Weekend Film Warrior 8/13: Expendable Pilgrim Full Of Love
By Ace Hunter
Well it's nice to see that movie goers finally figured out "Inception" and have moved on to more high brow entertainment such as "The Other Guys", since it ended up in first place last weekend. No accounting for taste, I suppose.
This weekend is a busy one, with no less than three major quest items up for grabs. No doubt one of these will claim the top spot, as we have just about every major demographic covered, from beef jerky eating dudes to gay Julia Roberts lovers, to tweens who think Michael Cera is hot.
Sigh. Some weeks I wonder why I even bother.
A team of mercenaries (led by Sylvester Stallone) head to South America to overthrow a dictator (David Zayas) and a rouge CIA operative (Eric Roberts). It seems writer/director/star Stallone finally got all of these action heroes (Jet Li and Bruce Willis among the endless list) in the same film at once, but who cares? An overstuffed cast usually means everyone is fighting for screen time when they should be fighting the bad guys instead. Besides, does Dolph Lundgren really need to be seen in an A budget film? Hey Stallone, the 80's called. They want their action heroes back.
Cheshire Cat grinning Julia Roberts stars as a happily married woman who realizes her life needs to go in a different direction and takes off on a round the world journey. Huh. Must be nice to have money. When my life needed to go in a different direction, I went from working at Wendy's to working at Taco Bell. Based on Elisabeth Gilbert's best selling memoir, this film will no doubt test your tolerance levels for watching Roberts find her soul in some third world shithole.
Super pussy Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes in order to win her heart. Another film based on yet another comic book. I've certainly had enough of those for one summer, as well as watching Cera wuss his way through another film. Think I'll go watch director Edgar Wright's masterful "Shaun of the Dead" instead.
Let the questing begin!

"Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" is the best comic strip movie since "Muriel."
Alas.
