I Mean, How Long Does It Take To Hire an Art Director?

Job posting:  Salon’s looking for an art director

It was several months ago that I discovered Open Salon.  I may be wrong, but it seems that I remember seeing that same ad for an art director for Salon back then.

They must not be looking that hard.

I mean, how long does it take to find an art director anyway?

What are they looking for anyway, a PhD. in website visual arts, with 5 years experience working in the Louvre?

Somebody at OS or Salon wrote the ad, I assume, to communicate a sense of urgency when they wrote,” Alert”.  One would think reading the ad that the last art director just ran out of the building and must be replaced within 48 hours.

From reading the posts, it appears that there are numerous talented, unemployed, and creative people who must have read the ad and responded by now.  Salon must have received a million resumes.  Can they just pick out the best thousand and then close their eyes and pick one?

Maybe it is a diabolical game that some employers are playing with the ten percent of the country that is unemployed.  My daughter, who just became a CPA in Atlanta, tells me about great interviews that she has,  after which, never to hear a word from the employer again; and yet the firm continues the search for months afterwards.

Candidly, I do not any idea how many web artists work at Salon that need directing, maybe hundreds.  But hopefully this post will motivate someone at OS to let us in on the details and one day answer the most important question since, “Are you a racist?”; “Why hasn’t Salon hired an art director yet?”

You have to remember that OS probably doesn't provide health insurance for its employees.
Salon Media Group (SLNM) sells for $0.09 per share. The company was more or less bought out a couple of years back, just to keep it operating. My guess is the pay is pretty much a title, a laptop, and high-speed connection to their network. Maybe a copy of Photoshop. They probably have a health insurance benefit, but a sucky one.

Still, it seems like there's 10% of the workforce that would jump at the chance, if only to get a laptop with Photoshop.
TT, you're right. I failed to see the link and I failed to appreciate the eclectic whatever. After I read the job description, I knew even less. You guys are operating above my paygrade. I'm just a simple dirt salesman, (commercial real estate developer). Thanks for the explanation.
I was thinking the same thing the other day, I mean WTF! Maybe they want a rocket scientist but are offering peanut pay, and in SF it's hard to live on peanuts. I dunnaknow.
My thoughts exactly. (Love the Louvre remark!)
