A Country at Half-Mast

Rate: 20 Flag

It’s all heating up again and no matter where you turn, people are getting really snippy and confrontational. Yes, I’m talking about the political arena. The 2012 elections are bearing down on us and there seems to be no escape from the constant chitter-chatter and sniping back and forth. It’s enough to make man or woman wish for a remote control to fast-forward through all the impending mayhem.

Just so we all know where I stand on this matter before I take off on this rant, allow me to state unequivocally that I am not excited about ANY – I repeat, ANY – of the choices looming before us. Nay, nay. I am downright fed-up, disappointed and ready to wash my hands of the entire mess. And what a mess it is. Yes, indeed, and not a fine mess either. No, this is a mess of epic proportions, the likes of which have not been seen since the Great Depression. A muddy, sloppy, scary, monstrous mess.

From my perch here on the mountain-top of myopic self-interest, (and don’t give me that hairy eyeball, either; like you don’t sit on the very same perch) what I see looks a lot like a recipe for certain disaster. I don’t know about you, but my mother always taught me to take responsibility when I broke something. Fess up and make it right, she always said. Frankly, I can’t remember the last time one of our illustrious politicians (who are charged with representing the people who voted them into office and with working for the common good of the people) stood his ground and said, “The buck stops here. I broke it, or helped break it, or maybe didn’t even break it, but I’m here to fix it. No more blame game, no more political spin, no more jockeying for position. I’m here to roll up my sleeves and get to work on solving this problem.”

You can’t remember the last time either, can you? Of course you can’t, because it hasn’t happened any time in recent memory. Now, let’s name a few names, just to make it interesting. President Barack–hope and change-Obama. His rallying cry has been that he inherited this economy from President George Bush. Fine, great, no problem. But almost three years later, I don’t think anyone could successfully argue that the country has experienced any hope; a lot of change, sure, but hope? Not so much. So, when does Obama plan to step up and own this economy?

Next name: former President George Bush. I made the statement once that Bush spent us into oblivion. Obviously I completely underestimated what that term actually entailed. I do believe we’re seeing it now.

Another name: Tea-Partiers – words almost fail me. Do we really need another extremist political group wreaking havoc in the middle of the most unstable political and economic arena that the majority of us have ever experienced?

Where are the men and women who are willing to go against the surging tide of Us vs. Them and find a way to cobble together viable solutions? Where are those who truly want to see this country be great again; enough so that they will put aside personal ambitions and personal gain to forge a path through the wilderness in which we now find ourselves? Can the US even produce that kind of public servant anymore? I question whether that is even a possibility.

And that, my friends, scares the living daylights out of me.

Kim I can't argue with a thing you say here and personally I have adopted the same attitude about politics and politicans that I have with piles of horse shit in my pasture.....I refuse to debate anyone over which pile is better than the other. Same with our political scene, to me.
I can't believe I got in here!!! Well, things are so bad I'm going to see The Help to distract me! Seriously, I don't see any political help forthcoming either. The blame game needs to end.

Good entry, hope some more see it!
Seems to me the way the American system of government (and of choosing candidates and electing them) is good for negativity and makes doing anything positive infernally difficult. (For instance, it's easy to blame Obama for not having achieved much change, but the office of prez comes with lots of shackles and few powers.) Prosperity caused by the WWII effort and aftermath (which left the rest of the western world in worse shape) gave the U.S. a great boost (just like unlimited land and resources before that). But all that is over - no more western expansion, and resources have to be fracked out of the ground or sucked out of the Gulf, and the rest of the world has caught up in many ways, so America is no longer up there on the hill...
I agree with every word.
Yep. I had a whole roomful of co-workers last week talking about how they won't vote for "any incumbent" - and that included the 2 people I know are not rampaging right-wingers. Does that mean we get President Bachman? Yikes. Scary. I am scared. Officially.
Great post. A leader, any leader would be wonderful right about now. None that I can see on the horizon.

But Torman, if you kick over a pile of shit, sometimes you find worms to go fishing with, you know what you get when you tip a politician over?

Tink and Torman - yeah that's da ticket!

I blame Lee Atwater and Karl Rove. Maybe it's just me. We let our emotions and prejudices drive elections. We act as though there is nothing more to worry about than the possibility that someone may get help or who they sleep with. Meanwhile, the whole damned barn is on fire and no one seems to be letting out the livestock. There is an important concept absent from our collective mind these days, "United we stand divided we fall". Divisiveness has reaped tremendous gains for a select few but has been disastrous for the majority of us. The notion is deep in many minds that there is a war over the soul and the direction of the U.S. one that will forever preclude the other from power.
I feel like you have been reading my mind, and probably channeling the thoughts of much of the population. Why are so many leaders watching to see which way the wind blows before they speak? And why do so many of us fall for easy answers insteading of looking for honest, thoughtful discourse? Thanks for this.
A plague on both their houses. Unfortunately, they're they plague on all our houses (if we still have one . . . ).
Kimberly, I think you give voice to the consternation and anger that a whole lot of people feel, people who are wondering "just how did we get to this place of political paralysis and ideological rigidity?" Things seem so regressive rather than progressive, and civic virtue, which at bottom is the capacity to care about the good of one's fellow citizens, seems to have disappeared. It has been said that wisdom requires humility, but an awful lot of what we see and hear is clamoring egos.
Such great commentary. Thank you all.

