Linc, A Serialized Novel, Part 206

Rate: 0 Flag

Previously on Linc: Linc has heard voices since he was a kid, but they’re not what they seem. He can hear other people’s thoughts, but the ability has left him friendless and homeless. A mysterious corporation, Genetitech, tracks him down and offers to train him to use his skills. He soon learns that there are others with strange power like him, and when Genetitech is raided he is forced to go onto the run with one of them.

Moira must have been following a path of some sort, because she was moving so quickly, but the trees were so thick that Linc couldn't discern one. Even following directly in her path it seemed like he was managing to walk into every low-hanging branch and stray spider web in the woods. Linc kept wiping the cobwebs off of his face and head, but couldn’t seem to get them to totally clear off; he knew he was going to be patting himself for spiders for days.

"Are you sure you know where you're going?" Linc asked after he walked into about the fortieth branch.

"I’m not the one running into everything like I'm a blind man," she replied, "but yes, I know where we’re going. We're almost to one of the main paths. I had a couple of years to explore this island and it's not very big, so I know it pretty well."

"Why do you think they put their old building on this island? It's kind of a supervillian thing to do," Linc said.

"They were worried we might be dangerous, but can't imagine why," she said. "They wanted it to be out of the way so no regular folks would get hurt if one of us went nuts. Here's the path."

Moira pushed a branch out of her way and took a step up. The branch almost swung right back into Linc's face, but he ducked just in time. When he looked back up, she had disappeared behind a tree. Linc climbed up a small berm and found himself on a path of packed dirt. It looked like Moira was right after all.

"Good?" Moira asked and when he nodded she turned to her left. "The building isn't very far now."
