Bio
I am a simple man who has lived a simple life for sixty years. I have not dined with movie stars nor Kings and Queens. I have not walked the halls of power, nor have I been a mover and a shaker. I have, however, been a soldier, a tinker, a jack of all trades. I have raised five children....I have been loved and I have loved. I do not see grand designs nor do I chase afer them. Instead, I listen to the heartbeat of the land and I rejoice in a bird's song in the morning. Do not come here seeking answers for I have none. I do have questions which I will ask you constantly though. I do not believe in aruging so Politics will not be discussed in my blog. I do not care what your personal beliefs are for you are free to believe as you will...please allow me to do likewise. I have never been rich, but I have always been poor. Being poor however has never stopped me from feeling rich. I feel rich because I have the love of a good woman. Melinda completes me. She gives me the peace of mind and soul required to write about life without regrets and without envy of those who might have more. She is my world. Almosta Ranch is our heaven and we are happiy. This is what I want to share with you in this blog.

I Was Wrong.....Hollywood has a heart afterall.

Rate: 24 Flag

My old daddy always told me, “Boy, expect little from people and you will rarely be disappointed.” I have always taken that advise to heart and, like he said, I have rarely been disappointed or surprised. This is the story of one time that I was surprised, but certainly not disappointed.

The story begins a couple of months ago. My sister-in-law, Evelyn has terminal Cancer and is in hospice care. She is pretty much bed-ridden. One thing Evelyn said that she regretted is that she is unable to go the movies anymore. You see there was this documentary that had just come out called “Buck”, it is the story of Buck Brannaman, a horse trainer and the leading practitioner of “Natural Horsemanship”. The movie won a number of awards at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and has been touted to win an Academy Award in the category of Documentary Film.

Now I’m sure that many of you may not be aware of who Buck Brannaman is but I bet a lot of you saw the Robert Redford movie, The Horse Whisperer. Redford’s character was based on Buck Brannaman and the work he does with horses. Evelyn is every bit as much a horsewoman as Mel is, in fact she holds the distinction of being only the third woman in history to hold a license to drive in the big Harness races in Michigan. So her disappointment at not being able to see this documentary about one of her heroes is understandable.

So Mel and I were sitting at home one day when she declared: “There just has to be a way to get a copy of that movie for Evelyn to see.”

I knew that look on her face….she was a woman on a mission and I usually remain quiet and stay out of the way when she gets that look because she suddenly becomes a force of nature in her pursuit of whatever the goal might be.

This time though I Tried to talk some sense into her. “Baby,” I said calmly. “There is no way in hell you can pull that off. The dang movie is a new release and hasn’t gone to video yet. It is a small, independent production company who is struggling to get their product into movie theatres. No way are they going to have a DVD of the movie laying around, nor or they going to just send it to you out of the kindness of their hearts. We’re talking Hollywood here, honey.”

She just smiled that serene, sweet smile of hers and said. “I know, baby, but you just never know until you try.”

I rolled my eyes, gave a snort of derision and went back to watching TV while she busily started sending out e-mails.

Nothing happened for about two weeks then, one day the phone rings. I look at the caller I.D. and noted that it was a strange number I didn’t recognize.

“Mel, do you know a Cindy Meehl?” I asked. Mel came hurrying out of the kitchen and grabbed the phone from me. “Oh that’s the producer and director of “Buck.” she said nonchalantly as if she were informing me that it was raining outside.

My jaw made an audible THUD as it hit the floor and I stared unbelievingly at my sweet wife who was now in deep conversation with a Hollywood mover and shaker. I walked off shaking my head. When will I ever learn not to be surprised by this woman.

Mel stayed on the phone a good thirty minutes and when she finally hung up she walked into the living room as if nothing had happened, got on her laptop and began to surf the web and not saying a word about the call. Finally, after about ten minutes, I couldn’t stand it any longer.

“WELL?”

“Well, what?” She replied innocently. I couldn’t help but notice that she had that “Cat that ate the canary’ look on her face.

“Are you going to tell me what that call was all about?”

“Oh that was just Cindy telling me that she had mailed out a special DVD of the movie for Evelyn to see. She said it was the only one she had and a production copy. I told her after Evelyn watched it we would mail it right back to her.”

THUD.

My jaw hit the floor again.

The film arrived and Evelyn got to watch it and she loved it. We then sent it back to Cindy with our profound thanks and that how I learned that I was wrong…..Hollywood can have a heart. She didn’t have to do what she did and she did it with no fanfare and no publicity. It was a human interest story that could have generated some very positive buzz for her documentary but she nor any of her production company choose to take advantage of it. She did it just because it was the right thing to do and she was able to do it.

Now maybe you aren’t a horse person and maybe have no interest in the subject of this documentary, but it is not all about horses, it also tells the story of how Mr. Brannaman and his brother managed to overcome years of terrible childhood abuse to become functioning members of society.

I urge you, if you have a chance, go see it if for no other reason than simply because it was made by people with a heart and there’s not that many of them left in this world.

Here is a link to a site that tells you more about the movie if you are interested.

~nodding~ Hollywood does have a heart, they just don't like to show it too much, makes us go, WHA?

