Our big fat Greek restaurant-- with belly-dancer Zaina Ali

Rate: 18 Flag

From over my right shoulder, the waiter said "Hey big fella, you're about done with that plate, right. I mean, what do you have left there... a lemon wedge?"

The Greek busgirl, or waiters' assistant (?) had been through a few minutes earlier, and to my mind, snatched the other plates a bit too soon. I guarded mine defensively. Hell, there was still at that time a quarter of soft warm pita, some zatziki, and yes... a lemon wedge. I wasn't ready to give it up then, but now, half embarrassed, reluctantly let it go- without licking.

"Dessert?" Very rarely do I eat dessert..."yeah, the custard." She declined, but...

      ..."shots of ouzo?"

"Sure!" I spoke for the both of us without consulting her. Half a minute later, he brought two shots that looked much like seafoam green listerine, and taste barely better, whoa... but hey, it's a Greek restaurant!

      Opa!

Tasso's is the name of the joint, there in the Waldo district of K.C., Mo. since '76. The food is genuine Mediterranean; fresh, and flavorful as you'd expect, but the atmosphere and live entertainment is an equal part of the experience at Tasso's.

      - Not an empty table in the place either. It was after all, Friday. Friday and Saturday nights are belly dancer night- the same dancer they've had since I can remember, the enchanting Zaina Ali!

I'll let you guess her age, but will give a clue-- last time I saw her dance there...... was in the 80's (when I was a child... *cough*).

From our table, a bit after 9. Zaina is always fashionably late...

Something about the lighting, her bright belly-dancer's get up, or the fast motion (or all of the above), wouldn't let the usually trusty phone cam get a good capture. I shot over twenty, and they came out.. like this. Think I'll say I did it that way on purpose.

This one captures her pretty well...

There.. she stood still! This is the part where she gives free lessons to all the girls-- even provides the noisy little coin-laden wrap skirts for all. I thought I took a movie of the whole lesson, but it ended up being two seconds. Oops!

Second girl from the left is my sweetie, who by strange chance in fact takes lessons from Ms. Z every Thursday evening. Zaina whispered in my ear after the performance that she is the best shimmier in her class. Opa!

Now, this movie below (1:33) actually came out fairly well for some reason, although Z leaves the stage at about one minute to go work the audience.

Great night out, and thanks to "groupon," CHEAP--

      Opa!!!

trying AGAIN... vid should be PUBLIC now... wow.. sorry
To those who commented before and those to come... the video works, now? It's totally amateur and not shot through a proper device by a talented individual, but this blog is not complete without it. Therefore deleted the previous, even with 6 rates and ten comments 'til I could fix, which I think-hope I have.
Opa!
Two BIG Opa is what I see! There is a place in Fort Worth similar to this except it is Lebanese. Byblos. They have a cool hookah bar attached. Like it.
opa!! nice shimmy there, trig. ha - i just saw the account name on the video - trigpalinful - and cracked up. good ouzo is nice stuff too. here's to dancing the dance of lurve ...

oh, and those are some impressive ::((@)) ((@)):: zaina's got. whew.
Nothing sexier than women who love their bodies! Opa!
What are those thum cymbals called asia? zilli? I like them.

OPA! And out for some transitory necessities ... to THE BURBS!
Tr ig - it looks like you had a bootylicious time! When W and lived in Detroit we would go downtown to Greektown. Opa! I took belly dancing lessons many, many, many years ago. Never could get my zils and hips to work together. I could do one or the other but not both! :-)
PS Zaina is awesome!!!!
I wish we had a greek restaurant in our town! LOVED it! R!...limps away craving Greek food!
I like the sideways part...
Zills, also zils or finger cymbals, (from Turkish zil, "cymbals") are tiny metallic cymbals used in belly dancing and similar performances. Wikipedia.
ccdarling, keeping your hips and your zils working together is HARD! omg, I can't get it
OPA! Trig. This was fun to see you all just celebrating life!
sometimes we need to LIVE. I like the Greek attitude.

Opa.. and all that!

Zaina is pretty cool eh :)
I don't think I've ever been to a Greek restaurant and that one looks like so much fun!

Um... I second femme's comments!

OPA!!!! : )
And I thought I was the only one who wants to lick my plate. Glad you had fun. Zaina is pretty impressive.
I just bought a hula hoop to do exercises for my hip and back. I used to be a champ when I was a kid, long way to go. Aside from the good times, I think I need more sashay back in my caboose, and most of my exercises too rigid (yoga really not so sexy). Now, I will have to find some belly dancing classes on Hulu, because if I can move like that, I will probably feel good instead of just not bad.
It takes the right kind of man to appreciate a well rounded woman.
Photos and video show up really dark for me. I downloaded a photo to "work" it and got it brightened up a lot. Interesting place! Cheers!

Me too!!! No, I've never seen her dance there. I was a child in the 80's too! Well acted like one anyways.
Opa Opa Opa...and a few broken dishes for good measure!

Hubbahubba. Did you try the stuffed grape leaves?
No grape leaves although I have eaten them many times in the past. I had the old stand by "gyro platter," her grilled chicken on a stick. The chicken dish she ordered was not on the menu Friday, so they replaced with a different variety with apologies and a free plate of spinach and cheese stuffed filo dough fluffy and delectable things which I didn't note the name of. It was noisy! Also, dessert and ouzo shots turned out to be "on the house." Of course, no extra charge for the live entertainment, although we tipped her five bucks.
Good times... and I'll be going back much sooner than later.

Thanks for reading and watching everyone.
hot stuff. thx for sharing. weird new av there dude.
The spinach and cheese in filo dough was spanikopita. My wife makes a great pan of it once in awhile. Quick and much easier, and of course spendier would be to check the frozen section at a Trader Joe's if you have them there.
Ah yes, spanikopita was it. And yes, we have Trader Joe's, or so I hear.
Love those things!
Story of the av is in my bio vzn
When the music's over - turn out the lights. This was worth the revisit.
Wow! Gotta love KC for variety!
Oh man. I can almost taste the Roditis
