Family trip to Chase County Kansas 053109 (rated g)

Rate: 43 Flag

This weekend  our closest immediate  family spent some quality time

together in an unbelievable place 120 miles or so from here; a place that

I was aware of but hadn't once been to in my life. Located 20 miles west of

Emporia, Ks. lies Chase County, the heart of the Flint Hills of Kansas. The

picture below is on the old bridge over the Cottonwood River in

Cottonwood Falls  (but the trees in the background are NOT

cottonwoods... I think).  From left to right is JLynne, Asometimeyankee

(Mom), yours truly TP, Nanatehay, TrigX, Pablo Escobar Jr., and

Tony Montana Jr. (Shhhh, Jlynne doesn't tell everyone about this but her

oldest is half Colombian and the youngest half Cubano: don't let the

reddish blond hair and fair skin fool you). White and black dog is Leon

Trotsky. Black Dog with white paws is Heinrich Himmler. And that's

Triglet, my head security officer in my right hand ( I've been told you

have to be VERY secure in your own manhood to own a dog the size of

a toaster).

Here (below) Friday evening, setting up camp. TrigX in the foreground and Pablo just behind. This is at Chase County Lake, a rather smallish but picturesque lago, only about 3 miles down the road from Cottonwood Falls.

The atmosphere law enforcement wise was totally relaxed at this place. One rule only which was take out your own trash/clean up after yourself. Parking on the grass for a little while....no problem. Staying up late and playing guitars and singing and joking around by the lake while fishing late into the night......no sweat!

In fact we never once saw a sherriff or a park ranger or any "authority" type person at all. The people that used this park were/are left to police themselves... like adults. There were no problems at all with camp neighbors. No need for hassles or arrests. Having a good time was NOT PROHIBITED as it is in similar places nearer Kansas City.

Cell phone signals were however a small problem. In the below picture I had climbed to the top of one of the surrounding hills trying to get a text through. The message wouldn't send, even from up there, but the view was great and I snapped this picture.DSC01627 by you.

As the sun started to set last night Nanatehay snapped this picture below (I apologize for stealing your pic dude... you have plenty more). A storm was blowing in. The moon was a perfect half of a pie. There turned out to be lightning and thunder, but all while the moon stayed out. All seven of us humans and all three dogs were gathered around sky watching and enjoying each others company. It was a night I will not soon forget. Never actually...

Once again near the Cottonwood River in Cottonwood Falls. These ARE cottonwood trees. Amongst the largest I've ever seen no less.

This was just before we headed back this afternoon... In the background is an old mill that was converted to a hotel. Just below is the Cottonwood River and the old mill dam. Directly after this pic was taken by Jlynne we vamanosed for KC. DSC01630 by you.

One more pic down by the lake where we camped. Does anyone recognize this plant in the foreground?

OK! At LAST I have can see your posts! For some reason, I keep "favoriting" you, but then I never see your blog around in my list... so problem solved so far!
What a lovely place. Pictures 3 and 4 are perfect; the perfect mild green nature for family camping, fantastic! Now, are there falls? did you visit them?
Kisses and rated.
Thums for dream peace. Paradise indeed -
peece,
dj
The Flint Hills are a little known gem. They should have been named the Emerald Hills. That shot of the billowing storm cloud is one for publication.
I can´t recognize the plant...
About 10 years ago, my daughter and I drove to Marysville, Kansas (far NE Kansas) from Dallas to do some genealogical research. We came home on a blue highway that went through the Flint Hills. It was beautiful. We saw tracks left by the conestoga wagons 150 years before. It is a gem, indeed.
Family vacations are so great!
Looks like a great weekend so far. Curious about what happened with the storm. And the plant . . . it's not poison sumac, is it?
Holy cow, that is some pretty scenery, Trig!

And double-holy-cow- all y'all are related? I had no clue whatsoever! Did I miss a memo? The family that blogs together....okay, I suck at rhyming, so I'll just say....

Rrrrrrrrated!
Nothing quite as satisfying as a good family camping adventure- thanks for sharing!
Sounds like a perfect weekend. Your pics show a lot of beauty and happiness. :)
Once again I was left off of the list of people to invite to a a camp out. Am I really that much of an embarrassment?
Seriously, looks like all of you had a grand time. Great pics, especially the one of the T-storms. Don't think I've ever seen anything quite like that before. I wish my lawn looked as good as your campsite.
Beautiful! You have proven that Kansas is not flat!!! At least the eastern half or so.
hey walkaway... who drew the avatar? quite nice....thanks !

