The Boehner Family Budget Deficit

Rate: 4 Flag

John Boehner's argument in this debt ceiling debate is that Washington needs to operate under the same economic principles as the American family.  He maintains that like your household budget, when debt gets out of hand in Washington, we need to cut spending.

But Boehner misses a point and my guess is he misses it deliberately.  In the "family budget" that is Washington, there are more than one or two bread winners.

The Washington government family is like the typical American family with moms and dads working to support themselves and their children, but unlike the typical American family, the Washington government family has a wealthy uncle who has a private suite on the top floor of the house.

This uncle pays a share of the mortgage and utilities.  He also convinced the family to make significant home improvements to the house, mostly benefitting him with an expanded balcony off his suite, Italian marble bath, and three car garage to house his collection of sports cars.   He assured them that the money was all there in the house; all they had to do was remortgage the property and there would be plenty of money.

This same uncle, through his status as majority shareholder of the local mill, sent the jobs overseas to enrich his personal portfolio even though it resulted in the unemployment of the mom & dad who lived downstairs.

So now we are at a point where mom & dad have found a few lower paying part time jobs, their kids can no longer afford piano lessons or a vacation at the beach and the bank is calling every month because the mortgage is close to default.   Refinancing is not possible because contrary to the uncle's advice, the house is worth far less than the amount of the mortgage.  In short, the family is looking at becoming homeless unless someone does something.

They've already cut back.  They've already agreed to work harder for lower wages and fewer benefits.  What this family needs is for the uncle to be responsible, behave as American families do and help his family.

The only problem is that in Boehner's world, the uncle accepts no responsibility for the plight of his impoverished family.  What Boehner's proposed budget would do is transfer ownership of the house to the uncle where he could charge rent to his relatives, maybe even evict them if he thought their credit was not worthy.  Where would they go?  Who knows?  Who cares?  Yeah, just another example of good old Republican Family Values.

Ab-so-lutely. Nicely put. Rated.
Exactly! Why is it so hard for them to understand how ridiculous this sounds?

Read, rated, shared! This should be made into an anti Tea Party commercial! Excellent post!
Guess what, the uncle is now broke also. The uncle can't pick up the tab. So what is a family to do? Make the tough decision and cut some more. The other solution is to end it all. Just because you think you have cut it all doesn't mean that you can skip out and keep it all.
Catnlion, the uncle is far from broke.
A typical CEO got a 23% RAISE last year and corporate profits are at Record Levels. We are a nation that is flush with cash. The uncle is loaded, he just does not want to pay his fair share and take care of his own family.
Okay, I'm going to ask you what I've asked others who won't answer, they just call names and go on. Kenny just called me a name and told me to research it. How do I research someone else's opinion? You have to give it to me.

Tell me what my "fair share" is. How do you define it so that I can sit down and figure out what I owe?
Catnlion,
I do not see anyone calling you names here.
What is a fair share? "Fair" is a agreement that is mutually agreed upon by all parties free from bias, dishonesty, or injustice. Fair is not back room deals filled with high paid lobbyists getting congress to write special loopholes in the tax code to where guys like Malcolm Forbes pay a lower percentage of income than the secretary he employs. And that's just for starters. Fair is knowing that the wealth of this nation is the property of the people, who, by their laws, have created it, and who may therefore by other laws dispose of it, whenever the welfare of the people requires it. It is for the people to decide, not the idle rich. That is what we know to be "fair".
But you can't write laws like that. You have to put a number on it. So give me a number we can put in the law. What happens if you want say 75% and everybody else wants 25%. Do you get to say they didn't pay their "fair share"? Exactly who decides? Do we have to have a national vote? Congress has already decided and passed laws, with numbers in them, to say what they think the fair share is. President Obama sounds like the lamb.

A pack of wolves are standing around a lamb. The lamb says it's not fair. The wolves say they get to decide what's on the menu. What chance does the lamb have?
