Listen to Susan Boyle's Inspiration: Elaine Paige

Rate: 25 Flag

The Susan Boyle phenomenon has me doing the Snoopy Dance of Utter Delight, just like everybody else.

What really tickled me is the fact that she's raised visibility for one of my favorite British songbirds: Elaine Paige, whom I've adored since I snapped up the original Chess concept album in the mid-80s.*

In 1993, Britain's The Independent said of Paige's vocal style [that's her own quote at the end]:

'Of all the singers who've sung ["Memory," from Cats], none has matched Paige for uplift and intensity at that big modulation into the final chorus. When the voice really opens up at the top, the tone is so bright and focused and penetrating that it sounds just like a pure belt - straight from the chest register. It isn't, of course. And this is where we get technical. The trick, the skill, is in disguising the natural break between the chest and head voices: 'Whatever kind of singer you are, you should never be able to hear the gear changes. One voice - that's what you strive for. It's really a matter of strengthening the head register so that when you move from the chest into the head voice and start mixing the two, the quality of sound is just the same.'"

Susan Boyle has the same kind of pure transparency between head and chest, and that is no small feat. I am tickled as a trout to hear her sing.

So, if my North American OS friends have never heard of Elaine, nor heard her sing, here you go. I've rounded up a few videos so you can get it all in one place. Because I'm dedicated TO YOU.

(Don't miss the non-Elaine bonus track at the end...)

Memory (Cats)

I Dreamed A Dream (Les Miserables)

Nobody's Side (Chess)

Mountain Duet (With Tommy Korberg) (Chess)

I Know Him So Well (Chess)

And finally, the big Thank You Gift for sticking around this long!

You may think you've never heard of Chess...and yet, I assure you, if you were conscious in the mid-80s, you know at least one song from the work, which was composed by the two "B's" in ABBA--Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Anderssen.

The plot of the album/musical is a deliciously over-the-top  Cold War drama; Russia and the U.S. go head to head in the Big Chess Match! The American is an Asshole! His assistant (Elaine) is conflicted! The Russian is Hot! Love Blooms! Defection! Oh crap, he's MARRIED?!

The context for this song, which has puzzled more people than it ever had the right to:  The arbiter of the Chess match is cynical about the neutral host city and uninterested in indulging in its pleasures: He's just there to make sure the game is clean.

One Night in Bangkok (Murray Head) (Chess)

Hey, it's a beautiful Sunday and I should be out enjoying it. But no...no, my love for you, my OS friends, has confined me to this chair, with this cup of tea, for at least thirty whole minutes.

Enjoy.
Hey! I thought you were going out to walk the dog?! I just wanted to be the first one to comment here even though I haven't read it yet. Rated in advance. Now get outside!
I saw Elaine Page in Evita on the London stage and while I didn't think much of the musical, I loved her. Truly magnificent voice and stage presence. Now I can't get that damn Don't Cry for Me Argentina song out of my head.
[tucking my tail between my legs and scampering outdoors...but...but, cartouche, I had some new posts to read, see, and OW! OUCH! DAMN IT STOP HITTING ME WITH THAT BRICK I'M GOING I'M GOING!]
I hated "Cats" but loved Elaine's voice and passion (and that dress - it's got my name written all over it). Les Miserables is still one of my favorite all time shows. But could you settle this once and for all? I think it's Paige and you have her as Page in the title but Paige in the post. Do I have to know this for the test?
See, if I hadn't ducked back for just a moment I couldn't have changed the headline, could I have? :-)
;)
Go forth and scamper.
She's good but I have to tell you I prefer Susan Boyle. Thanks for reminding me of the days when MTV showed music videos.
Yes, it is a beautiful Sunday, and I too should be out, but posts like these intrigue me. --rated---
Ms. Paige now has a new fan. Thanks, Verbal...
Thanks for these. I confess I like Susan Boyle's version of the Les Miz song better, too, but I think it's about the poignancy she brings to it, the sense that these aren't just words for her, but real feelings about her life. She's also plainer, less show biz in her interpretation, and that appeals to me -- I get why Paige does it bigger (the musical theater style) but it's not as appealing to me as a more natural style of singing.
I love the musical Chess! I thought I was alone in that. I had a cassette in the 90s and listened to it over and over again. I replace my overlistened to cassette with a CD and took it to work and someone took it! I've looked for a copy to replace it and it's no longer in print. thanks for your post.
The selfless sacrifices you make on our behalf is nothing short of miraculous It is both endless and complete. I for one, adore your generosity and inspiring ability to continue to give the highest quality when a mere mortal would have fallen away long before.
You are both a great pleasure and a endless treasure surpassed only by your stunning beauty and superior intelligence. I bow before your graces for I am but a simple man. I feel unworthy in you presence.

