To Live!

Rate: 6 Flag

My favorite movie:  To Live (1994) starring You Ge and Li Gong, directed by Yimou Zhang.

To Live!

Why is this my favorite movie?  (I usually loooooove really dumb stuff like Life Aquatic!  I just saw Hamlet 2 and adored it)  Well.....

This film from China tells the story of a man and his family's survival over several decades during various incarnations of the Communist Revolution?  It's simply beautiful and engaging.

It fascinated me.  What if I had to live through turmoil?  What if I had to struggle to get by?

And look what's happneed!

Just think, in the years ahead I may have to really use my wits to survive--just like this guy!

Yimou Zhang also directed Ju Dou and Raise the Red Lantern.  I love those films as well, but for some reason To Live has stuck with me somewhere in my gut:

What would I do if....?

May you live in interesting times, indeed!
This looks like one I missed...
I love all of Yimau Zhang's films too!
很好! By coincidence this one is currently in my Netflix queue and I can't wait to see it. Gong Li rocks.

I agree that Ju Dou is another good one. And there's a Zhang Yimou film called Not One Less that is similar to Ju Dou, but remarkable for the non-actors that play all the roles.
I don't think I've seen that one. I'll have to put it in my queue. Thanks!

The more I think about movies, the more I realize I love!

LA Confidential, I think is perfect...but then I think of Richard Farnsworth and I ponder over The Gray Fox and Babe...and what about the Natural or Field of Dreams. I just received Vicky Christina Barcelona, Frozen River and Nick and Nora's infinate plalylist. I think I'll have a great weekend!
Indeed, indeed, indeed, Mme Paddle! Looking forward to Netflixing this recommendation.
Zhang Yimou and Gong Li were one of the great director-actress collaborations both on and off the movie set. To Live has historic sweep and psychological depth and a wry, poignant sense of humor. It really is masterful work.
Thanks for the comments! I'm glad to see that there is interest in the unusual.

I have to say I've enjoyed reading other's choices and thinking about good cinema--good stories. It's great fun to read the posts and the comments. I was talking to a friend about Man on Wire today. That's another film that makes me think--not the planning of the film, but about the power of the mind and about balance.

Thanks again for coming by.
