Bio
I am a simple man who has lived a simple life for sixty years. I have not dined with movie stars nor Kings and Queens. I have not walked the halls of power, nor have I been a mover and a shaker. I have, however, been a soldier, a tinker, a jack of all trades. I have raised five children....I have been loved and I have loved. I do not see grand designs nor do I chase afer them. Instead, I listen to the heartbeat of the land and I rejoice in a bird's song in the morning. Do not come here seeking answers for I have none. I do have questions which I will ask you constantly though. I do not believe in aruging so Politics will not be discussed in my blog. I do not care what your personal beliefs are for you are free to believe as you will...please allow me to do likewise. I have never been rich, but I have always been poor. Being poor however has never stopped me from feeling rich. I feel rich because I have the love of a good woman. Melinda completes me. She gives me the peace of mind and soul required to write about life without regrets and without envy of those who might have more. She is my world. Almosta Ranch is our heaven and we are happiy. This is what I want to share with you in this blog.

Don't come here for answers my friend

Rate: 36 Flag

One thing I have noticed in my seven-plus years of doing blogs is that blog sites all over the Web are filled with people who have the answers to all our woes. Whether it be politics, religion, or social morays, these folks are sure and certain that their way is the only way and anyone who disagrees with them are merely simple-minded fools who know no better.

I am not one of those experts and I hope no one ever comes to this blog expecting to find the answers to anything because the one thing I am certain of after sixty-two years of life is that I know little and have no answers for anything. The older I get, the more questions I have.

You see, my friends, I deal with problems and find solutions, when I can, for things that impact my life directly….small things, really, in the greater scheme. Now that is not to say I have no opinions on things such as politics or religion or social morays. Like everyone else I have my own beliefs but they are mine and I would never assume to put them forward as the only way…just my way. Each person must find their own trail to walk. Walking my trial will probably not get you to the place you yearn to reach after all.

If I were to be pushed to give any answers at all it would be to tell you that no matter how things are right now, they will change. The one sure thing that I have learned is that the heat of Summer is always replaced by the cool of Fall and just when we get comfortable with Fall, Winter comes along with its bone chilling cold but do not despair because Spring will follow and with it the life-giving warmth. Life is like the cycle of seasons and that is about the only answer I find myself sure enough about to share with anyone.

Yesterday the first signs of that cycle of seasons manifested itself to me in the form of seventy-degree weather at noon which was enough to encourage a late afternoon walk…..

A stroll down to the pond to watch the frogs frolic under the willows...

Joined on my walk by a few of my "babies".....

Stopping along the way to give a needed hug to one of my young ones......

Or just to watch the "young ladies" enjoy an afternoon meal at their round bale of hay....

So it is that I enjoy one of the few answers I know for sure....Summer's heat has been replaced by Fall's respite.

Your horses are gorgeous. Hoping for the fall respite here soon!
send them over to me. maybe I'll start up a dear abby blog. Common (horse) sense is my middle name.

and speaking of horse sense, those ARE gorgeous horses. Now that I know a little about how to ride, I'm definitely jealousing over here in my little corner of the world. :)
Tor, everyone knows I have all the answers over at my blog, hah! You are so right, as usual, that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
You old goat!...You have more answers than you let on. You just don't call attention to it like some fools do. Your answers are to the deeper questions in life, like "How can I be happy with the simple things life gives me?" You've answered that one pretty dang well.

BTW, you're quite the ladies man!
I've been thinking about Buddha lately. He said life is suffering and change is constant. If it was true 2500 years ago, I suppose it's true still. Lovely pics.
I love questions more than answers. Answers are only current understandings, subject to change with more questions and more information. But having a place to walk with a sense of certainty that some things in the universe are as you think they are...that's a little bit of heaven you have there.
I believe everything you say in this post, except
"Walking my trial will probably not get you to the place you yearn to reach after all...''

Seems to be a place of peace and harmony with self and nature.
Torman...I come here to hear you...not for answers, but I often find them. xoxo J
I've noticed the older I get, the less I seem to know. And you may claim to be a simple man, but from the pictures you have posted you are very happy, have purpose in your life and you are never lonely.
Beautifully said Torman. Where there are people, there are know-it-alls!!!
Two huge wisdoms in your post: "The older I get, the more questions I have." and "No matter how things are right now, they will change." We sometimes forget that we are on a very old planet where billions and billions of people have lived long before us and most likely will after us. It's easy to get seduced into the negativity but your good post shows a wiser and calmer path. Thank you.
the older i get and the more i understand about how many different sides/ slices/ views (credible ones, not loony ones) there can be on a serious subject, the less tolerant i am of people who claim to know *the* answer and are ready and willing to tell the rest of us what to do and how to do it. pffffffft.

i'd rather go for a walk. and if the closest i get is thru the lovely pics of you and the horses on a *cool* missouri afternoon (when it's a freaking sauna here), that's good enough, david. xoxo
Yep, and Torman, Fall's respite is just teasing you because we both know that there's plenty of heat and humidity left in southern Missouri before the season changes. That's one of the delightful hints that Mother Nature tricks us with every year.
Seems we had similar thoughts yesterday.
Wise words from one of the best in the blogging world.

Life is all about change and accepting it. It's also about caring for others and all creatures great and small.