Hi Marcela and may I say kisses back at you ?: )
You are very sweet as always and yes, there were falls, and some of my family who also blogs has pics I'm sure but I didn't get any. A guy at the falls had two twenty pound flathead catfish he caught this morning too.

DJ peece to you too...thanks my friend

Procopius ... I guarantee you Nanatehay has ABUNCH more killer pics and you're right... publication, hell yes.

Marcela that plant is a....can't tell...........yet
Julie so cool that you saw this... many are unaware of the geography and history here. You undoubtedly came across the California and Oregon trails or the Santa Fe trail.... all of which ran right thru here.

Duane thanks we had a great time...truly

Owlie the storm fizzled... We had maybe 13 or 14 drops of rain. it was like sky theater just for us with none of the inconveniences.

Bees Tone so glad you came by! and yes we;ve been out of the closet for a while and yes you missed all that and...... I even took a pic that reminded of you while in Cottonwood Falls of a potter business. Let me know if you want I'll e mail it to you or include in a future post.

Mamoore thanks and oh so true:)

ok JK it's time to come clean . the plant is clitomaxicus tickularis en francicus.... originally known as the "french tickler"
Cool pics!! I'm still upset you didn't take me. I could be a security guard too!!! I got most of my shots!! ;)

"I've been told you have to be VERY secure in your own manhood to own a dog the size of a toaster"

Yes, yes you do!! That and wearing a pink shirt to work!!! :)
Oooh! Find a reason to post the pic! Everyone should see the fabulousness that is the potter biz!

So, where can I read about y'all coming outta the relation closet? Is there something posted? Sheesh, I go away for a li'l while and lookee what I miss.....
Brie thank you it was quiiiiiiiiiite happy

Michael you're ALWAYS invited.. goes without sayin'

Brenda Gail if anyone knows then you should know that Kansas is NOT FLAT. If anyone wants to see flat go to Louisiana. Best bicycle riding state in the country I wager

DC glad you enjoyed!

Tinks of course I know that you would be a great security poodle! In your pink shirt and all.......~winks~

yes JK it is the way of our people

and Bees I can easily parlay this weekends experiences into another post and since you asked so nice I'll do it just for you tomorrow.
awesome!

I'm still smiling and shaking my head over you two. heeeee....
Great pics! You've really made me miss Kansas. Maybe if I click my heels together ...
Yup, there we are...immersed in the true Kansas. This suburb we live in isn't the true Kansas. Great family vaca!!!
Yeah, and why'd'ya have to let that out about my kids? Man!
Damn. Now I want to go camping.
Kansas and Oklahoma have such a reputation of being flat... actually there is a lot of beautiful landscape in both states. I love the flint hills!!! So beautiful this time of year.
That plant you are holding looks like bottle brush to me. I have lots of it in my back yard in Northern California and it is a very sturdy, drout resistant plant, that will grow like a bush or even tallish leggy trees.

This is a wonderful post of family and exploring within your world. No fuss or muss. Just getting outside your comfort zone and checking out a place not so far away but so different from the status quo. Your photos and Nanatehay's are simply gorgeous! I loved this and how great it is to know more about you and your special family. Nothing like time with family, doing just about anything.
BTW, you still have Pablo's pillow in yer truck.
And lucky me, just noticed awhile ago that I had a message in the dust on my car. I suspect it could have been X, but I suppose it could have been a secret admirer at the ball park. It said "Sweet car Love U Rock Man". OR perhaps it was that nice fella from breakfast this morning. Oh wait, my car wasn't there....Kisses to X.
Pic 4 is magic.

denese
Yes, you can say kisses back, no problem!
What a beautiful place. You Palins are a great bunch.
I really enjoy the Flint Hills in Kansas every time I drive through them. I find them peaceful and beautiful. I enjoyed your pictures.
You've got some spectacular pictures! Keep up the good work in showing the beauty of Kansas.
so great. no way in hell you could go anywhere accessible worth camping in cali without having to negotiate permits and ranger machismo. sometimes it really is better to be in the middle of nowhere.

