The things you learn in a fog

Rate: 16 Flag

Tonight a thick fog fell over our neighborhood and the light at dusk was beautiful so I grabbed Hailey and my camera and ran out to capture a few shots in the moments before it got too dark. I concentrated on the foggy river banks and the glow of the lamplight, while Hailey amused herself by pretending we were spies on a secret mission, or by peering under mushrooms for signs of fairies. Every time I thought I had the perfect shot Hailey would rush into the frame, but instead of asking her to move and I'd let her stand in the shot and shoot it to get the light right until she would run off to chase dragon flies or to insist that she saw a sea-monster in the water below.

What I found though is that my favorite pictures from the day were the ones with her in them, even though at the time I thought she was a bit in the way. I wonder when that changes? When do I become the bother to her? When does she wait impatiently for me to step back out of the frame so that she can take her shot?

I hope it's longer than I think.

I hope its longer than we all think! Beautiful pictures and beautiful words.
I hope it's longer than I think? Truer words were never spoken. Hate to break it to you, but it isn't. Neat stuff.
Wow beautiful photos. No it is not long enough! Spoken from mom of 23yo daughter. Enjoy R
Beautiful sentiments. That first shot is amazing with the contrast of her red clothes to the creepiness of the fog.

Oh, and it's wrong to pee on mushrooms looking for fairies? I still keep trying - I know they're out there!
" instead of asking her to move and I'd let her stand in the shot "

wise mom. lovely photos for your lovely parable
Wow! This post will lead my heart today.
I'm just now "stepping out of the frame" to give my son his shot. It breaks your heart yet fills it with pride and hope at the same time.

Gorgeous pictures and sentiments.

Having grown up in a fog of a different hue, I can totally to the max assure you that Hailey's fairies will sprinkle pixie dust all OVER her dawning memories, and that looming monster whatevers notwithstanding, she'll want to share her pictures with you.

Whew. Nice.
They grow up too fast. Mine is 27. Hug her lots. Merry Christmas.
Just found your blog (thanks, Kathy Riordan!) - stunning work. Funny as HELL, then with this you go all beautiful and poignant and all. I've got 6 grandkids, so even if your kid grows up, you get another chance to see the magic when they have kids, if you're lucky. Rated.
Those images are somehow both haunting and cheerful.

The words are sparse and fit perfectly with the images.

Just masterful.
Very simply and effectively told. Wonderful use of images. Dreamy.
lovely- the words, the pictures, everything
