Blind Eye

Young Mexican picker man

rises from a mattress on the floor

of a dilapidated trailer

shared with nine other mattresses.

Buys a chicken bag lunch

from the local seller of chicken bag lunches

and climbs on board the contractor bus

with contractor boss man.

Young Mexican picker man

plucks tomatoes to fill his bucket

under the blazing Florida sun

his sweat anointing our Florida earth.

Piece work at forty five cents a bucket

thirty two pounds of tomatoes

less than penny and a half a pound.

It is cheaper to rent slaves

than to own them.

Picker man wants a tiny house

circa de su familia

and so he toils for his woman and son

in plain sight yet sight unseen

by all of us for all of us

the blind eye turned.

Behind the gates of Mar-a-Lago

in the county of the picker man

amid the laughter a black tie ball.

Christ in the Eucharist

as invisible as the cost of red tomato

mixed with an ounce of vodka

a poor man’s labor and a dash of

women’s tears.

The whole is moving, the final lines perfect.
Powerful in its sadness and human isolation. R
This just moved me.. We are all one and the same no matter what we do.
HUGGGGGGGGG
""It is cheaper to rent slaves

than to own them.""

And by renting them all can be told that such employment is 'chosen by them'. Yes, chosen, just like yours and mine........

Oh Frank, how you capture the reality of life. the sadness and unfairness of it all.
I can't understand why some people espouse contempt for the hard working Mexicans. They're out there in the boiling Texas sun, doing yard work and nailing on roofs. They clean our toilets, mop the floors in our hospitals, and cook in all the restaurants, not just Mexican ones. Anthony Bourdain pays the Mexican workers in restaurants high respect. He says they're the only people who come in asking for the entry level jobs, washing dishes and clearing tables. I admire them!
[r] belatedly, but deservedly rated, my friend. reminds me of that poignant Dolly Parton song, "they were just 'deportees'" ... that is the refrain if not the title. best, libby
