An Autumn Day
A few weeks back I had the chance to take my camera for a walk in Quebec City. Autumn isn't really my time of the year (I generally prefer the hot months), but there is something beautiful about an old city at this time of the year...
Good morning...
black sweater zipped up high
under that heavy leather jacket
its collar turned up to ward off
the encroaching chill
of an early autumn morning.
curls pulled back
one or two stubbornly escaping
dark-rimmed glasses in
crisp, angular contrast.
eyes shimmering, focused
off in the distance… Read full post »
Ghoulish Delight
Nothing better than a Halloween party to provide a living laboratory for my on-going experiments with low-light photography. There's something about the grainy grittiness of it that appeals to me.

This was not staged, though I doubt I could have set it up any better if… Read full post »

Breaking through...
It's been a few weeks since I've managed to string together a piece I felt was worth posting. It's been a good and happy time for the most part, so I can't really complain. But it has also been frustrating not being able to effectively translate the moments I'd like to… Read full post »
A Civilized Shoot (Warning: Photos!)
This past weekend, my son and I headed off to explore the Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, QC. We had five hours, two cameras, one excellent picnic lunch and almost limitless possibilities. As an added bonus of sorts the museum staff were on strike, which effectively cut down on the crowds.… Read full post »

Epitaph to a Goldfish
As dictated to me by my darling boy earlier this evening, in commemoration of our now deceased (having lived a long and full life) goldfish.
In lieu of a small plot in the garden, we settled for the more traditional flush and the creation of a small memorial.
October… Read full post »

Expiry Date (RESPONSE: Anatomy of a Poem)
In a recent post, CarolinaBlue50 proposed an interesting writing exercise, converting a paragraph of prose into poetry. As he describes it:
bliss
Someone recently observed that we had let our Thursday haikus and cinquains slide.
In the spirit of Adelaide Crapsey, I offer a revival of our fading tradition...

Language with the Power to Heal

The following Op-Ed piece in the New York Times by John Aloysius Cogan Jr., executive counsel for the Rhode Island Office of the Health Insurance Commissioner, caught my eye.

Cogan plainly illustrates that most of us don't know wh… Read full post »
Strings & Things
Stringed instruments can be as interesting visually as they are musically...
(The instruments shown in the first three photos are hand-crafted from unexpected and recycled materials. )

Making a Tradition: Black Currant Jam
I have loved black currants since childhood. Black currant juice, black currant syrup, black currant jam—you name it, I love it. Gin & tonic is elevated to new heights by a touch of liqueur de cassis. With practise and experimentation, I have developed a Kir martini that is not sweet, just/… Read full post »
Rhapsody in Blues...
Summer has finally arrived in these parts. The timing was perfect: I had a day to myself and decided to take my camera for a walk. Montreal is a city of summer festivals (we pack as much outdoor living as we can into the warm month!) so I headed off to… Read full post »
Visual Jam
This past weekend I got to play in the presence of some truly gifted people. They enjoyed their musical medium while I played with capturing bits of interesting low light. While I play with light and shadows a great deal outdoors in daylight, this was a new set of conditions for… Read full post »

Reflections
I often try to take pictures of the things that are less tangible, more fleeting...reflections and light and darkness and illusions. These are some of those.
