Remembering Sherry Finkbine

Rate: 4 Flag

I posted this yesterday and within a half an hour this site virtually crashed - "Lots of Errors" - so of course no one but Ken H. read it.  We all have those days.

Here it is again.  Thanks.

Sherri Finkbine Pausing on Her Way to Sweden Abortion Clinic

Sherri Finkbine in Sweden

Back in 1962...

For those of you to young to remember: The BBC Reported:

Abortion mother returns home

"An American mother-of-four is on her way home amid a storm of controversy after being given a legal abortion in Sweden.

Sherri Finkbine, a TV presenter from Phoenix in Arizona, was denied an abortion in her home state following intense negative publicity surrounding her case.

The 30-year-old mother decided to terminate her fifth pregnancy after discovering that tranquilizers she had taken in the first few weeks of her pregnancy contained the drug Thalidomide.

In recent months there has been increasing evidence suggesting Thalidomide causes severe foetal deformities including missing limbs, deafness and blindness.

Public condemnation

Mrs Finkbine, host of children's television programme "Romper Room", told her story to the local newspaper, believing it would alert other mothers in the same situation to the dangers of the drug.

But she became the focus of an intense anti-abortion campaign and worldwide public condemnation.

The negative publicity led her local hospital in Phoenix to withdraw a tentative offer of a legal abortion for fear they may be held criminally liable - the current law in Arizona states that abortion can only be carried out to save the mother's life.

Mrs Finkbine and her husband, Robert, a school teacher, took the case to the Arizona State Supreme Court but were unsuccessful.

Despite vilification from anti-abortionists across the United States and the world she flew to Sweden where the operation was carried out.  She had been trailed to Sweden by a number of "activists" and harrassed for several weeks.

After the operation it was confirmed that the foetus had no legs and only one arm .

When she returned to Phoenix Mrs Finkbine's local doctor asked her to register with another physician.

She was dismissed from her job, and her husband was suspended from his high school teaching post.

Their children were hounded, anonymous death threats poured in by post and telephone and the press swarmed around their home"

I remember Sherry and I will continue to support choice.

I can talk.  My wife and I buried two sons with severe defects, Daniel in infancy and Michael who woke up one beautiful February morning in 1985 when he was almost 10 years old and simply died in my arms.  My wife went on to have two healthy daughters - but she had a choice.  It wasn't an easy one to make considering we were two time losers in having healthy kids - but she had a choice and made the one that was right for her.  I wouldn't take that right away from any woman.

When you hear sonsofbitches calling for a complete ban on all abortions, including rape and incest, when you hear them rail against contraception, when you hear blow-hards like Paul Ryan calling for "personhood" for a zygote, which would effectively ban the "morning after" pill and the IUD remember this post.

Women!  When you feel their "mitts" in your pants remember when you vote.

Men!  If you love women or you love your daughters, remember when you vote.

If you find yourself in Sherri Finkbine's position or your wife or daughter finds herself in mine WOULD YOU AT LEAST WANT A CHOICE?

Or do you want some gummit or religious gasbags making the choice for you?

Make your own choice and answer to your own god yourself.

Any woman who votes for these people deserves to be back in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant.

You can go back to douching with lysol or massinghill like girls used to do when I was a young man cause you couldn't buy a condom in Connecticut, even if you were married.  You can play Vatican Roulette remembering of course that you had no right to say "no" to your husband.

Or you can look for the coat hangar lady who could "help you out".  They were not hard to find in every city and town in my youth.

Or if you're well off you can simply fly to Sweden or "study abroad" for a while.  That's what rich girls did.

It appears she was very brave--a lone pioneer who became the target of religious hate-fest that even followed her to Sweden to harass her there. A touching memoir, Toritto. I understand Gov. Brewer of Arizona signed a law asserting life begins two weeks beofre conception. What a concept! Now we go from rights of zygotes to rights of the unconceived... [r]
It gets so tiring. But then again, so does farming.
the thing is, why live inside the chimp cage?

what really gets up my nose is those right to lifers are not protesting against bombing pregnant women in afghanistan...
I remember Sherri Finkbine quite well. I don't think we can be sure whether the baby was deformed. The standard story is that it was missing the limbs that you mention, but we have to take Sherri's word for it. Also part of the standard story is that the obstetrician told her that the baby would have been stillborn, which would have made the whole controversy moot.

Anyway, I would like to ask you a question: Suppose a veteran of the Afghan war returns home with exactly the same combination of missing limbs as this fetus. What do you think should happen next?
