Extreme Super Moon Over Miami! with Photos

Rate: 27 Flag

And Bonus Moral!

By now, everyone has heard about the Extreme Super Moon which we were suppose to see on March 19, 2011. An Extreme Super Moon is when a full moon gets its closet to the Earth. According to astronomers, this is a once in an 18 year occurrence. It is suppose to cause higher than usual tides and some flooding. But it is really nothing to worry about.

So I went out last night to take some photos of this REALLY BIG MOON. However, I encountered a slight problem …

Extreme Super Moon was blocking my doorway.*

Even my cats were curious.**

All kidding aside, the time when the moon was supposed to get its closest was at three in the afternoon.  I didn’t know this little fact until after I went outside, took these snaps and started to write this post.

Moral of the story: do your research before you write!

**Yes! those are my cats.

Who just loves you, Cathy? (In a strictly platonic kind of of way)

Scott Mendelson This one has nothing to do with the moon, but it has lots of "stars" in it.

I'm having a hard time posting...got attacked by a werewolf last night.
LC Neal, yes the moon was very bright last night.

Elijah, at least they don't suck like vampires do.
Just waking up...Trying to figure out where I am and where all the feathers came from.
Linnnn, are you a werewolf?
great pics. thanks!
Trudge--I've read that female bass are supposedly especially randy at a supermoon episode. I don't fish, but I'd guess if I did, I'd find that heartening!
Brain, I'm glad you liked them.

Jerry, but those bass chicks are so slipper especially when wet. I know I dated a few and they were hard to "lure". However when you got one, they were like a "fish out of water."
Clever. It was so bright here I didn't need my flashlight to put the hens up for the night.
I just LOVE the unique composition of the shot with the cats. Looks like some PS nonsense except that I'm sure you didn't do that. Very cool photos.

Rita, ty.

Matt, thanks and I see you like to keep your chickens "cooped up".
Robin, while I was trying different focal lengths and exposures the cats walked into the frame and made the shots more interesting. And yes I did do some PhotoShop nonsense.
Nice photos! I saw that spotlight moon over Miami last night, as well. It was especially gorgeous over Biscayne Bay. Like LC, I even took a photo and placed it on facebook.
Lea Lane, us Miamians love our moons.
Trudge, you're hilarious.
Hey, I didn't know the perigee was at 3pm of the 19th. I should have looked up that tidbit of info.
As the NASA video said, the "bigness" or the perceived bigness only seems to come when the moon is close to the horizon. Otherwise, 14% bigger is not really noticeable.
Good post. I'll be watching! wb :-)
Wonderful pics

William, thank you. I didn't know either, but the moon did look brighter than usual last night.

Romantic Poetess, she definitely was beaming last night. I'm honored that my photos inspired you to write such a lovely verse.
Wow! That thing in the doorway should be wearing a cape.

I'm one to take moon shots as well (and I'm not talking liquor). I'm always disappointed how small the moon looks in my photos compared to how big and bright it appears in the sky.

Also, I wish OS had the function to click on the image to enlarge it.

Anyway, great post. I enjoyed it.
ane, my cats say, "thank you." Yes! I do love saying, "Super Moon". It's like saying, "Pompano," only cooler.

Mikidemillion, it certainly should. I could make the images larger but it would take up to much memory.
Excellent pix! I've taken moon shots in the past, and they're difficult. You got great resolution!
AtHomePilgrim, thank you. Trust me, it was the best of many bad ones.
I see you changed your own light bulb!! JK..great shots..love the cats at the door pic!
I can barely take my eyes off of your moon photo doorway with your adorable kitties staring at the moon's glow. That is an award winning photo! Stunning! My post was surely inspired by this rare moon and its effects took me through some twists and turns in the spell it left on my mind and imagination. Thanks very much for the mention to my writing and the "Moon Love" spell I cast over you. And here I was going to give you my best moon shot until I saw the words, "strictly platonic." Last night I would have said "buzz kill" but by the dawning light and steady snow, I am accepting of its necessity as I warm to my first cup of Kona. As well, the moon can make one silly and you know me by now...I just like to mess with ya a little. Have a sunny day in your corner of the world. Very low visibility here and near complete white out. The moonshine is wearing off and the need for shoveling out is the day's toil. Loved your moon over Miami. Breathtaking and extraordinary.
Enviable Photoshopping! I wanted to take pictures, but by the time the moon was visible through the clouds (smog layer) it was no longer spectacularly large. Someday...
Satori1, not only do I change my own light bulbs, but I have to clean their box too.

