Sunday fall bicycling

Rate: 20 Flag

My bicycle is an old- make that really old Schwinn that was a gift to me. It was a friend's son's bike when he was a young teen, gathering dust while hanging upside down in their garage since those days. Now, the son is a thirty-ish.

Of the previously available 21 gear settings, there are three usable now due to a locked up rear derailleur; 7th, 14th, and 21st. I opt for 7th most of the time.

The back wheel is bent in one spot, so once every revolution it rubs the brake, making a small squeak and slightly impeding forward progress, but I've grown used to that.

Today, a perfect Autumn Sunday morning, 9 October 2011,  I hit the streets of San Francisco... then, sigh, woke up and bicycled Kansas City.

*********************************************************************

My hastily conceived, possibly over-ambitious plan would take me across the state line to the Westport district on the Missouri side; my precious Quik-Trip for hot chocolate coffee and people watching, then down to 39th through the residentials, and eventually back home.

To accomplish this, there's no getting around a huge hill ascent at the first leg of the odyssey, so, being gear challenged (and even older than my bike), with head hung in shame, I walk it up... no less than five miles--- pant! Ok, more like a half of one mile, my solace being that I get to coast back down this bastard hill at breakneck speed on my return while yelling yee-ha and catching bugs in my old smiling grill.

Once at the top, it's smooth riding with only smallish inclines and declines. 40th to Rainbow, south to 43rd, then east across the imaginary line into the state of Misery.. Missouri that is. It's a state rivalry thing.. ha. Actually, the Missouri side (as in above) is much preferrable to my mind.

While riding, I am able to forget- forget my age, my social status, my facebook page (facebook being the easiest to brain-dislodge), while watching forward to find the smoothest path through cracks and curbs, hitting the sweet spots.

I peddle hard and make some wind, then slow to near zero, looping circles and watching a squirrel or curious house cat watch me

I revert to childhood, playing the leaf game, where I pick out a series of fallen leaves ahead of me and hit each one with the front wheel.

Ah, the leaves, twirling downward lazily, blowing gently to gather loosely together before being swirled up and re-arranged yet again. I lay the bike on the sidewalk, the kickstand no longer being attached, and fall to my elbows right there in the street to make a movie, imagining that I am the kid from 'American Beauty' that filmed "The most beautiful thing."

"Sometimes there is so much beauty in the world I feel like I.. can't take it..." (from the linked clip).

 Then, off again-

Luckily...

.. the bar isn't open yet...

..so I do some (fairly innocent) photo-stalking, before making my way back to the yee-ha descent down to the humbalow..

..yes, the humble bunglaow.

bicycling good

Sounds great. Wish I could join you.
Wish you too could K.. seems we have a lot in common
uh.. could too ;)
A few years ago I inherited, what we called in the old days, a 'racer' or 10 speed. Even thought there's a women's mountain bike here, the Sekine ten-speed are my wheels of freedom. I ride like the wind on a path by the lake and when I get and tired and want to stop, I imagine I'm in Tour de France. Ha!

I love the idea of playing the "leaf game." I resort back to my youth too when riding and feel like I'm sixteen until my knee gets sore, that is. Oh and I never, ever, give a 2nd (or even 1st) thought to a FB page.

p.s. This could be called "Zen & The Art of tr ig's bicycling."
We think much alike Scarlett.

Riding like the wind, with the wind... all good. Don't know why I don't do it more often... well, I'm going to make it a routine (promise to self).
Thank you
It's my hip that's been paining me.
Are you really Kevin Spacey? I loved that circular video. Made me remember when I used to ride my bike in the leaves and right up the trunks of those big trees by accident.
so nice, the falling leaves, bike ride, great pics. you were six whole blocks from the house my mother grew up in. such a small world. :)
Damn Zanelle, my secret is out. Yes, I am Kevin Spacey.
Laughing about you riding up the tree trunks. You do get it..
Glad you enjoyed the little vid..
Candace, I came Westport (43rd) down Holly to 39th. Back up Bell, down Mercier... love the area. You've told me before but where did your Mom live? Thanks for reading, looking, visiting
Oh, my aunt had a yard like the one in the video but with a much longer hill. Now I'm filled with a deep desire to run into those leaves like a slip n' slide and shoot across the lawn and down the hill. Of course my bones would not survive the part where you hit the concrete. A leisurely bike ride with the smell of fall in the air would be plenty.

