Chihuly's Garden

Rate: 18 Flag

 20120904_123415

To end my 3 day Labor Day Weekend, I decided to take a fourth.

We are going for a record here in Seattle, with this being the 48th day in a row with no rain.  The driest streak is 51 days, and that was back in 1951.

So, with the sun shining, and with my oldest friend, we went to Seattle Center on Tuesday to see the Chihuly Glass Exhibit, which has only been open for about 4 months.  I shall let the pictures speak for themselves.

These were above - just like the Glass Bridge at the Tacoma Glass Museum.

I was in heaven - with Dale Chihuly.

Our very own designanator went to the Rhode Island School of Design when Chihuly was teaching there.

Believe it or not, sometimes I get tired of Chihuly but I saw this exhibit at RISD a few years ago and fell in love all over again.
Hard to believe you could get tired of it - but glad you fell in love all over again. Thanks for visiting nerd.
My cousin went to Chihuly's famous glass school, Pilchuck, which is north of Seattle. She introduced me to Mr. Chihuly. He was working with some people blowing glass. At the time, he was making a lot of striped glass which looked like sea shells, when it was finished. My cousin married another glass artist, and they frequently work for Mr. Chihuly, as well as what they do with their own art. Everything he does seems to turn into gold.
Hi Steven. That's very cool about your cousin. These days, Chihuly has teams doing the actual work - since he lost (or damaged) an eye in a motorcycle accident some years ago.
Way cool. Great pictures. Seriously vivid.
i'm a big fan of Chihuly and you. Wonderful photo essay.
Oooh, very cool! Would love to see that in person. Wonder if its coming to DC.
Thank you for sharing all of this.
Saw an exhibit in St. Petersburg, FL....Was wowed! Cousin is sculptor and encouraged the visit. There is a huge piece in the lobby of one of the casinos in Connecticut. Just amazing photos. Thank you.
You know, I always enjoy going to the glass museum in Tacoma. He also sponsors a middle school off 6th ave where he attended as a boy. They have an after-school glass blowing class used as an incentive for kids with behavioral issues. The kids earn minute of good behavior during the day to spend in the glass blowing class and then they put up their creations for sale. I think it's fabulous.
Marlene, what a great show of his work and your photos really capture the beauty of the pieces so nicely. Interesting to also see the Space Needle in two of the photos...what a great juxtaposition: '60s "Race for Space" and contemporary Chihuly!

Thank you very much for the very nice mention about my time at the school when he was also there and for including the link to my post about him! It was amazing to be in the same school and all of the stories related to that. Providence and RISD were very fortunate to have him creating so many wonderful pieces and teaching there for approximately a decade, as well!
Marlene, this is just such a good work. The image reflections so smart and unique, your work is just beautiful, and to me seeing this for the very first time, it seems so magical. This could be such a beautiful book, I mean your work here...Rated, maybe one day I will be able to visit. Thank you for sharing!!!
Ah, Chuck, thanks.
Shuttterburg: I know he has traveling shows. This one is permanent - they leased the space at the foot of the Space Needle for the next 30 years.
Annaliese & Ande - thanks for stopping by. Glad you liked the pics.
Peeling: Didn't know about the middle school in Tacoma. That's very cool. I love the Glass Museum in Tacoma too. They have much more than just Chihuly.
John - thought you would like this! I thought the first one was so creative witht he Space Needle in the background, until, on my way out I picked up a brochure and there was that exact shot. Apparently, everyone take it. ha. But this one's mine...and I love it.
I married a stained glass and warm glass artist so no surprise we love Chihuly. One similar to the last one was in the annex at the Portland when we visited in May and then we were in Seattle for that hot spell. These are so well shot and I thank you for showing them off.
Beautifullly done Marlene. Saw an exhibit here of Chihuly in St. Pete awhile back. I could use one of those vase-like pieces on the stands for my coffee table!

Simply astounding that these are made of glass...
Trilogy - thanks for these beautifully shot photos and thanks for introducing me to him. I hadn't been aware of Chihuly before but I certainly be on the lookout for his work from now on. His glasswork is stunning and your shots show him to his best advantage. Thank you for your photo essay.
trilogy,

Thanks for posting this. The work in this exhibit is beautiful.
Beautiful exhibit. And a great way to extend the weekend. I'm curious as to how big the boats are.
I am a big fan of art glass and am in great awe of Dale Chihuly. Thank you so much for sharing these beauties with all of us.

Thanks Stacey, I'm in awe of anyone that is a glass artist. "hot spell" in Seattle? I must have been out of town that day.
Stathi: Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm glad I introduced you to Chihuly.
Toritto: Then your coffee table would be worth about $10,000!
Terri: Thanks
Gerri: So glad you have now been introduced. His work is really amazing.
Diary: thanks for stopping in
jl: the boats are full size row boats - whatever that size may be. The way they were lit and with the glass floor as reflection, these were one of my favorites.
Lezlie: My pleasure :)
L: So sweet, thanks.
These are so gorgeous. Thank you for bringing them to us./r
Damn I would like to see that. How long that exhibit on for? I'm due for a visit to my daughter...
This post has won a Readers' Picks Award.
@Myriad: I'm told that the site has a 30 year lease. So don't worry.
Thanks for the Reader's Pick Award. Much appreciated.
