Get an Assault Weapon for Free

It was humorous to watch a CNN reporter attempt to control her outrage as she interviewed a Missouri truck dealer who, without any pretense of political correctness, explained his sales promotion scheme that promised a free AK-47 semi-automatic rifle to each purchaser of a new pick up truck from his dealership.  The promotion drew national attention and was anticipated to help move some pick ups, according to the dealer.

What seems to push many reporters over the edge and away from objectivity, is the lack of understanding of  the term "assault weapon”.

Based on the questions they ask, it is apparently to most gun owners that many reporters, generally do not have any working knowledge of guns  that would help them communicate more accurate information to their audiences.  The reporters or journalists seem to think that “assault weapons” have the unique ability among firearms to kill human beings, and therefore, a firearm that must be eliminated.

They routinely report that some murder was committed by a person using an assault weapon, a weapon made especially for killing people.  While that statement might be true in a literal sense, because it was developed for military use, it only tells half the story.  One might also say that it was developed to stop people from being killed, or to defend helpless people.  It depends what message the reporter wants to convey.

Many other common firearms are more lethal than assault weapons and are not classified as “assault”.  It would be more accurate to report that the assault rifle is one of many rifles, shotguns, and pistols that can be used by evil people to do evil deeds, however, our forefathers saw the need for an armed militia and considered the trade offs worth the price of freedom.

To provide a general understanding of guns, the following is a basic explanation of gun types. There are three basic types of all handguns, rifles, and shotguns:

  • Single shot.  Firearm capacity is one bullet, shell, or cartridge.  Once a single shot is fired, it must be reloaded.
  • Semi-Automatic.  Firearm with capacity for more than one bullet, shell, or cartridge.  Can be fire multiple times by pulling trigger each time to discharge each piece of ammunition.  There are semi-automatic pistols, rifles, and shotguns used for hunting, sport shooting, and personal protection.  Many semi-automatic weapons will accept clips, which can hold multiple bullets, shells, and cartridges.  A simple .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle may hold a clip that holds 50 cartridges.  The same is true of larger caliber weapons, like .223, .30/.30., or .3006.
  • Automatic.  Firearm with capacity for multiple bullets, shells, or cartridges.  Can fire multiple times at rapid rate by pulling trigger one time and keeping trigger depressed.  Automatic weapons are illegal unless a special gun license is obtained.
An assault weapon is simply a semi-automatic weapon that is used or was used as a military weapon.  It can inflict no more human damage than a semi-automatic hunting rifle or shotgun. In fact, the larger caliber hunting rifles can inflict more damage than a smaller caliber assault rifle.  A common semi-automatic 12-guage shotgun used for hunting for fifty years, has a five shell capacity and can injure more people when loaded with buckshot, quicker than an assault weapon and; it can be bought from Wal-mart.  What makes the shotgun dangerous is that it can fire a shell that holds many ball bearing size lead or steel pellets that can hit multiple victims with one shot.  Categorizing a legal firearm an “assault” weapon is attempt to demonize one type of firearm over another to fulfill a strategy of a death by a thousand cuts to our second amendment rights. With this strategy making some progress, might it be used in other areas in the future?  Will we be hearing names such as “Killer SUVs”, “Suicide Burgers”, and town hall “assassins”, soon?
