Snow, again, photos

Rate: 29 Flag

road

This is Dill Brook Road, Petersburgh, NY, just down the hill from where I live. On my way to town (Bennington, VT), I picked up a hitchhiker. He was probably in his 70's, with a broad, curling, white moustache. He opened the car door after staring in at me, probably determining that I seemed harmless.  I said, "Where's your coat?" He told me he was wearing it. He had on two flannel shirts. I guess he was warm enough. It was only in the 20's F, certainly not below zero like it had been a week ago. After shoveling snow today, I was hot enough to take off my clothes and roll around in the snow like one of my dogs. I refrained, however. My luck a school bus would have driven by.

tent

Anyway, the hitchhiker said to me that we were having a winter like the old days. He has lived here all his life. This is my partner, Bill, who spent Sunday shoveling snow from our wood tent top (here)

window

and the top of our house. We have several roof leaks already this season.

trees

Here are a couple trees from our yard. We live on 70 acres of woods. It sounds glamorous, but the isolation gets to me sometimes. So, as I've said here before, I talk to the dogs.

window2

Here are those trees from our house window.

windshield

One of our mutts, Buddy, who stands a couple feet high and is 80+ pounds. I took this photo today, as he digs in the snow framed by standing windshield washers. If you are not accustomed to snow, you might not be aware that keeping your wipers upright is a way to help preserve them in the winter. I just replaced the driver's side wiper last week.

  markertree

The dogs and I walk daily in the woods, unless there is ice. The last couple of weeks, I have worn snowshoes. Right now, I stick to a path. There is so much snow that most of my "land markers" are covered with snow. For instance, all of the stone fences are no longer visible. Here is one of our marker trees, that is, a tree that is distinctive enough that I know where I am. This tree bends, almost having a seat that is now covered with snow. Today, I turned around at this tree, taking this photo.

gloves

A problem with taking photos is having to take off your gloves. I paid big bucks for these a few years ago. I have never regretted it.

walk

A downed tree from our walk. You can see the above marker tree on the left.

dill brook

The first photo above is Dill Brook Road. This is Dill Brook, mostly snow covered.

  Highway22

This photo is a scene off Highway 22--a two-lane state road where I picked up the hitchhiker.

  treeside

Another one of the trees in our yard. Somebody here said he wasn't sick of my tree photos, so I'm sharing my favorite.

tree3

This tree stands behind the two I featured above. It is more difficult to see from our house.

ice

This photo is from Petersburgh Pass, which is up another mountain, on the way to Massachusetts, maybe about 10 miles from our house.

yellow

And as everyone knows, don't eat yellow snow.

fabulous photographs, all of them. i don't have a favorite - just can't stop paging up and down and looking at them again. i've got great gloves, too, though i only need them when i travel *to* snow - they're the most important thing, aren't they? thanks for this.
I was JUST going to email you to ask where your pictures were.
LE VOILA

and congrats on the EP>>:)
HUGGGGGGGGG
Beautiful country...but glad I get to enjoy it from a snow free zone.
Watch out where the huskies go!
The picture of the figure looks like a cockatoo. A beautiful white cockatoo! Beautiful pics!
beautiful. We're sorta neighbors and you just taught me something about windshield wipers. Thank you. Really.

I just cleared off the various roofs and dormers and whatnots so I'm pooped out. stay warm. I'm too tired to take off my nasty old snowboots.
Fantastic pictures. Was the hitch hiker a real person or a ghost? Just wondering.....
gorgeous pics, as usual
congrats on the ep!

(and you go around giving rides to hitchhikers! you are brave!!)
Absolutely gorgeous! Don't you just love the way lots of white snow and sun make the world look so clean and beautiful?
Gorgeous to see...safely away from all the snow...at the moment : )
You just made me cancel my fantasy plans to move south. Love the gorgeousness of nature you've captured, tempered by your dry wit, Sheba. (But, you pick up hitchhikers?? I don't doubt you can handle yourself...but...it's my mother in me :)
I wish you would find employment as a professional photographer ! That would be perfect solution for you. Great pictures, as usual, Sheba. and thanks for the windshield wiper tip. I didn't know.
Beautiful, but I'm glad I don't have to shovel all of that! (although I'll be doing my share of shoveling tomorrow!). Also, good words of wisdom to end the post!
Your favourite is my favourite too!
Wow! Such marvelous beauty. I can understand your comments about isolation, but the peace and quiet sounds quite enticing as well. You are a wonderful photographer. Stay warm. R
Beautiful photos! I loved the first shot on the road and the one of the trees framed by your house window in particular!
Great pictures.

Some wipe blade arms aren't designed to bent upright.
(if you hear a snap, you will know)

I bet you'll know what I mean when I say this: I can hear the silence new snow at that depth creates. Beautiful!

Lezlie
Wow. Frigid, gorgeous beauty!
This is so exciting to have an editor's pick and get so many comments. Thank you all. And yes, the hitchhiker was real. I had to hitchhike this summer when my keys got locked in my car at the car wash. I've since disconnected that automatic lock. A young woman with a child picked me up, delivered me to my house to get my extra key and then drove me back. She was so generous, as her daughter was eating an ice cream bar and getting it all over her backseat. I owed that guy.
Sheila, your photos are lovely (although you can keep that snow!) Where I'm at it's ice everywhere and it's raining now which is of course turning to ice. My dogs were hilarious when they went outside today, sliding all over the place.
Jeez, if I lived where you do, I'd try traveling by dog sled! (It's gotta save on the emissions--at least of a fossil fuel variety.)

rated!
These are beautiful, although I could have stopped viewing at the 2nd from the last one...HA -R-
"So, as I've said here before, I talk to the dogs."

What's wrong with that? ;D

Great shots!!!

And congrats on the EP and the Cover. Woooo.

Right now, we're just sitting with a lot of rain!

Suppose to be up in the 50s at midnight then tomorrow, highs only be in the 20s!!

UckyIce!!
Stunning. Please trade places with me.

We'll be 68 degrees tomorrow and then 34 tomorrow night. Insane!
Great photos until the end! yuk!
Your beautiful photography makes snow look so inviting. I had to pull out my recording of Sarah Vaughn's "Snowbound".
Thanks for sharing the photos of snow. You've certainly captured the feeling of living in a place where snow shapes your world.
You sure make me feel the cold!!
When I saw your photos yesterday, I was inspired to go out and take mine. Thanks.
A New England Snowscape from the Green Mountain state...
Gorgeous photos, and hooray Vermont! My husband and I got married at the Putney Inn in 2008. Thinking of moving to VT in the future.
