What seems to push many reporters over the edge and away from objectivity, is the lack of understanding of the term "assault weapon”.
Based on the questions they ask, it is apparently to most gun owners that many reporters, generally do not have any working knowledge of guns that would help them communicate more accurate information to their audiences. The reporters or journalists seem to think that “assault weapons” have the unique ability among firearms to kill human beings, and therefore, a firearm that must be eliminated.
They routinely report that some murder was committed by a person using an assault weapon, a weapon made especially for killing people. While that statement might be true in a literal sense, because it was developed for military use, it only tells half the story. One might also say that it was developed to stop people from being killed, or to defend helpless people. It depends what message the reporter wants to convey.
Many other common firearms are more lethal than assault weapons and are not classified as “assault”. It would be more accurate to report that the assault rifle is one of many rifles, shotguns, and pistols that can be used by evil people to do evil deeds, however, our forefathers saw the need for an armed militia and considered the trade offs worth the price of freedom.
To provide a general understanding of guns, the following is a basic explanation of gun types. There are three basic types of all handguns, rifles, and shotguns:
- Single shot. Firearm capacity is one bullet, shell, or cartridge. Once a single shot is fired, it must be reloaded.
- Semi-Automatic. Firearm with capacity for more than one bullet, shell, or cartridge. Can be fire multiple times by pulling trigger each time to discharge each piece of ammunition. There are semi-automatic pistols, rifles, and shotguns used for hunting, sport shooting, and personal protection. Many semi-automatic weapons will accept clips, which can hold multiple bullets, shells, and cartridges. A simple .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle may hold a clip that holds 50 cartridges. The same is true of larger caliber weapons, like .223, .30/.30., or .3006.
- Automatic. Firearm with capacity for multiple bullets, shells, or cartridges. Can fire multiple times at rapid rate by pulling trigger one time and keeping trigger depressed. Automatic weapons are illegal unless a special gun license is obtained.
