Gracie Allen’s Classic Roast Beef Recipe

Rate: 16 Flag

“One large roast of beef, one small roast of beef

Take the two roasts and put them in the oven.

When the little one burns, the big one is done.”

                                                                --Gracie Allen

It doesn't get any easier than that: the recipe and the joke.

Recently, I was trawling around the Internet while thinking about old-time comedy acts, when I stumbled upon the above "recipe" by one-half of one of the most sublime comedy teams ever.

Gracie Allen’s on-stage and on-air persona was considered a scatterbrained housewife. In today’s world, her stage act would be considered an insult to most worldly women.

However, her punch lines were of the delayed reaction time. It took you a few seconds (sometimes minutes) to get her and really appreciate the sophistication in her humor. For instance, “this used to be a government of checks and balances. Now it's all checks and no balances.” Even Letterman couldn’t come up with that one.

And the best part of her jokes (and those of her generation) was that she did not have to drop the F-bomb every two seconds to get a laugh.

Gracie Allen, George Burns’s better half (and comedic foil), would have been 108 years old yesterday.

Happy Birthday, Gracie!

Some more witticisms by Gracie:

  • When I was born I was so surprised I didn't talk for a year and a half.
  • When my mother had to get dinner for 8 she'd just make enough for 16 and only serve half.

Gracie, those are lovely flowers where did you get them?

George I went to visit Clara in the hospital today. Remember you said when I go to visit Clara I should take her flowers? So I did.

(abridged version)
A true Classic duo who I loved greatly.
Rated with hugs
I am probably one of a handful who used to watch them live on TV in the 50s. She was a classic comedienne. For many years, the scatterbrain wife shtick was copied by others. rated for Memories
A role model for telling like it is. I love your tribute. Theirs was one of my favorite shows growing up.
Beautiful....xoxox
They were truly classics. George always said she was the better performer. He had a whole second career after her death, which is amazing in its own right. He clearly loved the woman, as evidenced by the way he spoke of her later in his life.
A great, great comedy duo, but also a love story for the ages. George Burns used to go to her vault and talk to her just like people do in a normal conversation. The were two or a kind!
By today's standards a lot of the old comedy is pretty offensive . . . at the same time, there was a cleverness that is unparalleled.
I loved "Say g'night, Gracie"!
Good night, Gracie.
Wonderful tribute to one of the funniest people ever to "grace" the public! Sadly, your comment about her act being an "insult" to today's world is probably true. Would that we could be "insulted" by this kind of hilarity more! msp
A duo that'll never be topped. Even as a young kid, I loved these two.

Thanks for the cool memories Trudge.
Geeez. I'm getting OLD! I remember this stuff like it was, well, just 50 years ago!
