I was perusing online news on my lunch break today when the following title caught my eye: "'Social Network is epic and intimate at once". What the fuck? Another WTF moment came when the author stated the director and write of the movie came together to create an epic tale. Are we serious with this shit? Ironically, my current Facebook status is "When did the word 'epic' become the word du jour???". For real though, when the hell did that happen??
Dictionary.com defines epic as "heroic, majestic, impressively great, or unusually great size and content". And in regards to film and literature, epic is "any work of literature, film, etc, having heroic deeds for its subject matter or having other qualities associated with the epic". So.....Social Network has some heroic deeds attached? Hmph. I'm sure it is no Ten Commandments. That I believe is an epic film.
Everywhere I look something is epic. A few weeks ago, a friend of mine said she had an epic first date. Current standing? That date of hers turned out to be an epic fail. (See what I did there?) Another friend of mine posted on Facebook that her art show was going to be epic. What happened to great? Fantastic? Awesome? Fuck, what the hell happened to rad? Well...that one pretty much died once the '80s ended. Anyway, not everything is epic people!!! That new TV show you caught last week with the drama and the sharp dialogue? So not epic. And you know what else isn't epic? That opening of that hot new club/bar you went to last week. You want to know what IS epic? War and Peace. You know what else is epic? When Moses parted the Red fucking Sea!!!!
The overuse of epic has chafed me raw and left me with a throbbing headache. Is epic the new hip word to interject in your daily dialogue? I didn't get the memo that epic was the new "it" word to use. (I also didn't get the memo that the stonewashed jeans I rocked in the '80s are ok to wear in 2010, same with Wayfarers but I digress.) I hope epic is just a flash in the pan. Like Vanilla Ice.
I feel a bit better now that I have gotten that off my chest. I'm off to have a most EPIC night.
