The Y's have the house so far. Mr. Cordle, I SHUT DOWN my google adsense account when I saw that it had gone from 11 cents to one cent within a week. I was afeared that I would get into the negatives and owe them money. Plus couldn't stand the whorish look of my page. I suggest all others who feel that they have been befoozled by OS and Google do the same.
The more I 'know' Thomas, the more I miss Kerry/Zerry/Larry who used to make appearances from time to time and showed a hint of personality. Being completely ignored makes one feel rather belittled. I would be happy if Thomas told me and others to shut the fuck up and this is just how it is, etc. Then I might shut it down. The SILENCE is deafening and I won't be able to rest on this subject until I hear something.... anything
OH NO I CAN'T!! (make movies). Trig, this is the most entertaining, clever, creative bit of business on OS right now. FIVE STARS! Emma Peelo!!! hahahahahaha, hiccup.
Every person should get back to real writing, not all this ontological pathos. Write compelling stories! Convey compelling news breakings! Read Ms Saturne Smith and Mr Gregory Corell. Enough with the navel lint! Who wants a blanket made from that stuff?
Janie K Brady.. one needs only to follow your comments as Pirrhanahands to see it's you... Also the namaste at Cindy Ross's under Dorian Gray. Also the pfft in your tags at moocow's. Maybe you should get a life and stay out of mine? Just sayin'. I know you well. Remember? And I'm assuming that's a W from pirrahnahands?
Trig, Paramahansa aint' Janie; this much I know. Regarding the feeds, since I come down squarely on both sides of the issue, I'll give a resounding "Y" and "W" as well as a resonant "@@."
Cap'n, I'm rating your comment as [-r] for insensitivity to the topic at hand. there's nothing here to imply folks are not concerned, nay crazy inflamed, about the Gulf oil spewing...this isn't about that. One can pick and choose one skirmish at a time. You are out of order. ::gavel::
Cap'n, you are aware of my love for you. Sometimes I have fantasies of twirling the braids in your beard. I do believe you know me well enough to know that I am completely aware, and grieving to my core for the Gulf of Mexico. If you didn't know that, you do now. OS is but an outlet for steam. It's a place where I CAN (maybe) make an actual difference... even if the difference is in a seemingly small thing that means not a damn thing in the big picture. I so wish there was a single thing I could do to help with, or change what happened in the gulf. Believe me when I say that I would gladly shoot any sonofabitch who was responsible if any one could be singled out. My fantasy in that regard would be that Dick Cheney was found to be guilty of fucking up the Gulf. But I wouldn't shoot him. I'd fuck him up slowly... very slowly
Amanda the thought of you walking the plank... and then begging to be spared, no matter what it took, has made me stiff as the plank itself.
Janie. I'm sorry. I'm starting to feel like a lot of OSers always said they felt about alternate personalities. It's freaky not not knowing if the person you are 'talking' to is someone you know, or used to know. Mooooooooo
I'm not liking the Y and W in the same damn comment thing jus' so ya know people! In OZ we call that "nuts on the fence"... and our fences are either barb wire, electric, or both.
Ah, miss lorriann, you illustrate my point very well. You are a magical writer, the words flinging from your fingertips like sparks or terrestrial stars, primal and earthy. Someone should translate you into Sanskrit and hordes would faint. Poetry becomes you, you wear it like a second skin.
wish I could do something about the Gulf spill by writing on OS, but the 4 hour feed could keep us more aware of the currency on that issue too. I've been here since October last year and I swear Pitbulls in Spamalot hasn't moved and I've yet to look at it either.
Anything that stays still that long is dead, or it's an institution.
Y Y Y is pit bulls still there. Good point about the flow thing Kim. that's what I'm talking about. Keeping it current. Every time someone google searches 'pit bull' it pulls up that stupid fucking post by James Poyner who did nothing but copy the image from the net. Of course James could delete the tired ass blog, but...
paramahansa... well said, if you're serious. Who knows who the F is speaking around here and who means what they say? Not that I care that much. I'll just say again, I prefer to have the flow of the four hour feed here at OS.
trig, I'm surprised that no one talks about the business of OS, and that of the parent Salon Media Group. Is there passive revenue gained from having someone open a page with ads on it? I don't know how that works, but I know that clicks, either accidentally or on purpose certainly do generate revenue...members may get pennies, but SMG gets dollars and it adds up.
BBE's post has probably had more than what is listed here for page loads, probably a quarter million. If you do an all time most viewed than it shows about 200,000 page loads for just that one post. Those are eyeballs coming to the site. So Thomas and/or Kerry can show to the bosses at SMG that the potential is still there to generate more money than it takes to keep the servers plugged in.
What is odd is that there is a simple, easy way for anyone to see a three hour feed, it takes two clicks from the home page.
There's no one on this site that can't click the tabs at the top of the OS home page and get exactly what they want, but it's too much work? People would shit bricks if it went back to the way it was, with the Most Viewed Week at the top of all the feeds. Thomas is simply doing what he thinks is best for OS for the time being. It's his baby, and I'm guessing there are precious few who could do his job. If you've seen his work or the hand behind the work on Big Salon and elsewhere, he's got the chops to do the job.
I can guarantee you that as soon as the new editor is announced and introduced and has an avatar and a Send Message link, she's going to be inundated both publicly and privately on how the fuck to do her job. Before she makes her first big editorial decision she'll be told exactly what to do by outraged members...just as Judy was. Judy handled it with grace and aplomb and made changes. We'll see what happens with the new one. Maybe there will be changes, maybe not, but it will be her baby. It is what it is. We're only really guests here after all.
bbd. We crank out a lot of that content and we don't get paid for it. We don't look to get paid for it either, so don't call us "guests". We are volunteer contributors. We're the Habitat For Humanity of OS. Where's the volunteer appreciation day?
