Yes, you read it right.
George W. Bush stood up for civil liberties.
The New York Times reported that advisors to George W. Bush, including Dick Cheney, recommended that Bush test the Constitution by using the military to arrest terrorism suspects.
Bush was advised to use the military to arrest the individuals who later became known as the Lackawanna Six.
Bush decided to direct the FBI to perform the arrests instead.
What was going through the minds of those who advised Bush to use the military is beyond me. Law enforcement routinely arrests very dangerous suspects. The use of the military to do so would have been a very egregious violation of law and precedent.
And it would have been pointless.
I am no fan of George W. Bush. But he did something right here, and he should be commended for it.
And those who pushed for the use of the military on US soil should be ashamed of themselves.

No wonder so many wackos are stockpiling weapons in their own homes. People, including our own government, feel we're headed for anarchy. As a historian, I have observed that oft times our beliefs can become a horrible self-fulfilling prophecy.
