The Dangerous Times We Live In

Rate: 8 Flag

Here is a quiz.  No awards for getting it right, but it is one single question you need to know the correct answer to:

“What is the single most dangerous thing facing American democracy today?”  (Waiting as the Syncopated Clock theme from Jeopardy plays in the background)

Time's up.  Turn over your cards.

You on the left – answer “Right wing lunatics bringing guns to public rallies.”

Sorry, wrong answer.

Right – you on the right, you answered “Creeping socialism”

Sorry, wrong again.

Centrists?  “Global warming.”

Nyet.  Oh sorry, that seems like a throwaway to those on the right.  At least I didn’t answer “nein” and get the jackboot wackos all worked up.

Audience members – those of you who can be heard against the background noise of birthers, 9-11 truthers, grassy knollers (ok, I’m with you there) and alien abductees, please don’t shout.  Don Pardo will walk the audience with a microphone.

The answer to “the most dangerous thing” question?  Fascism.  Not Islamo-fascism (whateverthefuck that is)  Real live fascism.  Coming to a government near you!

“When” you ask timidly?

As soon as the Supreme Court, lead by one of the leading corporate attorneys in the country, John Roberts, rules on Citizens United vs Federal Election Commission.     For those of you less inclined to read the deeper materials, here is the Wiki for the case.

“Aw, come on, this cant be as important as stomping out the Taliban, can it?”

Yes, I am afraid it can.  And it is.

Why?  How come?”

Because your vote will mean nothing (which, incidentally, is less than it means today), and your voice will be drown out.  I am talking about your First Amendment voice.  Fascism as described on the Library of economics and Liberty site  is “socialism with a capitalist veneer.”  Or perhaps you prefer the Wiki definition “Fascism comprises a radical and authoritarian nationalist political ideology and a corporatist economic ideology.”

In a nutshell, the Roberts Court has asked to review issues that have been settled precedent for some time now regarding corporate money in politics.  The case revolves around a film made by a conservative group titled “Hillary: The Movie” which was an attempt to denigrate then Senator Clinton and influence the upcoming presidential elections, back when she was the expected nominee.  The reason this is the most dangerous issue in America today is that you cannot find a single case where Roberts has ever ruled in favor of an individual against a corporation.  And with a 5-4 conservative majority (I am sorry, Conservatives, to have to co-opt your name to be used with the far right fascists, but it is up to you to reclaim it) there is no real mystery where this one will come out.

Rather than rewrite the whole case, I’ve tried to provide a few links to help you understand this for yourself.  Watching how much corporate money has flooded into the health care debate, and the effect it has had, I don’t think you can make a credible argument that corporations have an “equivalent level” of free speech as individuals.  Corporate money in the political arena is corrosive.  And if the health care debate doesn’t convince you of this, just wait until you see the energy lobby gear up for the next round of ads to defeat any meaningful alternative energy and global warming policies.

“A fascist is one whose lust for money or power is combined with such an intensity of intolerance toward those of other races, parties, classes, religions, cultures, regions or nations as to make him ruthless in his use of deceit or violence to attain his ends.”
Henry A Wallace, VP to FDR in 1944.

I love your passion and agree with you completely. However, America is asleep at the wheel and the snooze button is betting repeatedly hit. As Stephen McGuire wrote in his eloquent post today, there is not enough focus on the many and our system is set up to be concerned about the chosen few. Until we all wake up and change our thinking about it (or something horrible happens), things will get only worse. If we are lucky, they only might remain the same. I weep for our future. Very well written. Rated.
Holy, holy, cow Tim --- please keep writing. You are a force, you are fresh, and you are by far and away, a critical thinker in a way that both the left and right (and center) need to hear!!!

This is information EVERYONE needs to hear!

Now is the time - you have the voice. I will write in support of you, but I write from a more "call to arms", emotive place. You write form a deeply factual, flushed out, critically aware place for the political genre.

I wish they rotated the cover today so you would have gotten the attention this deserves. Argh.

THANK YOU!!!

Reddit, Digg, and noted on Twitter and shared with a few "like minded" friends. Great work.
Glad you came back to chime in on such a vitally passionate subject.
The Supreme Court was supposed to be the voice of reason, but politics have tainted opinions. I firmly believe that corporations have a strangle hold on ideology via finance and influence. We as a whole need to open our eyes and stop the thinking that, *there is nothing we can do.* This is not the future I envisioned as a young man. rAted!
Tim: thanks for calling attention to this. I will spend some time reading up on it at SCOTUS.
Wow - thank you, friends, for stopping in for a read and a comment! I am moved.
I wrote because as I watch the kabuki being played out, I just get so G-D frustrated. Like you, Cartouche, I am concerned about America asleep at the wheel. Chuck, yes, we all hope the SC is the point of balance. However, since the Nixon appointment of Lewis Powell, he of the "Powell Memorandum" (see http://reclaimdemocracy.org/corporate_accountability/powell_memo_lewis.html) even our highest court has been a home for the corporatists.
Kate, you are way more than kind. You, more than anyone got me off dead center and onto the blog. You may someday regret that! But for now, I'll tip my hat to you (which doesnt look as good as yours, I must say)
Dennis, I await further comment, either here or even better, on a post of your own. Your work is inspiring.
We are sheeple here Tim. And the government of the US is so tainted with corrosive money from the big corporations that they cannot see the absolute greed going on here.
Change can only happen if we make it happen.
This is a great post and deals with a subject that I was not aware of. Roberts voting record is frightening. Thanks for this.
Tim, I agree with cartouche and Kate...and wish this most excellent piece had been more exposed. I'm afraid you are very very right and I'm not sure how to get this message out. It's frightening and we are sure to become the proverbial rat in boiling water if we don't wake up.
I think that you are right.
I hope you're wrong. My wife has been up to her armpits in reading about the Court for a book club meeting today. From what she's been telling me, there is some hope for a good outcome on this, given the current thinking of the Nine. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