With all due respect, Barry, we are NOT guests, we are content providers. Without us there is no Open Salon. It's a two way street and no one is above criticism - especially when it's over the top and self-mocking. Nothing undermines any organization more than a lack of critical thinking.
Harry, respect back to you friend. My point is not the semantics of the word guest or content provider, I'm happy with your definition or any other. We don't own anything here except the content we provide, and even that is given over to OS for them to use as they see fit according to the TOS, even those posts we've deleted for whatever reason, they still have the rights to use those as well. We're not owners, but participants, granted. Sojourners. SMG owns it, that's the point I was trying to make.
Ladies and gentlemen, if you look at some vintage covers from the 2008 beta period on OS that I posted about in November, 2008, you will see that many of the covers featured "Most Read (Past 24 Hours)" in the upper right hand column. The effect was to keep fresh material on the cover in my opinion. (We also did not have the tabs back then for checking recent posts.)
As someone who has worked in communications his entire career, I can tell you that a stale cover is not going to interest anyone. A constantly changing cover generates far more readers than one that rarely changes and gives more OS bloggers a chance to be on the cover, as has been stated repeatedly by others. You will notice some feeds that say "Most Read (Past Week)" on those old covers, but this parameter was not on day after day, such as we see with the two unchanging feeds on the cover currently. Most of the covers I show in that old post have "Most Read (24 Hours)" and, again, I believe that was a deliberate decision by the OS staff to keep the cover more timely and interesting.
Here's the link to my November, 2008 post showing a collection of vintage covers:
Interesting points all. Good to have at least one old timer, designanator, in the Y camp. Barry, I always understood that the only reason Pit Bulls gets all those hits is because of the image that Poyner used, which is at the top of the google search; that it has not a thing to do with people coming to OS and then 'clicking' on it. Am I incorrect in that? You probably know better than I. And all issues aside, I would be interested in your analysis of the possibilities of Xtranormal movies as an 'art form.'
Thomasina and Larry both made appearances. I consider that alone worth the effort. Yes, I knew even before Freaky made her movie, how to do the two clicks thing. Duh. That doesn't change my thoughts on preferring that the four hour, or possibly even 12 or 24 hour feed, as a compromise better serves me... right there on the front where I can see it at a glance. At least now I know that the PTB KNOW how I (and more than a few others) feel.
Now, MAYBE Thomas or Kerry or Joan Walsh or someone who represents Open might (maybe?) post a blog explaining SMG/Open's thoughts about this admittedly non-earthmoving issue. A simple shut up or fuck off Trig would suffice.
I crosspost non-meta stuff onto blogsplot where I have an IP tracker which gives me the path for how they found my page. Over 90% of my hits are from image searches, only rarely do they actually stop to read the original post - which is their loss, of course.
One of the delights of this broohahahah for me, is the freshness and originality which results when creative people respond to an issue with irreverence and dissent. Great art has its origins in such action. An artist who sought fame and attention in Paris prior to 1860, was required to have their work accepted and exhibited in the annual Salon exhibits. That is, until a group of whining artists began mounting their own exhibits, called the Salons des Refusés. Now, no one remembers the salon painters. In fact, to be dubbed a salon painter is considered a pejorative slam. The Salons des Refusés painters on the other hand, coalesced into the Impressionist movement.
Harry... I have a post from last summer called "the ravenous wolf murders of Idaho." It had I think 18 rates. I used images from the net of wolves shot by 'sports enthusiast.' When Token Tarheel put up one of his stats posts around Christmas I was very surprised to see it had like 30,000 'hits.' If you go to my most read at my blog it sits at the top, thanks I guess to the images.
greenheron thank you so much for that great bit of history. And for this. "Freshness and originality which results when creative people respond to an issue with irreverence and dissent. Great art has its origins in such action." I like the Salon Des Refus'es types. I was born on the wrong side of the tracks.
Trig, I mentioned the salon example, because this place associates itself with it conceptually and by name, in our OS case (I assume), with the history of the avant garde salon: Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, Cocteau, Picasso, et. al. The salon tradition has a history of being both conservative, rule heavy, and a delivery system for the academy party line, as well as self selected communities of guerrilla multi-discipline outsiders coming together, and as a result, collectively changing the status quo. Some of both here, as it is.
btw, your little videos are utterly hilarious. I love your characters. Good job palin!! really entertaining. (if I do another, I'm going to have to kick it up a notch or ten)
Emma is scorching hot in that leather Scarlett. Uma Thurman as Mrs. Peel in the new Avengers is freaking incredible by the way. And yes, I am happy.
Once upon a time they would change it up on the front top rated feed. Sometimes 4 hour, sometimes 12, sometimes top for the last week. That worked fine too as far as I was concerned.
Trig, I see the discussion going on here and it's nice to see the change on the cover this afternoon after all the posts and protests over the past 5 days or so.

Think those that expect OS to do a damn thing that the contributors would like to see is nigh on whining? Leave a large W.
All W's of course, will be thumbs down
Catching my breath laughing to point of exhaustion. Y? You're so funny.
Hello Thomas!!!
I KNEW you and emma were one. I KNEW IT!!!!!!!!
But then, I'm one of those hardliners who believe that we are ALL one.

The 4 hour feed is a great way to find the most recent brouhaha. Maybe that has something to do with why they got rid of it.
Seriously, there's an oil slick engulfing the Gulf and I'm supposed to get worked up over the stupid-assed OS feed?
Love ya, trigger man, but really, you need to pick your fights better.
