Note: Weekends and Editor's Picks

Rate: 21 Flag

As you all know, Open Salon never sleeps. Ever since we launched the site, many of you have been posting, commenting and rating 24 hours a day, seven days a week -- and we're thrilled. But as many of you have surely noticed, there are some times of the week when the editors aren't around to give your work the attention (with Editor's Picks, and cover placement) we'd like to give it -- most notably, on weekends.

I wanted to make it official: While we check in on the site on Saturdays and Sundays (and do our best to keep track of spammers), we can't guarantee that we'll be able to promote your work as much as we'd like to on those days. If you're planning on publishing a blockbuster post, and you want us to see and promote it (with an EP, an Open Salon cover spot, or space on Salon itself), you may want to save it for Monday through Friday (until about 5 p.m., EST) when we'll do our best to give it the love it deserves.

It would seem to go without saying, but thank you for saying it.
Official is always good -think of all the meta-posts you just prevented!
Now you tell me! Oh, well, better late than never.
*phew* Now I can drink all weekend!
You exist! You really exist! Do you live in a Dick-Cheney-style bunker?

Thanks for the info - nice to know someone's paying attention.
:-)

Thanks for clarifying.

How dare you guys sleep and stuff...
Definitely better to know than to not know.
I love official, have you considered an outfit for Official decrees? Freaky is good with uniforms.

I figured as much. But...but can you get a random generator that moves the pictures around?
Thanks Thomas. I knew I was getting the "What Would Joan Crawford Do?" piece in just under the wire but I was waiting on my friend Greg Franklin to get me the cartoon that illustrates it. It was really worth the wait too.
I'm working on a blockbuster post right now. Did you know they're closing over 900 stores?? Wait till Monday for details!
Good advice. I wasn't sure how you guys operate. I said the same thing about my surgeons.
Kind of assumed that was the case. There has been some speculation that it is better to post at particular times of the day, too.
It was more fun thinking you were all robots and garden furniture salespeople.
I'm ashamed to admit it but I kinda already figured that out! Now about that "space on Salon" comment...guess there's always more to learn and dream about.
Well, we're definitely not robots, but Kerry does always seem to want to sell me garden gnomes
Unfortunately, that just doesn't work for me. Living in Arizona, I'm already three hours behind you East Coasters. And as an amateur with a day job, my only times to write are evenings and weekends. Waiting to post sounds good, but I seldom have ANY time during your business hours at all.

So folks, take it from me. I'm a terrific writer with very few EPs to my name. Come read my stuff at nights and on the weekends.
Clarity is always a good thing. Thanks! I was actually trying to imagine what it would be like to have to sift through the posts and make those decisions. Ouch. Not easy. So have a relaxing weekend!
Wouldn't it be fun if a truly random generator would select weekend posts and put them on the cover for, say three hours or so until they were rotated off and replaced with new ones?
I have a request. Can the Updates on the right have more than 8 slots? I follow more than 8 people and as I don't spend all day every day on OS (I know, I know) I seem to be missing quite a bit of my favorites's posts and I really do want to see what everyone is up to...
I am happy to see someone pop right out and say these policies. I do not understand why some posts never make the cover, and now understand the week end thing.
But the whole EP policies of this site do need to be clarified for one and all.
I do love a place where the lights are always on and a story teller is up and running. Thanks Guys. You Ed's do good work here.
Thomas, you mean now we are condemned to have the beheading image for say almost 60 hours? Sorry, Bob, love your writing but that image is rather disturbing for a weekend image.
Good to know...thanks!

@Cindy Ross: oh sure, you're so special you get your OWN time zone too? I knew it. Here in Phoenix proper, It's only 2 hours behind now...
Thanks for the information. I'll be sure to post all my junk on the weekends and my masterpieces during office hours only:)
Nonono Caroline, you have it backwards!!!
What planet you reporting from, Spotted?? It's 3:05 right now. Take a look at the time stamp--they're three hours ahead, I tell ya!
Let me know if I should repost my "alternative" EPs for you to add to your own posts:

Editor Picked Someone Else
Editor's Clique
Editor's Sick
Winner of Pulitzer Prize
I'm with the surly girl---I 'll save the weekends for drinking!
I figured that, though it is nice to hear it and I appreciate the thought. Now, get back to work, you slacker and go read some of my work. You've been ignoring me long enough and I'm sick of it! I need my validation, Damn it! Oh, and BTW, have a great weekend. Peace.
That there is what us writers call sarcasm.
So it's official, Tink's post will be forever limited to the vampires of Open Pick!!! Hurray!!!

9am - 5pm??

~boohoohoo~ What about the midnight to 6am posters?

THE SHAME! THE SHAME!!

~runs from the room~

Nah, just kidding, we all figured you guys didn't use the full potential of the EP-Picker 6000 to randomly pick EPs after 6pm till 8:55am. It's okay. We understand.

~wanders off to go research his next article -- HOW TO TELL YOU'RE A VAMPIRE ON OPEN!!!
See, this totally thwarts my new plan of drunk-posting on Saturday nights. Or maybe it gives me permission...

Please enjoy your weekends! They only happen once a week!
@Cindy Ross: testing....
Great. I can post those naked pics this weekend now. And that blockbuster I-finally-got-close-enough-to-the-loon money shot.
Well that's stupid. Crap. Did they turn clocks ahead/back already???? I guess I missed it. Okay, I'm stupid, and I stand corrected.