You do all these things so well.
Torman - Excellent post and to the point. I love the pics as well.
Rated with a Jali Smile. :-)
I make up my own answers as I go along. Thank you for sharing these images with us. Now, I'm jealous, and this is from a city slicker. Btw, just one question, can you send some of them cool temps down to Miami, FLA? I'll pay the shipping charges. R
Lovely Photos!!! Thank you for the wise thoughts.
Yes, Torman, this is excellent. But I would LOVE to be an advice columnist and I bet lots of others here would as well. You know like Garrison Keillor was or the unique Cary Tennis. I would not be didactic; I would not have exact answers but hey, I just realized that would be major fun. Sorry for being the contrarian here. R
Wise words, Torman.
fine. come to my blog for answers instead :p
No answers over at my place either, Tor.

Though there is one thing I do know .... I learn something new practically every day and for that I am deeply grateful. Perhaps with the learning I am becoming just a little wiser with age.
Those are the finest horses' asses I have seen on OS! (No shortage either!) They look very well cared for! Haven't seen a frog that wasn't on a plate in 4 years!
I rated this successfully last night, and then the storm hit, knocking out our satellite server just as my comment was trying to squeeze thru. But now I see all the good comments are taken, and most of them are better than the one I tried to post, which had words like "wisdom" and "beautiful" but didn't include Kate's observation about the west ends of horses going east, with which I agree.
You've summed up my sentiments very well, Torman. The more I know the less I understand...yes, we've been fortunate here as well with a break from the extreme heat wave and the downside is the odor and smoke from wildfires throughout Texas continue to reak havoc on our landscapes.
Boanerges.....One of my favorites songs too.

keri h.......Thank you, I am very proud of my girls.

Monkey......I will send them your way, my friend.

Scanner......Dude, I go there every day for my answers.

Dan....I have answers that work for me but might not mean a lot to others. Oh and I've been telling you for years that I'm quite the ladies man, now you believe.

Rei Momo.....Yes, I suppose it is. Thanks for stopping by.

Mimetalker....I have described it as a little piece of heaven many times myself.

James Emmerling.....and it's only taken me sixty-two years to find it, go figure.

Brazen Princess....I'm just so glad you come by to read.

Chrissie Pissie.....I am happy, and lord know's I'm never lonely with all my fur babies surrounding me.

Susie Lindau....thank you and you're right.

marykelly...you are right. I sometimes think of all the generations that have come and gone on this planet and it makes all my struggles seem small.

Candance...Well I have a rocker on my front porch with your name on it.

Walt...at least here in Missouri we HAVE Fall. Back in Texas where I'm from, it just goes from blazing hot to hot.

Major Mojo....it seems we did, doesn't it.

Linda Cooper....Aw, thanks my dear friend, you're no slouch yourself.

JALI....Thank you and thanks for stopping by.

Trudge....Send cool weather to Miami? Heck, those folks would panic if they felt cool air. I've been there and its one of the few places hotter than my part of Texas was.

zanelle....You are very welcome.

wendyo....There is a difference between advice columnists and bloggers. People ASK for advice from the advice columnist but with most bloggers they get it without asking.

trilogy.....thank you, my friend.

uzn...I'll do that the next time I need answers.

divorcedpauline...thank you.

Little Kate....that's one thing fun about living a long time, all the things you get to learn.

kate O'hehir.....Oh, I love a good plate of frog legs too.

Matt...I hope the storm didn't cause you too much problems, my friend.

Belinda...I have been following the news from my home state with a lot of interest. I still have a lot of family living there in harm's way.
I'm asking everybody I know to make a charitable donation to the American Red Cross, Tor. We can't wait on our state or feds for help; we must come together locally and help our families with whatever they need to start over.
You certainly know a thing or two about how to be humble--a lesson many people could learn from. Beautiful horses!
Karin said it, humility, I read it all over this post!! I know that part of the state and you had me walking with you. I also have to condone the angle of the horses, quite appropriate for some. I was an Op/Ed columnist, emphasis on the Op = Opinion. I had many who nodded their heads in agreement, there were a few who told me how my "answers" were dead wrong. That's just it, it is and editorial on my opinion of the situation. My daddy use to say that opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has one and all of them can stink! The other thing he said was that everyone is entitled to them.

Thanks for what I learn from you all the time. Thank for the walk as well!
Ah, but this is an answer: keeping life in perspective.
The older I get, the more obvious it is to me that the solution to many of our problems is to accept there is no perfect solution to many of our problems.

The photos are gorgeous. Thanks for posting this.
The cycles of life. Just explain one thing--why do we keep getting April showers in August and September???

(Well, another: how big is a cubit?)
Funny you think that. There is plenty of good advice in your posts, offered by the example you set.
Ch Ch Ch changes......David Bowie
I pretty much distrust answers . . . so I guess I'm in the right place after all. Gorgeous horses, Torman.
I do love spring and fall. It is so beautiful.
I do love spring and fall. It is so beautiful.
You just might be one of the richest men I know - surrounded by everything you love. Mel, nature, animals... that's a lot of beauty for one fella, but no one deserves it more than you!!
I visit your blog to benefit from your wisdom and to read your stories of life at Almosta Ranch, my friend. Your writing is like a breath of fresh air, your heart stays in the right place everytime something unexpected happens, and you've never said anything to break mine.
♥R
I have been on the lookout for some thoughts coming from you,David.
The words coming from you are so heartwarming that tears come to my eyes. You are a truly wise man.
I am busy harvesting grapes. To me,this ancient trade is like a holy act.It is so very different from anything else today except perhaps taking good care of animals like the shepherds on the fields.
Thank you ,David,it feels good knowing you are there someplace.
