Keeping Up with the Joads

Rate: 7 Flag

We ain’t got no money honey
though we got sunshine all the time.
No job this year
no house no more
no future and no hope
and it’s hot and dry this summer
living here in grandpa’s house.

Wish we had some hot dogs and
a barbecue to cook ‘em on.
Grandpa said it always rained
in the nineteen thirties
rained on and on for days on end
‘course he was on the road back then
seemed the sun would never shine
like sunshine cost the wealthy something.

Our people still ain’t hit the roads
still a step above the Joads
so heavy rains are holding off
a’waitin us to reach the end.

When the checks ‘n food stamps cease
cut backs for a budget fix
and kids at home begin to starve
the spirits of the Joads will join
a caravan to somewhere else
then the rains will come again.

When you can’t remember life before
and we’re all living in the camps
we’ll pick tomatoes for forty cents
to feed our kids and patch our tents
taking jobs from Mexicans.

And you’ll think about what went before
all your choices
what went wrong
how you never thought you’d miss
the slamming of your own screen door

Hard to imagine, but it's happening all around us.
Who would have thought such would happen again in America. You captured things so well.
[r] toritto/F -- one out of 5 American kids goes to bed hungry each night now. but both corporate parties are going to up that number because they can. what is it gonna take for people to tell Obama you have betrayed America along with Congress. you are not doing all you can, that is bullshit. Nancy Pelosi illuminating how the Dems care about that one out of 5 kids rather than the Republicans. Right out of the millionaires plus club, Congress! Obama could have given an executive order for a jobs bill. Obama could not have sold us out with health care. shamelessly talking the talk when his walk goes the other direction. $16 trillion given of taxpayer money to bail out the wealthiest in the country by both Bush and Obama administrations and Obama is gonna play up the Buffett Rule which, let's face it, wink wink, he knows Congress won't support and after he wins the election with some lip service to the starving and suffering, he will pay off his pimps all the more. All that money that is pouring into the coffers of those two corporate party candidates for advertising propaganda. It is really obscene. How it alone could have lifted the poverty level of the US. I'm not even touching on the military evil Obama has willingly been a catalyst for. I don't get it. I just don't get it. One thing to have fascism in America, another thing for the fog of citizen denial along with it. best, libby
Yeah! Those same people act like being poor is contagious. It's all about the fear.
Hard to imagine that nearly a fifth of all people under 25 will be living like this their entire lives.
