Breakfast with my new OS friend from San Francisco

Rate: 32 Flag

A couple of nights ago I received a private mail from my good friend Sirenita Lake. It was late; almost 3AM central time.

Seems that I had fallen asleep on the couch, which I hate doing by the way. Needless to say, I just couldn't get up and go straight to bed. Yes, I had to stop by the 'puter station and check my OS.

The PM was titled "Mark in Kansas, maybe", and read thusly...

"My husband, Mark Pritchard, is carrying out a hare-brained scheme to drive in a blizzard in the name of art. Jeff mentioned there was a snow storm in Kansas a few days ago, so Mark is heading there. If you see him, don't worry, he's a harmless lunatic. In fact, I gave him y'all's phone numbers so he can say hi if he gets within hailing distance.

It seems wrong, WRONG, that Mark should get to meet you guys first, but that might just be the case. When you do see me, it will *not* be so's I can drive in a snow storm.

It's so cool to have friends in snowy places.

Love,
Sirenita"

My first thought was hmmm, "hare-brained?" I, for some reason, would have said hair-brained. But that's just me. The hare animal works much better of course.

As it came to pass, Mark Pritchard did in fact ring me up last night.

He was settled in at a motel in Olathe (O-lay-thuh) Kansas. Of course he pronounced it O-lay-theeee. No-one can pronounce that name. I mean who else would know? Most out of towners call it O- layth. Must be an Indian name.

Long story short, Mark picked me up at nine this morning.  We went across the state line to Kansas City, Missouri to "First Watch" on Westport Road, where we became acquainted over a sumptuous morning meal of eggs fritatta, skillet fried potatoes, english muffins, and coffee... and Mark even picked up the tab!

Our waitress Inga agreed to snap this picture (above). Inga was a tiny brunette with a Swedish accent. I asked where she was from, and well, I should have known...

Lithuania!

Mark and I discussed his mission... his purpose, his nuttiness (in my view). Leaving a perfectly nice and warm "city by the bay," on his vacation, to drive through midwest snow storms.

It made sense after he explained. He's writing a novel in which one of the characters is, yes, driving through the midwest... in blizzards. Mark wanted to experience that first hand for the sake of being able to write the part.

As a gift, I received two of Mr. Pritchards previous novels which I will be reading very soon. I have a money gig to take care of first... but soon as I get back!

After giving Mark the short tour of Kansas City (the good side), he dropped me off at home. By now he should be getting somewhere near the Colorado border as he makes his way back to Sirenita and San Francisco.

Nice to meet ya Mark!

Below.... bonus pic of my cat Dr. Black last Sunday. I'm thinking he might be happier in San Fran.

I heard that real authors will do anything for their art. Guess this proves it. I mean ... not only driving through a blizzard, but having breakfast with you.

Wonder if you'll appear as a character in the book?
Why wasn't I told about this? And why did that Lithuanian waitress have a Swedish accent?
And why did you spell "Fransisco" with two esses?
Cool story. I like this guy. Anyone who would drive in a snowstorm to get the experience of writing about it is my type of person.
B1... I'm waaaaaaaaay scarier than a blizzard, eh!

That Swedish waitress must have been yanking my chain Nanner. Fixed the esses... OOPS!

Yeah Spudman, I too found that admirable.
How cool was that?!?!
(Sorry Sirenita--maybe next time).

As a side note, is your cat laying in a fucking snow bank? Like, just hanging out? Or is he stuck?
Rated for lovely O.S. connections.
Hey! A little birdie told me you might be getting a visitor. Glad you had a good time and books to boot. All right!
Now I'll be interested to read Mark's next book to see how his research worked. I love a good road trip but I gotta draw the line at a snow storm. Brave man! Ha! Of course, he's brave. He's married to Sirenita! Love her.
S, that is a great pic of your cat. You're very good at photography.
Wonder why some still wonder if this is a community? Looks like you communed just fine over some artery paste and a Swedish Lithuanian. Good thing he didn't come to the house though, looks like Dr. Black may have hitched a ride out on the engine block.
First Watch has excellent Eggs Benedict. Good choice.
He looks like a good guy. My luck, some guy looking like Michael in Halloween would buy me breakfast. My last one!
Spotted, that cat was frozen in a snow bank. Last I checked he was still there. I just take him a few morsels now and then.

DYoung... indeed

SKay) Yep, good times. Never can tell what a day will bring! And yes, I AM a fine photographer.

Gabby, Artery paste? Love it! Dr, Black would never leave me. He lubs it here.

Dorinda.. they gots first watch down there? Who knew? I thought it was KC phenomenon. Their breakfasts are simply mahvelous.