:D

Too sweet awesome!! RATED!!!!
this made me tear up. This is an example of something I've been thinking about lately. I believe it is possible people are much more caring than it seems. I feel a blog coming...
How kind that she would do this. Your Mel must be a true yet gentle force of nature. I love hearing of good and kindness...
Great stuff, David. Kindness and compassion exists everywhere, I believe. It gets buried much of the time, but the strength and faith of Mel helped uncover it in this case. I'm glad your sis-in-law got to watch it and I hope the movie and the circumstances in how she got it gave her some inspiration.
You never know until you try. Compassion and kindness are everywhere, especially when given the opportunity to show it.
Great story.
OMG Torman.. How great was this?
this makes me so happy.
HUGGGGGGGGGGGG
We may be old cynics, but we can always be surprised and humbled by the kindness of others, famous or not.

But then I bet Mel could charm the birds from the trees.

I loved the book of The Horse Whisperer, so will certainly be interested in checking out this film.
Great, great story, David. People will surprise you with their generosity sometimes. The amazing thing is that they didn't even do it for publicity. "Buck" has been playing in one of our local theaters and I've been meaning to catch it.
Wonderful, glad your sister in law got to see the film, glad your wife is persistent and glad Hollywood has a heart...thanks for sharing this up lifting story.
They have a heart and Mel has a very persuasive tongue!
I can't believe you ever doubted Mel.....I am so glad that you sister-in-law was able to watch that movie.

Hugs to you and Mel. Isn't about time for another Almosta Ranch story? Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!

There was a THUD in front of my computer as I read your story. Cindy Meehl's made a lie of stereotypical Hollywood. Wonderful to hear.
Mel ate the canary and you had a nice meal of crow. Isn't that how it's supposed to work? Wonderful story, Tor. Definitely gonna hafta see the movie.
Thank you for my feel good story of the day--lovely!
Makes me smile and feel good all over. Way to go Mel!
Sweet story. It fits that someone who'd choose to make a documentary about an extraordinarily kind person, would be a kind person herself.
Oh, I know that force of nature look wives can get! The lesson you have reinforced for me, Torman, is not to confuse the industry people work in with the people who work in it. People! I often don't get them; I often am amazed by them.
Tried to comment yesterday, but OS was up to its usual tricks. Anyway, I've found that you get what you expect from people. If you anticipate good, that's what you receive. It's much preferable to the alternative.
Hollywood producers are people, too, David. I'm particularly proud of this one, though. She is a class act. Thanks for sharing this touching tale.

Lezlie
Thank you so much for sharing this with us David. It does my heart good to know that there are many out there who still possess above average human traits: empathy, compassion, and grace. And I'm not just talking about Ms. Meehl, but about you and your lovely bride as well. Hugs and love to you both!
Tink...Thanks, you are right, Mel is awesome

Mimetalker.....You are right, I think there is a lot more of this sort of person than we are aware of.

Lunchlady2.....that is the perfect way to put it: a gentle force of nature. She is that for sure.

mtclimber.....Thanks Dave. Evelyn loved the movie and she was as excited as a kid at christmas when we told her it was on its way to her.

Buffyw....Thanks Sheila and you are right; given the opportunity, there are a lot out there who would do the right thing.

Linda....if it makes you happy, then it makes me smile too.

Linda Cooper....ah my sweet friend, if you liked the Horse Whisperer, then you will love watching the real man work his magic with those beautiful creatures.

Cranky....Thanks buddy and if you have the chance to see the movie, please give it a look.

SheilaTGTG....I loved sharing a good story for a change.

Scanner.....That she does, my friend.

Auntynae....I know, when will I ever learn?

Chrissie....It certainly did that, didn't it.
Matt...see the movie, you won't be disappointed. Oh and Crow is now one of my favorite dishes.

lschmoopie....You are most welcome, dear lady.

Dan....I am glad it made you feel good. Oh and to Mel's credit, she never once said: "I told you so."

greenheron....I had not thought of it that way, but you are right.

Jerry...You are right, of course, we shouldn't confuse the two very different things.

Boanerges....I understand, buddy. I had heck all day long yesterday trying to comment and rate. I am so glad you came back today though.

Lezlie....you are right, they are people, but I assumed it would be more of a business decision since movie making is, in the end, a business. I figured they simply could not afford to take any extra measures.

u_no_me....Aw, thanks hon. It restored some of my jaded feelings about humanity in general too.
What a great story!
I'm so glad your sister got to see this film, I'm glad to hear she loved it...
I too am a firm believer that you never know, you just have to be willing to ask and see what happens.
Go Mel!
I hope you know never to doubt that woman again. This made me cry, Torman. Can't wait to see the film. -R-
How absolutely fantastic! That's truly wonderful. (And you'd better never doubt Mel again!)
What a terrific story. Hollywood does indeed have a heart. But the volume of your heart and Mel's heart is limitless. The world needs more like you two--and Cindy's too.
Reading this MY jaw dropped! I went to Buck Brannaman clinics for years with my horses. He helped me so much with horses that were extremely difficult. Of course I knew he was great, but now a movie! I can't wait to see it. I loved his methods because they have heart, and it must carry through. After the first day of his clinic, I wished that I had taken them when my kids were still young because he showed how much difference correctly timed positive reinforcement makes in getting behavior you want from your animal. Wow. I can't wait to see the movie. Thanks for posting, and how wonderful you and your wife are to bring this to your friend.
You gave us a glimpse into the good heart of the producer as well as the good heart of Melinda. I can see why she is your world, and a good one too. And what your story here says of the people behind the movie is so in keeping with the story shared in the documentary, so in keeping with what Buck himself conveys: Quiet, respectful, accepting, intelligent sensitivity to others. Incredible empathy, all absent of any drama. And harnessing these qualities to bring out the best in his horses and in others. I think Buck is a humble master of walking well through life, each step a demonstration of the art of being.
