I am six feet two inches of rippling muscle, wavy blond hair, sparkling wit and two-fisted defense of Family Values and the American way of life. (I did say that I write fantasy fiction, didn't I?) Maxfield Parrish (July 25, 1870 – March 30, 1966)

Maxfield Parrish was one of America's most beloved artists working during the "Golden Age of American Illustration." He achieved incredible artistic renown and critical acclaim during his lifetime and has continued to interest new audiences ever since. His prolific body of work has been reproduced in books, calendars, art prints, advertisements, and magazines for generations. His paintings and murals always utilized a unique juxtaposition of designed elements, luminescent colors, photorealistic subjects and romantic images which combined to captivate his viewers.

In 1905, Parrish's met Susan Lewin, a 16-year old girl hired as a nanny for his son Dillwyn. Her image appears often in paintings from this time through the 1920s. Over time, Susan became Parrish's assistant, model for his paintings, and eventually his lover. His wife, Lydia, and Maxfield grew increasingly estranged and she left him in 1911. Susan stayed with Maxfield for another 50 years.

Maxfield Parrish so dominated the images America loved that in the 1920's one out of four homes had his world of make-believe hanging on their walls. In a survey taken in 1925, van Gogh, Cezanne and Parrish were thought to be the three greatest artists of all time. Consequently, Maxfield Parrish was the single most popular American artist of the early decades of the 20th century. The continuing demand for his art prints today indicates America's fondness for his fantasy images.

GIRL WITH NO EYES
It's A Beautiful Day

There's a girl in my room and her face on the wall with no eyes.
There's a girl in my room and her face on the wall with no eyes.
Girl with no eyes,
who can she be?
Girl with no eyes,
she's looking at me.

There's a girl in my room and her face on the wall with no eyes.
If I make a sound she'll know that I'm stirring inside.
If I make a sound she'll know that I'm trying to hide.

Girl with no eyes,
who can she be?
Girl with no eyes,
she's looking at me.
Beautiful girl,
who does she see?
Beautiful girl,
she seems to be staring.

Doesn't eveybody know, everybody know,
love takes a lifetime.
And doesn't everbody know, everbody know,
love is the eye sight,
it's the eye sight of a lifetime.

She's just a reflection of all of the time that's gone by.
She's just a reflection of all of the time I've been high.

Girl with no eyes,
who can she be?
Girl with no eyes,
she's looking at me.
Beautiful girl,
who does she see?
Beautiful girl,
she seems to be staring.

Doesn't eveybody know, everybody know,
love takes a lifetime.
And doesn't everbody know, everbody know,
love is the eye sight,
it's the eye sight of a lifetime.

I have "Ecstasy" on my mantel even as we speak.
I have always truly and deeply appreciated Maxfield Parrish, though in certain circles I find I get critiqued for that passion. Thank you for posting this. Rated.
Beautiful, Mr. Gallant. I've enjoyed very much your series of artists so far. I can't wait for the surprise.
I LOVE that dragon! Thanks!
Van Gogh, Cezanne and Parrish - wow. That's so interesting. I guess there will never be another golden age of illustration like that one. Kind of sad. I never had any aspirations to being an artist, but egad, would I have liked to be an early 20th-century illustrator. Parrish's landscapes transfix me.
So lovely! Thanks for sharing these.
