How do you pay tribute to a tragic death in a cartoon?

When I first heard about Amy Winehouse's death, via Twitter, the first thing I thought of was, "Oh, I have to do a cartoon about it."

I guess being a blogger for so many years, made me think something had to be said. And since I am doing cartoons these days, I naturally thought that that was the place to pay tribute. But since I do a humor panel, it really isn't the place. Perhaps if I did a political cartoon, that would be the place to pay tribute and leave a message regarding Amy.

It's an interesting quandry, how does a cartoonist pay tribute to someone who dies tragically? I did the funny cartoon recently about Alan Haberman, the man who invented the barcode, who recently died, but he didn't die tragically and enough time had gone by that I don't think it offended anyone. Plus, I didn't use his name.

But I just felt by paying tribute to Amy Winehouse, it would be an honor to her and her life and talent, and maybe be a message to those who might follow the unfortunate path of addiciton. But there really is no way to do that in Tomversation, the cartoon panel. So I'll let this short blog post be the tribute.

The Tomversation daily comic panel is published here daily: http://www.tomversation.com