Torman - I responded to your comment yesterday, but my comment disappeared. OS - pffft! Anyway... piles of horseshit, indeed. A very apt comparison.

Joan - I really try not to think about it very often, but how can we not? We're circling the drain.

Buffy - I can't believe you did either. I can't believe I'm in here this morning - keep waiting for it to crash! Yep, the blame game has gone on for too long. Unfortunately, it seems to be the new standard.

Myriad - one thing's certain - America is definitely no longer "up there on that hill."

trilogy - it's scary to think about

Laura - if that's the case, we're totally screwed.

Scylla - We all keep waiting for a leader to magically appear. Don't think one's coming.

Art - I'm fed up, too. And yes, I'm happy to say I don't count myself among the rabble-rousers. Too much at stake here for that kind of bullsh*t. Thanks for coming by - always a treat to see you here.

Tink - maybe we should all be sharpening our "living off the land" skills - fishing, hunting, etc. God only knows where we're headed.

toritto - good to see you here!

bobbot - very astute observations - your analogy about the barn on fire is right on. And this: There is an important concept absent from our collective mind these days, "United we stand divided we fall" - how have we allowed ourselves to lose sight of that? But indeed we have. Great comment!! Thank you.

sophie - "honest, thoughtful discourse" - yeah, when was the last time we saw any of that? We have lost our way as a nation.

Pilgrim - so true, so true...

Jerry -great observations, Jerry. Civic virtue, humility and wisdom all seem to be missing from the equation when it comes to our politicians (I almost said "leaders", but I can't call them that. Never that.)
Politics is all about who gets to play with the money, people they are not concerned with as you can see. It is no different anywhere else. You vote to keep what little you can and more or less the worse of the 2 evils. Be well Kim and be safe..........o/e r*
o/e - I remember the first time I voted in a Presidential election - I was so excited and full of expectations. I was full of idealism - of course, I was very young, too, so the two go hand-in-hand. But the past two decades (or three?) have stripped me of any of that idealism. I'm sad for our country, for what it has become.
In 1984, fed up with all the choices, my friends and I voted for our friend Cathie's Dad. We all wrote in his name. He is long dead but now she is encouraging us to write in her brother's name. "Junior for President. He needs a job." Seems just as good as any other candidate.
Bernadine - How funny. On that same note - remember Pat Paulsen's faux bid for the Presidency? Maybe we should all write in our own names. Makes as much sense as anything else we'll see on that ballot.
I think the economy was much worse than most people think in January of 2009. Obama has been in office for 2 1/2 years.

And he did inherit the worst economy since the depression. He took on the biggest problem in the country -- rationalization of our health system -- and accomplished more than generally admitted.

He also was personally responsible for killing Bin Laden, winding down the Iraq war and putting an end date on the Afghanistan war. Further, he managed to avoid putting troops in Libya, while still bringing down Gaddafi. The exact inverse of Bush.

Finally, he had a Republican congress this year that was actively trying to destroy the US economy through intransigence.

And, I'm not even a LIBERAL.

Count me in as part of the 40% that still approves of Obama's leadership.
I just can't bring myself to watch or think about this crap. If it wasn't so damned serious it would be hilarious.
I don't know, Nick. You might want to check you tag. You sure sound like a liberal. Actually, I don't think it much matters anymore what label someone wears. There's still way too much squaring off against each other for my taste. I don't see any positive change in the economy and that's my acid test for whether Obama is a pass or a colossal fail. I guess you can figure out where I stand on that.
Thanks for your well-considered comment. I always appreciate it when you come by.

Mimetalker - yeah, it's a conundrum. I hate to think about it, too, but sometimes it just jumps on top of me.
anyone with a wee bit of sense is terrified. I'm trying to work on my stoic face but it's failing me. A good rant. I give it four stars and one rating.
Thanks, Dawn. Me, too, but stoicism has never been my strong suit.
Oi vay... this is how I got into trouble a few weeks back with a co-worker. I've just now figured out what I wanted to say to her (go visit my page for the latest). Never mentioned politics though. Will NEVER go there with her again.

You are SPOT ON girlfriend. Where are the people with the balls to make decisions based on what is the right thing to do for this country and her people?! I'm thinking the only way to affect change is to pull a Libya and go postal. Denounce and debilitate. Oust the emmer effers and start all over again. Sounds a bit severe, but what else will work?
Kim,
Until you and I and others of like mind join together to make a change, nothing will change. WE ARE the ONLY CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN. We must make our voices heard.
Great, insightful post... time for action, no longer will our words make a difference.

I think this is right on. We are indeed at half mast and lets hope it does not go any further down the pole either.
