Preying on Job Seekers for a Phishing Attack?

Rate: 1 Flag

Just when I thought I've seen it all, I see that some people can sink even lower that I thought possible.

A few days after posting my resume on Careerbuilder, I got this email.

Hi XXXX,

Your resume was referred to me recently. If you're currently in the job market and would be interested in hearing about our opportunities please register with us online below:

We work on searches across all of the U.S. and some in Canada. Look forward to hearing from you.

Okay, I figured.  This is what I want.  A recruiter saw something they like on my resume.  Let's see what kind of jobs they have.

I get there, and what do I see?  I see a screen like this.

This strikes me as a little strange, so I do a little research.  I do a search on McSourcer, and very quickly I get several results about how it's a scam.  Of course, since I'm already skeptical, this only serves to verify my suspicions.

One of the links is to the company's BBB report.  And what does that tell me?

They got an F.

It's really sickening what these people are doing.  They are taking advantage of a bad job market for a phishing attack.  I was skeptical and did some digging before I went any further, so I didn't get hosed.

But what about people who are so desperate for work that when someone says "I have a job for you," they just give out whatever information they're asked to give?

These people are getting hosed.  And that's kicking a person when he's down.  It's just not right.

Yeah, this is one of the reasons I keep my resume private. I'd rather find them, and research them before they can find me.