Just Cathy, Damn! I knew I should have left that "platonic" line out. Yes, your poem, while not directed at me, did cast a spell on me.

The cats got in the picture by accident. I was trying different exposures and focal lengths when they walked up to the doorway. Luckily for me, they made the shot much more interesting.
Snippy the Grammar Dog, you can take pictures? Please teach my cats.
This is too much fun. No moonshine beams in broad daylight. apology?

I followed Just Cathy. I hope you and her go off together and play baseball.

No moon for us .. rated with hugs
Thanks for this . It was so impressive!
I wonder if it's hard to be so beautiful every single second. I'm going to guess it feels great most of the time.
Your picture reminds me of a cartoon I saw once, a man and his son driving, a huge moon right behind them in her own car...the boy, a bit worried, the dad consoling them both saying, 'Don't worry son, the moon always follows us.'
Nice moon shots, thanks~
Husband wonders why I am chuckling out loud...I just read Art James comment and caught my pen name starring back at me. How he knows me so well, I'll never know. Back in the day, I could play a mean game of girl's softball. Could run a lot faster then, too. Now, I'd rather be tagged, as Art so aptly pens across our OS playground. Who's up next?
Thank you for this fascinating bit of reporting. I had no idea the Extreme Super Moon was so extremely super in Miami!
Yeah, bass chicks are easy but they're really bad kissers!
I wrote about the super moon weeks ago. Just not here. But you take the cake with the actual pics! We had the storm of the ages with 50-60 MPH winds last night and got no moon at all, so thanks!

errrrp! Was our storm one of the disasters? aiiieeeee!
I forgot to look, I hope it's still there tonight!
When I saw the headline I figured you had some shots of college kids in Miami pulling a major league prank! I see that is not the case and you have some nice shots here along with the Photoshop image that makes me think of scenes from the movie Zathura from 2005.
I'll see you on the dark side, of the.....
My sweetie, a photographer and avid science enthusiast, took a look last night and said, Bah. I asked if he would photo it for the archive and he said, I'll just use another shot. It's the same moon.
Art, thanks for the poem.

catch-22, I think I've seen that cartoon.

Jeanete DeMain, things get big in Miami.

Fred Hallman, and they smell too.

Xenonlit xl, sorry I missed your post and I'm sorry you missed the moon.

Scanner, the moon will but it will be further away.
Larry, thanks for dropping by. You don't know how hard I resisted doing just that.

Abrawang, not if I see you first

Oryoki, only much bigger.
Cats never get into pictures by accident. They do it on purpose. EVERY TIME. (Unless you're trying to take a picture of them, in which case... *blur*) Nice shots here!
J.P. Major, you are so right. They just make it look like an accident. Ty 4 dropping by.
That's one big moon!! Did you invite it in for cookies and milk?

I did!!

:D
LOL that first one was really just great. Thanks for sharing. I was just leaving the Tavertines at dusk in Pamukkale when I was the moon rising. Will post that soon. Best...
Tink, not put it gave me some cheese.

Algis, ty. I can't wait to see your moon.
Too bad you didn't shoot this thru your screen door, then you'd have had a waffle (a moon thru a screen door -- one of the few things I learned in college)
Tom, there you go giving me ideas again.
Those are beautiful pictures of the moon and of your cats. Thank-you for sharing.
Kimberly, thank you.
I just can't stop looking at that first photo--LOVE it! (And the others are beauties, too!)
Clay Ball, thanks for dropping by. I'm glad it made you laugh.
Gotta love the moon in all its embodiments--serious and silly. rated