But I still am unsure of what planet I am from.
I just want to know if the deputy editor of Open Salon gets a badge and a spiffy uniform. Hmmm, Thomas Rogers? Do you?
I am so disappointed mon... I always saved my best stuff for the weekend, now I gotta' hang with some surly person I met here!
CindyRoss,
For crying out loud, I'm in SoCal. One thing I try to do is write my post and load it into OS. The next morning I'll log on and publish it. Voila, problem solved.
How will I know what to read?
Wally Baby, for crying out loud! Glad that method works for you; it doesn't for me. I must be at work by 7 AM. I give myself 40 minutes in the morning to shower, throw on clothing, groom myself (comb through hair is usually all I get), take incontinent dog out, throw incontinent dog's soaking poochpad into washer with plenty of bleach, scrounge up breakfast, throw something in a bag for lunch, make sure the cats haven't left steaming tootsie rolls next to their litterbox in the kids' bathroom, prime them for more by topping off their chow, and then rush to car, hunting for name badge and work keys as I go. I don't have one spare minute, let alone the ten it would take to fire up the computer and get my blog posted. And I ain't getting up any earlier, not even for a (long) shot at an EP. Take that, you cantankerous old curmudgeon!!!
cindyross,
Cantankerous old curmudgeon?? Thank you. That's the nicest thing anyone's said to me all day. Just remember, I'm the "Cheap Bastid" too!
So since we're friends now, I'll just heap on the compliments, you irascible skinflint of a hound dog! But seriously, there have been a few times when I've posted in the morning. That's a bad sign and usually means I've had insomnia all night.
Dear Eds, many thanks for clarifying. I've been writing at strange hours and posting at even stranger hours pretty consistently. It really helps to know that! Being a newbie, it is of great help to hear it from you directly.

I was contemplating a career as a conspiracy theorist as a result of my recent affiliation with OS - thank you for sparing me! :)
Trying to think of something obsequious to say here. Failing.
That means we can go wild on the weekends!
Rich - that was priceless!!!!
When is the optimal times to post masturbation pieces?
In reference to the robots, there is no way to determine if we are interacting with a Turing capable A.I. No offense, but my gut says "Cylon."
And here I was ready to post that epic essay on the musical legacy and genius of Kip Winger this weekend.
Genuine blogger do not care you pick up or not, he is not writing to pleasing to anybody. He write only to express his innermost anguish or ecstasy which are haunting to him and want to express them so he may get relief.
Iam blogging from last four month, what kind of your editor`s pick up that I study carefully ,which blog are sensational, sexy, or useful to pull more advertise on your web that you are picking up.I have no objection for that after all how can anybody forget his selfishness.
Ooh, I'll be on the lookout for those pics, Kathy:)
Pics have been posted, Caroline.
That makes perfect sense. Meanwhile, its time to get my groove on!
@MJ: now that is sure to be an EP!
Fortunately my mega-posts runneth over. Well, *something* was runneth-ing over...
@marcelleqb and others
easiest way to follow your favorites is go to cover, click on most recent | posts| use arrow to change 'show:' window to 'favorites',
refresh once in a while. We can see 25 posts per page, 5 pages of posts so we can catch up with anyone who posted while we were asleep. Or set up a Google reader page, Artfish posted how to do that some time ago, just add all your favorites. On the cover, though, you can see stats for posts.
Hope this helps, we like to read lots of you.
~fat rocco rocket and feral rusty rough
Thank you for the official news!! Communication is greatly appreciated.
Thanks. I'll save my crappy posts for Sunday.
Thanks for the confirmation of how the schedule works ... one suggestion though ... is there any chance of doing a "roundup" of the weekend posts on Monday morning, to select a few to highlight? Just seems that since the world doesn't sleep, neither do the valuable stories on OS. Does it make sense to hold a post about something that happens in the world Friday, till Monday? It would be nice to know, at least, that the weekend posts will be reviewed at some point ...

That said, just want to say thanks for OS ... the hardest part of blogging isn't the actual blogging ... it's finding an audience for your blog ... OS provides a ready made audience, and various ways of highlighting quality posts ... and thats probably the most valuable addition to ANY blog ... so thanks for providing us an audience and a system :)
@ the rescuers: THANK YOU!
Thanks, I kind of figured it out but it is nice to have it acknowledged by a real live editor. Speaking for myself, I'd like to feel as though I was at least a part of what goes on and the best way IMHO is to communicate with us from time to time on policy and such. Editors need rest too.
I've been calling you all weekend, and now I know what you've been doing. Anyway, thanks for sharing!
Thanks. If I post a blockbuster I'll be sure you are the first to know!
Its really that simple!? I knew there had to be a method of some sort.
Thank you for some information! Information takes all the "mystery" out of things, which is good for OS!
What's the protocol for reposting something that I/We wrote and really loved but that got buried on a weekend?

Sorry for asking, but I haven't seen anything about this........
Since Salon started in SF, can't we break the East Coast monopoly, and have you guys check out things until 5pm Pacific Time, rather than Eastern Time? Lots of bloggers who don't live on the East Coast, ya know.

To be pedantic, 5pm Friday is 2pm in California. I mean, c'mon!
