Harold and Maude

Rate: 17 Flag

If you see Harold and Maude when you're eight or  nine or ten, you laugh at a few of the gags and you perceive some of its suprising depth of feeling. But until you've had your heart broken once or twice, you can't really get it. That's the beauty and joy of having your mother round you up and take  you to the movies every time this Hal Ashberry sleeper came to town. With each viewing, more details emerge and you feel yourself growing up with this screwball, gorgeous, romantic comdey.

Harold's seventeen, and Maude is 79. Harold is depressed, and Maude has an irrepressible spirit and lust for life. Throw in a disturbing and clueless mother who wants Harold to stop pretending to commit suicide and start thinking about his future, the Vietnam War, ghosts of the Holocaust, and arguably the best soundtrack by Cat Stevens, and you have the makings of a memorable and touching movie night.

Everyone should see this movie once.

If you want to sing out, sing out.
A gem, indeed. Everyone should see this movie twice.
My must-see movie list is growing. I've added this one to it. Thanks!
When I was a teacher, it was one of the required films for my seniors. There are so many wonderful one-liners that I had each student find his or her own (I called this searching for "life lines") and they had to design a poster around it.

And what's not to like about Ruth Gordon, Vivian Pickeles and Cat Stevens?
This was the movie I would take guys to see in my twenties as a double feature with King of Hearts. It was shown with Bambi Meets Godzilla as a cartoon during the imtermission. Men who couldn't get these movies I was pretty sure would not be able to get me either.

I think everyone should see these movie repeatedly.
It *is* a great movie! Love is love, and the crazier the world is, the more you need it.
This is in my top 25 list, but I have issues with Maude and her canonization by many who watch this movie. (No one has done that here, but it is something I run into with other fans of this flic) I first saw this movie as a teen and have watched it dozens of times since. Ultimately I had to conclude that Maude is an evil fraud who damages Harold as much as his horrible mother. Yes, taking morbid Harold and getting him to live is to his benefit, but it is impossible to justify her secretly betraying everything she teaches him about the value of living. Beyond Maude's abusive ways, the Cat Stevens sound track, the hearse Jag, and the lone Vietnam protester scene make it worth watching. monkey fingered.
Ah, those were the days. One of my favorites, too. As well as "King of Hearts," which Susanne mentioned. Took my mother to see that one when she was visiting, even she enjoyed it thoroughly!
BBE, I guess you could look at Maude that way. To me, the story really belongs to Harold and not so much Maude. She's kind of a conduit for him breaking away from his mother, a passing fancy into a broader life? But personally, she reminded me a lot of my great-grandmother (minus the sex and stuff, of course) and it was the spirit of the film that makes me go back every once in a while. Thanks for the comment and the simian finger.

Lisa, rent it and have a good time. Do not read any spoilers!

Susanne, was this when you lived in Denver? Cause we'd see the double-feature with King of Hearts too. We were probably there together. I was the nerdy awkward blonde girl with glasses.
No, you're wrong.

Everybody should see this movie ONCE A YEAR.

Thanks for the ode to another of my favorite films. Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort are just wonderful together.
This is a good one, yes.
I've never seen this but always meant to. Added to the list!
A favorite of mine, and one of the best movie soundtracks ever!
They were showing it that way in Washington, DC. I would have been the other nerdy blonde girl with glasses.
I love the scene where she throws the ring into the water. It's such a great illustration of the subversion of "normal" behavior to a motive that's pure and beautiful.
I love the scene where Harold's uncle tries to get him to join the service and then salutes the flag by pulling a little string that raises his prosthetic arm!
It was H&M that triggered my full-blown case of Black Comedy Addiction.
Too bad we can't all get together for movie night. It would be fun seeing this (or any other) movie with such a fun group.
"Harold & Maude" is one of my favorite movies. It is totally bizarre, unique, and brilliant. Rated for nominating "Harold & Maude" - a genuine masterpiece.
Sorry for popping in here late - but must comment: I adore Harold and Maude. Bud Cort was just here last month at a special showing - I wish I could have attended. He's a pretty unique individual hisownself.

But yes - at least once every year it must be viewed.