And not everyday that you meet a Lithuanian with a Swedish accent, named Inga no less. Jeez!
What a happy post ! And just proves my theory that "Missouri LOVES company." :o) To many other happy unions. P.S I adore Dr Black.

And to think, most of us locals just try and stay off the roads in a blizzard!
OF COURSE Dr. Black wouldn't go anywhere...as you said, HE'S FROZEN IN THE SNOW BANK -- duh!
Performance art, and you get to play a part. How cool!
scanner... I'm fixin' to meet a guy this week name of FROOT LOOP. "Muthafucka only has 'bout four teeth in his whole head. Get's a pint of Evan Williams ever' night at five, $6.75, jus' affer work". I ain't eatin' breakfast wit' him tho.

Walk Away... the cat, well, it was snowing and all. But thanks.

FusunA T'ank ya.. Nice classic MISSOURI quote :))

bluesurly I KNOW!!!

Yeah Gabby, Being frozen in keeps from a runnin' off.

I'm practicin' my southrun speech patterns
whoa, jeff is waaay jealousing here. and no wonder, you lucky duck. i bet mark thought, pffffffft, what's a little snow?

pretty black kitty.
That's one thing NOT on my bucket list. Driven way too many snowy miles in my day.
"I'm waaaaaaaaay scarier than a blizzard, eh!"

Not exactly what I meant, but hey....
I love OS meetups - we are citizens of a small city that's stretched out over the globe. And it lets you know that someone wants to know something about Kansas! Who woulda thunk it?

(Hey Trig, I didn't know you were in KC - my birthplace! We lived in Prairie Village and went ice skating on a rink on the state line, about a block from my old house. )
Must have been worth it just to have breakfast with you in KC.

That is so cool. Meeting people you know online in person. R
Driving in mega snow is completely normal driving. Once you have mastered the art of not using brakes. How'd he do anyway?
Very cool, but like spotted_mind I have to wonder about the snowy pussy. brrrr
readwillet. welcome. performance art=life in motion

femmy... Mark has been snow starved. He was born in Illinois, moved to Texas, then San Fran. You like Dr. Black? He's a strange one.

Cap'n, you and me too :^)

B1.. you're saying that I'm cool enough to be incorporated into art?

Ardee, every once in a while Ks. gets a little love. Prairie Village? No Kidding... that's just up the road a mile or two!

ONL yeah I'm sure it was quite an experience for Mark. HA

Leslie :o absolutely!

Trudger.. Thing is I was barely familiar with Mark. More w/Sirenita. Mark spends more time writing books than on OS it seems.
Can't wait to read his stuff...
Bill's dubious: Mark asked me in parting for driving on snow/ice advice. I told him just what you said. FORGET the brakes, and steer the direction you're sliding... that is if you're so unfortunate that you break free.

Ablonde, that cat looks like that year 'round. PDS. Pussy dandruff syndrome.
We all need to get away from our own cities every now and then. Personally I drive to Hartford and scratch all the Lieberman bumperstickers off the cars there. r.
manhattan. good work on the stickers. deputy dog gots.to.go

Kyle... hard to imagine. I know :o
Cool! If your cat Dr. Black decides to visit San Francisco, make sure he comes by for breakfast with us.
ForeverMom says her Daddy came from Kansas, somewhere called Hiawatha, and the family genealogist was based in Olathe, thanks for telling us how to say it. (Not as hard as saying Tuolumne and Guerneville.)
your friends,
~fatRocco and feralRusty
Olathe reminds me of Sequim, Washington. You can always tell the out-of-towners because they pronounce the long "e". But the "e" is silent, so it's pround Squim.
rescuers.. I'll send Dr. Black your way. Hiawatha is out there a ways. I live about a mile from Missouri in the far east of OZ. O lay THUH:)

Travis Squim eh.. Is that named after......... never mind :-)
Sounds like great fun, but if Mark wanted to research winter, he could have just called me. I spent my first 25 years fruitlessly battling snow and ice in Michigan, and I could also tell him about getting caught on I-75 in the Great Blizzard of '04 -- not, not 1904, smartass, and that is why I won't be driving to Michigan in the winter again -- EVER!
Hi! So after breakfast I drove through Kansas all day. Trig said "You'll see plenty of Kansas," and was he ever right. It took all day.

Now I'm in Colorado Springs. Where it is... snowing! Yay!

Thanks for making time for me, Trig, and for the brief tour of Kansas City. Sirenita would have loved the 1920s buildings!
Trig treat the dandruff and toss that pussy in the tub! I hear they just love the water.
I am so jealousing and holding my breath until I can get out to see the boys in Kansas. Trig, thanks for looking out for my man. Did he tell you which of the books was a straight novel and which was erotic? I guess you'll just have to read them.
