Ok, so it's been a few years since I've been in a Catholic Church!
Push Button???

These pictures were taken in September 2009 on my first trip back to my "hometown" of New York City in 34 years.

Push button to light candle?
Beautiful. Push button - is a surprise to me too. Guess it's been a while.
The spirit is in the flame is like the spirit in this post. You capture much here, trilogy.

Daunting picture of Lady Liberty. She's got her work cut out for her. xo
Not just push button, but pay $1. R
I love NY and these pix! r!
oooooooh, i give you the prize! these are so cool and quirky. great stuff, trilogy!
Great shots. I haven't seen the push-button candle either.
Ah, the beauty of technology invades the religious world. Now that's progress! R-
OMG! Push button and pay $1! Really???
Come on, push button religions acts? That first photo is awesome.
Wonderful photos. Electronic candles?
well, of course I love these!
Especially love the lady and the storm.
Tril, you have a great eye. Thanks for these offbeat visions.
Push button candles, OK. I guess is an animatronic priest in the confessional, just insert a fiver and get instant absolution.
wonderful pictures ... very evocative of NYC. r
Marlene, a great view of the city here! (The ad for 'soft toilet paper for tough people' is a funny sight on that subway car!)
Did you push the button and pay your dollar ? What happened then ? Very good !!!!
Love that first image!
Nice pictures. There is nothing on earth that compares to the NY subway. Push button to light candle? That's depressing.
Thanks all. this was fun.
Push button?? I'm very lost, here. That first image ... wowzers, Trilogy. Happy 4th, thank you for these.... (especially that first one... gorgeousssss)
There is a title of a book in that one.."Push button to light candle", I'm thinking we should run with that one. Great photos. Have a wonderful 4th, I hope you will be with your daughters.

Thanks Amanda. These were from last Sept on my first trip back to NY in 35 years.
Sradi: I think your on to something. It's all about the modernization of prayer. I can picture the little woman in black hunched over with a flame in hand lighting the candle and grieving for her loved one now gone. somehow, pressing a button does not give me the same vision.
This was actually taken in the church I grew up in. My deceased sister's name was on the wall above these candles. I threw in a dollar...but did not press the button...it was just too much....i did get a good picture, though!
Huh. I went to Saint Patrick's Cathedral last spring and I didn't have to push a button! I love your choice of photographs. I love New York! _r
Love the push button photo. Thanks. A former Catholic.
I love all of these, but the subway pic is outstanding!
Heh, they certainly know how to push my buttons. Great lady liberty and subway shots. R
Excellent pictures of the Big Apple.
Lady Liberty belongs on the cover of Life, and the subway photo on a movie poster. Wonderful!
Lady Liberty looks like she's holding off the storm and protecting America. May she succeed ! Congratulations on your pics. ~R
Wonderful Americana. That subway picture is award material.
Poor old Mrs Miller must be spinning in her grave. She used to give me 25 cents to go to church and light five candles for her!

Haven't been back to NY in 25 years. I think it would be enlightening.
Nice photos!
ocngrats on your COVER!
The candle photo is priceless...but also liked the subway photo a great deal too.
Nice to see you on the cover - Yeah, it's been awhile since I was in a Catholic Church (or NYC, for that matter) - I liked lighting the candles. Pushing a button just doesn't seem to have the same ooomph, know what I mean???? Great post!
Maybe insurance won't let the church trust people enough to light a match.....That was bizarre!
Love all your waiting ladies...
Lovely waiting for all
Just in that great city of ours --well, not "just," more like in June, before the heat wave, thank god (that's what pushing a button gets you) anyway, I fell in love again with the place and got to spend an evening on my own---took myself to dinner, where I was able to have several glasses of wine because I was not DRIVING (the curse of southern California) and then I went for a long, long walk, first to the park, then up 5th to the Empire State Building, then back to my hotel on 54th between 6th and 7th, such a treat.

Would love to be there on some future July 4th to see the fireworks on the river.

Loved your photos. Looks a bit like Lady Liberty is *causing* the storm---which some might argue has, on occasion, happened. Did you know that person on the subway or is it some random stranger who didn't mind your camera?
Hey ma.h., my friend. good to see you here and great to hear you were in the old stomping grounds. When I went last yeat I was at the LeParker Meridian at 57th btwn 6th & 7th. yes, the lady on the subway was totally a random stranger who I don't think even noticed the camera!
