off to the woods to get the tree
my dad takes only me
he holds me on his shoulders so
we know which one is tallest
and then we saw and saw some more
and drag it to the barn
and there it rests until mom says
It's time to decorate our nest
all day long we string garland
with berries and popcorn
some candy canes and ginger bread
the branches to adorn
cut limbs below so gifts will fit
she likes to green the mantel
we wait all day for limbs to drop
to light each and every panel
my favorite part besides the train
that circles neath the tree
and all the special balls and bows
is waiting there for me
I love to lay there on my back
and stare up to the top
imagine Santa with his sack
or listen to needles drop
the smell of pine through out the house
the glowing tree that shines
be silent quiet as a mouse
and watch beneath the pine
and for a month or so I make
two cups a little hotter
for each and every day it takes
a special sugar water
we never waste a single branch
a feeder it becomes
out to the yard it's winter dance
for birds to learn it's charm
and then one day when all is gone
we haul it to the barn
and soon a fire it will make
to keep us safe and warm
when Santa comes this year I'll spy
I'm waiting there a lot
he won't get past my little eye
I've got my favorite spot
