam Burroughs  with theconclusion that you have read through the darkest corridors of America's sicksense of itself. Crews is just the writer to give someone a vivid idea that thedepths of our rooted irrationality have only been lightly mined. The purecreations of America go insane. So said William Carlos Williams.

He sounds like my kind of writer. Sorry to hear about his loss. R
