The story so far: Linc has heard voices since he was a kid, but they’re not what they seem. He can hear other people’s thoughts, but the ability has left him friendless and homeless. When a mysterious group tracks him down and offers to help him, Linc isn’t sure what to think. Once he joins them he meets others like him, but can he trust them…

Chapter 7
Linc closed the door behind him, being careful to keep it from snapping loudly. There was nobody around to her it closing, but he took the precaution nonetheless. He took the disrupter from his pocket, Moira hadn’t asked and he hadn’t offered it back, and rolled it in a socket before hiding it in the bottom of his closet. He wondered how long the battery would last, but didn’t ask how to turn it off.
Moira might not even know since she had only stolen it earlier that day, although he suspected she knew more than she let on. When he had asked her about Genetitech she had been too blasé about her answers. Linc just couldn’t believe that she hadn’t wondered more about the origins of the company. Maybe he was being paranoid again, maybe she really was that oblivious, but it didn’t square with the rest of her actions. During her instruction she had been very much in control, not the type of person who would accept what she was told without scrutiny.
Linc stripped off his shirt, which still smelled pleasantly of the night air and freedom, and folded it neatly before putting it away. He did the same with his pants. It had been a long while since he had decent clothing and he wanted them to last. Especially since he wasn’t sure how long he was going to stick around this place, these new clothes might have to last him a long while. More than once he had been tempted to bolt while they were out tonight, only to reconsider. There were just too many unanswered questions for him to walk, or run, away yet. He hoped that there would be other opportunities to escape should the need arise, otherwise he would regret not taking his chance.