BTW, Never heard of Elaine Paige. Where have I been? (I told you I was simple) She is phenomenal. Thanks for the wake up call, VR.

PS. I have been outside several times today and Cartouche didn't even have to tell me. Nanner, Nanner.
Geez, I thought I was the one person in the world who bought _Chess_ when it came out.
See, Rodgers, THAT is the kind of appreciation I expect from EVERYBODY IN THE WORLD.

Look at Michael, everybody. He has snivelling and cringing down to an art form!

:-D

Emma, I cannot tell you how I am jealousing that you got to see Elaine do Evita. Damn.

Hatcheface and Silkstone--I adore Susan's purity. She came by her voice honestly and didn't go crazy (yet) training and overtraining. I've read that Elaine trains every day, which is actually critical for somebody who belts like she belts at the high end (proper technique protects the vocal cords), but Susan's clean, elegant delivery is marvelous, and I plan to get in line to buy her first CD.
It's funny you should post this because the first thing I did after listening to Susan was hunt down the Youtube videos of Elaine Paige. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed, Flamingo. Anita and Diotima, I've now purchased that damned album at least 5 times in my life; vinyl, cassette, and at least two CDs. Might it be available through iTunes?

Linger away, JK. :-)
You should hear me grovel.
Thanks so much for bringing this fine singer to light for me. I am also pleased by your description of the dynamics around the natural break between the chest and head voices, which is, in fact, something I always wondered about.
Oh my God. Thanks for the last video; I feel like I'm just about ready to graduate from college...
Rob, my dear, once upon a time in college, an entire van-full of us theatrical types (heading from Northern Missouri to Arkansas for some fool Creative Dramatics/Oral Interp. competition or another) sang the Entire Damned Soundtrack, back-to-back. Nearly rocked the vehicle off its axles during One Night in Bangkok. :-)
You just give and you give and you give. . .!
(Seriously---this was great. All new to me)
This was great. Thanks for this!
Loved Susan Boyle, but I must admit I had no idea who Elaine Paige was. Thank you so much for blogging this. She is pretty damn amazing.

rated.
Very cool...thanks for finding these videos.
Thanks for the treats! A truly gorgeous mezzo-soprano voice and emotive as all get-out.

And you really hit the nail squarely - talking about chest and head voices. There’s real work in there. My wife does session-singing, and one thing you do not want to hear are all the warm-up exercises to lube those gear shifts.
I wish I could have learned to sing, hell I wish I could have learned to write. I enjoyed this.
Thank you so much for posting this. I was curious about Elaine Page after Susan Boyle mentioned her -- and now I know.
Thank you so much for this! My sister has been an Elaine Paige fan forever and she has turned me on to that fabulous voice whenever possible!

Wonder why Elaine is so unknown to us. Your feelings on Patti Lupone, Betty Buckley, others who might be compared...? Or, better, who do you think does?
Patti LuPone: Melodramatic shrieker. Can't stand her voice outside the context of Evita.

Betty Buckley: A wonderful Grisabella, but I've never felt the need to purchase anything she's recorded.

The only American female working in this genre whom I love as much as Elaine (i.e., have donated a few bucks to her bottom line) is Audra McDonald. And because she's an alto, there's really no comparison.
OMG OMG OMG! I haven't even listened to any of the Elaine Page stuff yet...but I was just listening to One Night In Bangkok the other day...thanks for the video :D
