Mary in Florida (1980)
Valentine's Day has always been a special time in our house, and for Mary (DogWoman) it's one of her favorite days of the year. On Saturday, just before going to a folk music Valentine's Day Concert here in town, I presented her with the poem below. Given how she shared her valentine to me earlier, it seems fitting I should do the same.
As background, James Taylor remains Mary's favorite singer and songwriter. When the album Never Die Young came out in 1988 she was eager to have it, and was especially looking forward to listening to his song "Valentine's Day." The song, however, is far from the romantic ballad she was hoping for -- with its dark take on love and broken relationships.
To counterbalance this, I composed new lyrics for "Valentine's Day" to the same James Taylor tune. This version is for my girl, and tells of our relationship during senior year in college when we finally realized after years of friendship that we were meant for each other.
So here it is, side by side with the original lyrics. To hear the song, click the link below.
