40 Years ago tonight! I was driving (in the driving rain) up the New York State Thruway from White Plains, obviously not having heard Arlo Guthrie declare "The New York State Thruway is closed, man"! But it wouldn't have mattered. We still would have forged ahead. Did we have a choice? We were called, we were the chosen....and anyway, we had tickets!
Excuse me but I just had to detour to MapQuest. I Don't think there was Mapquest 40 years ago, but I did find out it should have been about a two hour drive. Kind of sounds like the 3 hour cruise. As I said, the rain was driving probably faster than we were, so we were into that two hour drive about 4 hours now when we came to a halt. Hmm...half a million hippies,er, people divided by 4 per car? equals, well, a hell of a lot of cars on the New York State Thruway! Which is why, if my friend Arlo had a cell phone in 1969, he could have called and warned.
There were 15 of us in a three car caravan. When we came to a halt on the Thruway (which was closed, man) we calculated we were about 22 miles from Mecca. It was raining...hard...and it was 22 miles! We had a couple of very sturdy tents...and a lot of drugs...I guess we decided it was a no brainer. Because we never made it any further. But, we had the time of our lives that weekend. I don't think any of us ever regretted not walking the 22 miles only to be covered in mud.
Tonight, as I watched the Woodstock Movie on TV (oh come on, it's the 40th Anniversary and I was 'almost" there...I HAD to watch) anyway, I came to the realization that in less than one month's time I shall be in the City of my birth, the City of New York, for the first time in 35 years. Don't ask, that will be another post. And as I just learned from MapQuest (yea, for the 21st century) I will be only two hours away. I will assume that there will not be 500,000 people divided by 4 per car, on the New York State Thruway so that I can probalby make the drive in two hours.
You know wht? I'm going to do it. I'm going to actually make it all the way to Max Yasgur's Farm...a little late for the party...but damn it, I'm going to finish the journey.
Look for my post about the first of October about how it went!
