Linc, A Serialized Novel, Part 248

Rate: 0 Flag

Previously on Linc: Linc has heard voices since he was a kid, but they’re not what they seem. He can hear other people’s thoughts, but the ability has left him friendless and homeless. A mysterious corporation, Genetitech, tracks him down and offers to train him to use his skills. He soon learns that there are others with strange power like him, and when Genetitech is raided he is forced to go onto the run with them.

"Gee, thanks," Moises said and stooped over to hoist Eva up.

Linc did the same and in moments she dangled between them, much as she had back at Genetitech. Linc realized that had been several hours before and yet she still hadn't stirred. He worried that maybe she had somehow destroyed her own mind with the power she had unleashed. It also felt like a warning to him about what could happen if he lost controls of his abilities; not only could he hurt others but he could hurt himself.

The thought reminded him of the fight on the island and the injuries he had both sustained and inflicted. He reached up with his unencumbered right hand ran it over his face, which was all knotted up and felt like a bag of marbles to the touch. His nose might be crooked now, but he couldn't be sure until the swelling went down and he took a look in a mirror. He supposed it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, it wasn't like he was too concerned about how he looked before. It certainly could have been worse, especially compared to how the gunman ended up.

Now that he was getting farther away from the fight, and the visceral sensation of fear he had felt in the moment, he was starting to doubt his decision to use his ability on the gunman. Surely, there was some other way that he could have found to subdue the gunman. If he had been able to hold out just a little longer, he thought, Moira could have made it in time to help him out. He couldn't think about it anymore, he had to keep focused and keep moving until they were safe. They carried Eva to the truck and set her down so that she was leaning against it like she was passed out drunk. She didn't look very good and if somebody happened by right now they probably would be arrested for assaulting her.
