- I am a 55 year old mother and wife who considers herself a progressive. I write a blog about midlife and all that I find interesting, disappointing, scary, funny and otherwise about it. I am a midwesterner and generally like to keep things clear and simple.

These days, everything comes into question. Who and what is going to get my time and energy? Do I really want to keep everything I've accumulated? Now that my schedule and activities are not dictated by being present for my kids' interests, where do I want to go and what do I want to do?
Admittedly, I can sometimes be cranky, opinionated or even downright judgmental, but above all I am trying to be honest, forthright and in integrity with myself and my loved ones. I am often much more amused by myself than some people think I should be.

Of 'Roid Rage, Exhaustion and Happy News Items
I know it has been a while, which is why I will speak to the second topic first. I’ve not had any energy to speak of these recent weeks – not depression, although not having any energy can get me down a bit – just an indescribable level of fatigue/exhaustion that… Read full post »

Baseball and Forgiveness
There’s been a great deal of baseball affinity expressed here recently; I wanted to add this to the mix. It is one of the first pieces I wrote when I started writing in 2003 and it remains one of my favorite efforts, probably based more in sentimentality than merit, but I… Read full post »
The Breakdown
Yesterday I cleaned my sectional sofa, known to some as the “man-eating couch”. We splurged on it the first year that I was home. It is a soft butter yellow colored, microfiber, overstuffed, L-shaped, huge thing with a chaise on one end, a recliner on the other, anoth… Read full post »
Weenie or Penis? St Patrick's Day Parade, New Orleans
My sister Mary called me in mid-January with the news that there were some great airfares available into New Orleans. She was excited that I might be able to come during Mardi Gras and do some parades with her. She especially wanted me to see “Muse, The Shoe Parade” whic… Read full post »

Leaving for New Orleans
I leave for New Orleans today. I have been struggling for days, beating back the edges of my depression. I feel like someone replaced my prescription with placebo pills. I am hoping that the sun and blossoming and warmth and the company of my sister and her dog, Maggie… Read full post »
Pre - New Orleans
I’ll be leaving Thursday to visit my sister in Louisiana. I’ll be flying in to New Orleans for the weekend where my sister’s husband lives and she will meet me there for the weekend that is to include the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and a tour to see the… Read full post »
If $ Were no Object
Sometimes I like to daydream about what amenities I would bring into my life if money were not an object. I’m not talking about a “if I won the lottery, I would create a charity, pay off my friends’ mortgages, build a hotel just for homeless people, take my entire extended… Read full post »
Today
Today is the kind of day we southeastern Wisconsinites remember why we stuck it out all winter. It is for the sheer pleasure of enjoying a day like today. Read full post »
A slab of bacon won my heart this morning
We had some friends from “up north” stop by Saturday afternoon. They spent the night and left Sunday morning. My husband made a trip to the grocery store Saturday night so we could send them off with a proper breakfast the next day.
I awoke Sunday morning around… Read full post »
How Long Does it Take to Remember Cliche?
In my case, about a month. My husband and I saw the movie “Gran Torino” in January. We both gave it about a 3 out of 5 – pretty good, but flawed. The big detraction for me was the way that some of the minor characters seemed to be over caricatured. … Read full post »

Gingerbread Toilet
When I run, I get flushed. When a toilet gets flushed, it is not supposed to run. It is supposed to fall silent, after a brief interval: there should be no ripples in its little body of water. I make these statements as a backdrop to what I am about to/… Read full post »
Multiple Births and One Death
Today is my mother’s birthday; she is 76. She gave birth to eleven children the old-fashioned way – one at a time. She conceived the old-fashioned way too, regular sex and Catholicism being strong contributing factors. She gave birth to me first, when she was 20;… Read full post »
The coverage of the Republicans on the stimulus has been so
lopsided that my TV fell off its stand. I said that late in the day on Friday. I had to turn my TV off. I couldn’t watch it all crooked on the floor like that anyway. After days of listening to Boehner, Graham, Kyl, McCain et. al. carrying on about how… Read full post »
By Way of Introducing Myself...
I want to get a post up here that says a little bit more about me and my writing than a quick-burst rant about Dick Cheney. I have recently read that one of the marks of an amateur writer is using “top ten” lists, but I wrote this piece before I… Read full post »
Why does Dick Cheney still get a microphone?
I'm listening 1600 Pennsylvania Ave on MSNBC and the teasers about Dick Cheney's "dire" warnings that we are in danger of another terrorist attack because of Obama's policies. Isn't this the guy that said we would be greeted as liberators - that the insurgency was in its last throes? Didn… Read full post »