here's to unprohibited fun...
A trip through your words and pictures is worth stopping by for a visit.
Inspiring- reminds me how nice the simple pleasures in life can be, when we take the time to appreciate them. Love the pics.
Trig, these pics make me want to see Kansas. I love camping.
And I have never knew cottonwoods got that big.
Post more of this.
The Palin family does a get job here. I love reading all of your writing.
I want to say something about the great family, great pics, great place.....but I'm just so damn jealous.....
Looks like a great time was had by all, except Escobar, Jr. Why does he keep looking around like someone is after him. Oh, well.I went through Kansas one time, and I swear, I didn't see one tree. And the wind blew all the time. I must have been in the farming section, where all the land is clear. But it looked like a beautiful place to camp. Now, go back to work (one day without a cig)
This was lovely, Trig and it sounds like you had a "normal family get together". Considering all of the kooks you are dealing with here on OS (including me), take this as a big compliment! Great photos, too. But I have to say that Nan's is the best (running to the Park Ranger for protection).
sounds like a good time was had by all!
Sounds like fun Trig. Rated.
no clue, butif its poisonous im sure ill get itchy just looking at it

and it looks like you all had a great time.. i think im gonna take the girls camping in a couple weeks.. just gotta time it around martys baby excivating. LOL
Nice photos, great scenery.

I love your comment about your dog.
Love the pic of the sky! Beautiful!
Glad you were able to get away and have fun. What amazing pics - particularly the storm clouds. Hard for me to believe that cell phones take such great pictures now.
Ahhh, a break from the serious postings this morning. Thank you for this reminder that all things happening are not evil plots.

Great photos, glad you had such a wonderful day.
Wow Trig....LJ and I may have passed you on the turnpike!
We were driving down to Wichita....we hope to stop in Cotton Wood falls on the way back.
thanks for the pictures and text! Delightful!
About time you found Chase County!!! Be sure to go at Christmas time so you can see the Chase County courthouse all strung with lights. If I remember correctly, about 20 years ago when the county was just about bankrupt, the citizens all pitched in to get lights for the courthouse. If you tire of roughing it at the lake, stay at the hotel you posed near - the rooms are phenomenal, and the price is cheap!
Amazing photos, particularly from the hilltop and, of course, the stormsky. Gosh, maybe I Should move back home.

Glad you had such a wonderful time. I love me some cottonwoods. Out by Lake Perry, where my folks live, Was the oldest cottonwood, but it finally up and died. It was Huge, and there were nesting bald eagles that used it as a hunting station (they nested farther down the east side of the lake). And did you know or do you remember - we had a big ol' cottonwood outside the statehouse in Topeka. But somebody Poisoned it. When I still lived there and worked for the State, I'd go by and touch it. They tried for years to save it, to no avail. (I guess there have always been killers in Kansas.)

Sorry for the downward spiral - moodwise, not too good today. Thanks for the awesome pics.
I just made Kansasstormsky my desktop background.

Makes me feel good.
Once again I fell behind...drat.

I'm doing another post later with more pics and descriptions of the weekend and the area down there. I'm enchanted now to say the least.
the stolen pic is amazing and everyone knows real men have small dogs! yours does look like toto though, which is kinda weird, considering you were in kansas.
Made me very sentimental about camping as child. And the pictures were beautiful. I think that plant may be part of why having fun was NOT PROHIBITED. Maybe?
Those are gorgeous pictures! I am glad you all had a good time.
I believe your plant may be a variety of lespedeza, some of which are considered "pests" because livestock won't eat them. You can do a Google image search to check.
This looks like a wonderful lazy kind of trip...Perfect. Does this means that summer is here? Sure cold..rainey cold tomorrow. I want some of your weather.
It is good to go to a place with no cell phone signals. Seem to change the whole dynamic in the best of ways. Great pics!
What a great weekend! I love your family. I can just imagine what it must be like to be up late, singing around the campfire with the likes of you and your bro. (and your mom and your sis for that matter). I can't imagine anything more fun. And that photo of the cloud!! Incredible.
Great post, stupendous photos. You wore the same clothes the whole weekend, didn't you? Just, you know, sayin... nature's so cool.
Beautiful country. Beautiful family. Wow, and beautiful photos!

I've never been to Kansas. It doesn't look anything like it did on the Wizard of Oz. I might have to get to Kansas one of these summers.
