On his 'end of boot' ceremony, Chicago

Rate: 38 Flag

How to feel, how to be anything but supportive of you?

True, I don't like your employer, certainly detest the military industrial complex, find repulsive the Afghan and Iraq wars, all war for that matter.. yes, and the system in general. War profiteers and mad bankers, one in the same? If not, certainly on the same team, in the huddle together drawing up the next play. Dick Cheney was quarterback, but now calls in orders from the sideline as his blood is pumped continuously by a machine- no heartbeat. Die you cockroach... you Darth Vader wannabe!!

Yes son, Dick Cheney is on the board of directors. Please tell me, especially considering the branch of service you've sworn vows to, that you don't like dick. Sorry kid, couldn't resist that one. I know you understand, and that possibly, you admire Cheney.. na... NO! I forbid it!!

Really though, what does all that matter when it comes to us

I was impressed by the military precision at your graduation, the marching, the state flags thing, the music.. was all superb. You said the flute chick screwed up terribly in practice. I'm assuming some petty officer got in her ass about that, because she was perfect, or maybe I'm easily impressed, ya know?

I cried several times. I mean, what the fuck? OK, mostly it was when your "division" marched in, you at the back because you are tall, as you explained. You told me in advance where to look for you, and there's no mistaking your eyebrow, even at a distance. My kid!

You used to stay up 'til two or three in the morning, and now wake up at "0500" and say things like HOOYAH MOTHERFUCKER.

Sigh... when we found each other on that massive slab floor, 522 newly minted sailors and their families all clamoring... man, that was special. I'll swear you didn't lose a tear, for fifty bucks.

Me? Well I just hope someone didn't slip and fall in the puddle I left, and if they did, the Navy will cover all costs anyway... Fuck 'em!

A place I bet you'll remember forever no matter where you go and what you do...

Rated for the heartfelt admiration and the link to the Cheney replacement ticker. Doesn't that thing require blood?
His blood has been replaced with Prestone aka.. thx my friend
:( NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! HE'S NOW PART OF THE AMERICAN WAR MACHINE!!! ~weep~ :D Congrats sir, you're the father of a killing machine, HURRRRR---RAAAAH!!!! :D

" or maybe I'm easily impressed, "

I'll go with that, you still read me after all these years!!! ~hug~
Tink :D yes I iz easily impressed, as are you! HURRRR---RAAAAH!
My kid is a killer now... cest la vie
I believe in our sons and daughters, tr ig. They are forming themselves now and, as their parents, our thoughts/positions/influences have not been eclipsed by the War Machine. They are change agents - They will improve everything.
tr ig

this was just,
wow... and I've got to say,

still seeing the Last of the Mohicans
there... along with some of that Michelangelo

and alright...
maybe now even a little Norman

Rockwell,
but just that 1%!!

please, hope you understand...
Great stuff, great son. It's amazing what makes parents cry but this I understand. HOO-AH! And congratulations to you both.
Rated.
Sigh, sorry they have to grow up but glad he did it well. Love and hugs to you friend.
I am so hoping my son follows in the footsteps of yours, and those are words I never thought I'd say.
Funny how our smart kids choose a path completely opposite ours -- for now, anyhow. Takes a strong man to cry in public, Trigster. I cheated, I always wore sunglasses to my kid's achievements. Happy Proud Dad. Good work, Eli.
Linnnnn, change agents.. I like that a lot.
What Linnnn said. I think they will improve things. All mine needs is encouragement.
Ah. You made me tear up. I wish you both the happiest of futures.
The softer side of you has always revealed what a true man you are. Rated.
Who is not crazy about a handsome man in a uniform? Congrats to eli and proud dad.
Monday night football! Chiefs kind of dominating..

II I understand!
Just look at him, he's a grownup now, completely comfortable in his skin and with what he's accomplished. You both have a lot to be proud of, trig. I'll add a tear to the puddle.
Those are not the eyes of a killer my friend, they're the eyes of a wise one ; me thinks I'll go with Linnnn's change agent as well :).

Rated for HOO RAH Eli, you're in the Navy now!
Our kids drag us kicking and screaming behind them, don't they. And we willingly follow. Congratulations to you both.
Eli reminds me that behind each buzz-cut walking-arsenal in a war-zone can be a dreamy long-haired kid with a guitar & a proud dad ~ thanks for that.
Weird about Cheney.
I want to believe, that the young men and women who choose to be a part of the military of this country know little or nothing about politics. I, for one, do not see any connection whatsoever. I see a distinct line between the two, although they seem to get all tangled up in the mess that is our two farty system. Yes, I said farty.

The right and honor to defend one's country is amazing, brave, prideful and shows foresight far beyond any political scheme.

Every country on the planet has a military presence that is bound to protect and prevent terrorism, violence and dishonor to one's motherland. It is the hardest job to commit to, but once committed, it is survival of the fittest and luckiest. It is a gamble. But it is so much more than all that. While it angsts the parents to their grave, our sons and daughters who select service to country as their creed, are the last one's standing. Standing for what their parents instilled (somehow), standing for the principles that made our country great and standing for what is right and good in all of us. There is no shred of politics in this decisive life choice. Seriously, they are too young and unfettered by the politics of the common man (and woman). They haven't even begun to be touched/tainted by politics. They make a choice that is pure and genuine to their inherited nature. You, dear dad, taught your son the importance of every aspect of life, pure and simple. He saw the beauty in all that you exposed to him from such an early age. He is very proud of who he is because of you. He just wants you to be proud of him now. As I am sure you are. Thanks god, you and man like you, raised sons and daughters who are willing to risk their lives to become dads like you. And to give back. To fathers, mothers and country. He is a reflection of you and he is a reflection of what this country means to him. And he stands in no ones' shadow. He is your son, but he is his own man. I saw that a few summers back. xo
I really miss Eli. He's doing the right thing though. Fuck.
Good one Tri ig, both the writing and the boy..
You have it backwards: Vader is a Cheney wannabe.