Thanks for taking us on this journey. Next time, please photo-stalk both genders just for balance. Some of us are Libras and have a need for balance.
west 45th, between fisher and springfield. when tom and i were in KC a couple years ago, i went to my grandmother's old neighborhood (where she moved in the 'fifties, after leaving w. 45th and where i remember visiting as a kid) over on the MO side, campbell between 26th and 27th. it was autumn then, too, and there were **huge** piles of leaves, taller than some of the parked cars. beautiful stuff, just beautiful. when you and jeff do photo posts like this, it's like i'm there again. thanks so much.
What a splendid occupation of time, in such beautiful weather, at such a fantastic time of year. Amazing. Nice pictures!
Autumn/Fall brings out the best in us, don't cha think? The smells and colors underscore better days of childhood; the crunching of the leaves under foot and tire...the comfort of a soft hoodie or fleece. The feeling of rotation beneath your feet, peddling enough energy to appreciate every curve, sight and rush of wind in your face. I wish I still had a bike.
I really like the slight slant to your photo compositions.
La'bleue.. that you got those memories and feelings means that my time doing this blog was well spent. Sorry however for the lack of balance in photo-stalking ;)

I remember now C.. Fisher and Springfield streets lie between the more major roads of Rainbow and Mission here on the OZ side. Heading up that way soon to the DG for pup food. Where you describe on Campbell is pretty much "the hood"now, crime and all, but it wasn't always that way. So glad you enjoyed this.

Sheila "splendid occupation of time" indeed. It WAS amazing for me. Didn't set out to take pictures and post but it became impossible not to.
Cathy! Wish I could have written as well in this post as you just did in that comment!!!

Miguela, not sure why I tilt the camera (phone) like that except to try to capture as much "up the road" as possible. Thank you. I like those two also.
got some hella nostrils don't I
What a nice ass....er, um...what a nice day for a bicycle ride!
Husband went out for a similar ride yesterday, came home looking exhausted and happy. Wonder what caught his eye?? : )
Just remember, sometimes the leaves run YOU over!! Teehee!!

Rated!
JT... she has a substantial booty for certain. Figured it was worth 1.63mb of space on the chip, plus it's a good shot down 39th looking back into OZ... yeah, that's it. Funny, she was carrying a go coffee and walked into D.B. Coopers down the way... a bar that was apparently open.
Your husband.. what can I say? He's a man, bless his heart!

The more I look, the more I like that shot of Gilhouly's with me and the reflection of sky and trees over the fishy... pretty neat.
Yeah News... like that time I chewed 7 large peyote buttons and ended up on my bike on the bad side of East St. Louis!
I guess Monday is a bad day to publish... actually, knew that... go figure why. Thanks to those that made it here. Off to a birthday party for my libra.
I was just told I had illegal characters in my comment. Let me try again - you pedal-walked five miles? I'd be flabbergasted about pedal-walking five hundred feet. You certainly go.
It's all looking good in Kansas City! ~r
WE LIKE RIDING OUR BIKES AROUND EAST ST. LOUIS, TINK SAYS THAT THE LAST TIME HE DID THAT, HE LOST HIS BIKE, TO SOME GUYS NAMED THRASH AND ROLL, SO WE KILLED EVERY THRASH AND ROLL WE MET THE LAST TIME WE WENT AND RODE OUR BIKES IN EAST ST. LOUIS!!

THEY DID NOT SCREAM, ONLY VAPORIZED!

WE LIKE YOUR FACE VERY MUCH, IT REMINDS US OF OUR MOTHER POD, SQUAD!

WE LIKE YOUR BIKE TOO, IT REMINDS US OF OUR FATHER POD, MOOKIE!

WE RATE YOU EVEN THOUGH IT IS MONDAY AND MONDAYS ARE DAYS FORBIDDEN TO RATE BLOGS!!

FISH BOOBS OUT!
Thanks for sharing that lovely autumn ride. You cancel some of the slanting light that happens in the fall with the slant in your viewframe. That cancels the slight sadness that fall brings. R
You're a blogging beast! How do you type, take pictures and ride a bike all at once? I can't even walk and breathe at the same time. And you think you've got problems....
I've got to replace my bike seat because it ripped. Also, I live at the top of a hill, so I don't bike much here. The bike in question is a Raleigh ten-speed that I got in 1972, so it's British. On the advice of an older student (I got this for and at college), I had center-pull brakes added so I can lean more upright than racing position. It's sturdy enough that even though it's an old racing-format (as opposed to trail) bike, it can take a curb.
Thanks for sharing. The leaves that have been falling around here are of a different variety but they are beautiful as well. Keep up the good exercising (both physical, and mental- especially the writing.)
get a rake and get to work, boy!
QT is indeed a great people watching venue. Your video inspires me to take you on a virtual tour of Reynold's Nature Preserve, which is incredibly beautiful this time of year with a near constant rain of leaves and the path made bright by the yellow and orange leaves that carpet it this time of the year.
Was just in that area a couple of weeks ago. It had been awhile since I ventured over there. A high school girlfriend and I are on a quest to find the best burger and beer place in KC. It was Westport Flea Market last time, this weekend; we hit the Plaza.
