As I was driving from work, through Beverly Glen (a beatiful canyon road that runs through the hills--Beverly HIlls) it occurred to me that it's been really cold today--58 at 3:30 p.m. in Westwood said the local public radio reporter. 58. Those Open Salon people would think I'm a baby.
We held the gardening class in my classroom today because of the wind and the cold. A few kids didn't have jackets on. Most of the kids would have been fine working outside. The Garden Lady would have been fine too. She was hit by a car last week but is still coming to campus to keep up the beds. Our school is loaded with flowers and veggies because of her. It's a one-woman beautification project. She told me our school won a prize for our garden (really due to her volunteerism.) So she would have been fine trekking all over the campus, even with a bum knee because she's dedication personified.
But the rest of us are babies.
We were going to work with the worm bins today out by some vegetable beds. After they've produced compost you have to seperate the worms out and put them in new bins with the new old-stuff you want to decompose. It's one of the most fun garden jobs for the kids (and for me too--you really get to see who is the wussiest kid with this activity and this is quite amusing.) But it was LA cold so we sat in the classroom and ripped up newspapers and old paper bags to put into the bins as the Garden Lady explained about worms--how you don't use earthworms or nightcrawlers, how good worm pee is for the compost, how the compost can't be too alkaline or too acidy (I think that was where some of the kids sort of zoned out into a paper ripping meditation.)
She went on and on about how composting and organic gardening is better than using chemicals. She tried to teach Kingdom, Phyllum, Genus, Species and about Phosperous, Potasium and Nitrogen. The kids ripped paper and kept warm. She sort of yelled over the ripping.
Tomorrow it will be in the 60s. We will definately go outside and gather worms. 50s during the day is cold here. You'd think it was winter again instead of spring.