Now his real battle starts and I hope he does things on his own terms and not get gobbled up by the misguided military.
His service is a great thing. Now it is up to pull levers every November to make sure his service is misused as little as possible.
I can't write. Now it is up TO US to pull levers...
I WILL, am determined to, answer all these comments individually, and I will.. when I get back. Have to go $ chasing..
Thank you!
How could you NOT feel ambivalent, about your dear acorn saying stuff like oh five hundred and hooyah motherf*cker, and no doubt there were some big portraits of that Bush fellow on the aircraft carrier plastered around the camp, that hopefully your boy put some magic marker mustaches on, but even if not, damn, he does look good!
Oh, I feel the love here, the protectiveness and the knowledge of how things really are, yet the pride too. Sending love and support for the days ahead.
Damn you, tr ig..... you make me cry when you write like this. God only knows what will happen when you become a grandpa!!!!
As a wife of a Veteran, I have the utmost admiration for our soldiers, despite the insitution that runs them. I understand your dissonance, as well as your heart-felt pride.
I've been to that ceremony - it is breathtaking. I believe that most soldiers are just men and women doing a job - and they bring to that job the same compassion that the rest bring to their civilian jobs - the military needs good people like your boy/man. Great post
Scylla, knowing what you've been through makes me very humble and thankful. I appreciate you man..

bleue.. you know the whole story, well, most. Thank you much.

keri h, THAT is a pretty deep and serious statement! I hope your son does well in whatever he chooses.

Scarlett~ Hell, I didn't care who saw. Just glad there isn't video!

d-rat, yeah, Linnnnnnnnnnn's comment is right on. Amen to encouragement.
fingerlakeswanderer.. my tears were joyous ones. Yours too I bet. Thx

cartouche, long time no see! Very kind of you.

Bernadine, I like the turqoisish camouflage ones myself, but the good old "Navy Blues" (which are black) look good too. Thank you.

ff aka c.. I'll take that tear!

Seer, anchors aweigh! Na, he's not a killer. He's a medic.

Margaret, yes, I follow, and yes kicking and screaming.. but he's mine. What else can I do?
Kim G.., yeah he's a long haired dreamer at heart, and Cheney is evil incarnate!!

tai.. YEP

Cathy, you know him, so to speak. At least met him and hung out with him. He still speaks of you and Mary and our trip out to Boulder. His "politics" differ a bit from mine-- yes, he has his own thoughts politically. If I had to put his views in a box, I suppose I would label it libertarian.. Dunno, doesn't matter much in the big scheme. Thanks to you for your comment my friend.
sky... your tears added to the puddle.. sigh

Julie, wish we could have met!

Jeff, wish you could have been there. There was a seat saved for ya. Yeah, he's doing what's right for him.

Rita, sweet as ever. Thx much

ANFSCD, Yeah, Vader wishes he had Cheney's doctors. Eli will remain true to his self I do believe.
Kosher... wish I believed that us pulling the right lever would make a fucking bit of difference.

greenheron-- he knows, like any person with sense, that Bush is an idiot and drove this country into the abyss. :)))

Sheila, thank you and sending love backatcha

Gary.. takes a real man to cry buddy! A grandbaby would be kinda cool, ya know. He has his eyes on the Air Force girls down at Fort Sam Houston, so who knows?

Purple.. that you understand, maybe, means I did my job here.

LammChops "I've been to that ceremony - it is breathtaking"
So you know! Much appreciated :)
Tr ig, congrats for raising a man!
One day I hope our military personnel will train not just to fight, but also to come to the aid of all the folks at home when we are besieged by tornadoes, hurricanes, thunder-snow storms and earthquakes. Then the higher-ups won't have to go looking for a fight to keep our forces busy, and they will be well equipped to earn a living when they get out. They will also be less likely to be injured or killed far from home . . .
ForeverMom, daughter of a sailor
4evermom, great concept, build roads and bridges and win minds here at home.. wow

Snarky, I know right!!
Congratulations on your son's achievement Trig :-)

And on a fine post. You certainly compressed the crux of the problem into some fine prose "War profiteers and mad bankers, one in the same? If not, certainly on the same team, in the huddle together drawing up the next play. " Brilliant!
Trig, do you realize you and I were in Chicago at the exact same time? Me at a peace conference and you at a military graduation? Perhaps there is balance somewhere in this big ol' world. You've got lots to be proud of, and I'll keep your boy in my prayers too.
Kelly, yes... I'm brill!!! Thanks much

Kate- now that is ironic alright..
Almost forgot to kick the cat this morning:

Congrats on having a sailor! I wish him a lot of exciting places and people and very little of the ugly side.
I have to wade through the testosterone to see the tender heart of a proud father. This is awesome...and a great pic of your son.
Phyllis and Brazen P.
thank you and thank you
Gosh dammit you're making me cry! Love the pics. That last one is terribly creative.
