I teach Social Studies for Special Ed. students. The last two weeks and the next three weeks until the election, I have chosen to teach them about voting, Why they need to pay attention and the basics of the voting system. We watched a few minutes of the first debate, but the second debate I decided they needed to take a more active role in watching. so I gave them paper with the name of each participant on one side and numbered it one to five. I asked them to write down at least 5 facts total about what they said and from that decide who they think the winner was.
Since they are special ed. I had to guide them so I started the program and wrote down facts when each one was talking on the board and paused inbetween and talked about what they said to make sure they were catching it. Some things they did get and somethings they didn't. What was the most profound thing I got from them was they were SURE they were going to start cold cocking each other at any minute. As the debate wore on and they started getting up closer to each other and shaking their fingers at each other they were saying. "Are they doing to fight? It looks like their going to fight. Do they ever fight at debates?" They were very disturbed that the people running for president were getting so heated at each other. The other thing they didn't like was when Obama kept calling Romney a liar. Yeah, he said he wasn't telling the truth...but they knew he was calling him a liar.
So I hope at the next debate the kids can watch it without being so disturbed by their actions. The facts were lost on them because of they way they were talking to each other. They live in a relatively poor community where most of their parents have learned the art of "living off the system." Parents don't care so much about their kids getting an education as they do care that they get classified as disabled so they can collect money off of them.
These kids see enough fighting and harrassment at home. They hear people being called liar at home all the time. I think they had a hope down inside that people who were president didn't act that way. Too bad they were wrong. People are people, and rich people like Obama and Romney will get up in your face just like their peers and their parents do.I hope the next one is more civilized or I won't bother showing it to them.
