I’d Rather Live in a More Perfect UNION than a Busted one!

Rate: 1 Flag

I had a recent Facebook ‘fight’ with a lady who took offense at my reference to her having grown up on the “fruits of a union paycheck.” We exchanged several shots, she took me to task often, at times harshly, and eventually I just gave up. We haven’t corresponded since, but along the way…

I told her that I took threats to my ‘union’ Constitutionally. She asked what I meant by that, I told her that the first great goal of the U. S. Constitution was to “form a more perfect Union”. She told me that she had studied constitutional government in college and the words I quoted were strictly a reference to the act of moving away from the Articles of Confederation (which had been in place since 1781.) I told her she had underestimated her adversary and that really pissed me off. End of discussion. We haven’t corresponded since, but I can’t help thinking…

If her interpretation is correct, then those words would be in reference to something past. A system which did not work, that we were leaving behind. I have always believed that this document was meant to be a blueprint for our success, not a document that held empty references to past failures. Obviously we don’t belong to the same political party, she and I. And if she actually studied that in college, maybe she went to the wrong school. We managed to have all of these exchanges just before the troubles in Wisconsin began. We haven’t corresponded since, but I am pretty sure that…

I do not know who will win the current ‘labor battle’ in Wisconsin (or America), but I believe it to be the greatest ‘labor battle’ of my lifetime; and I am a seasoned veteran. I do not know who will win the current ‘labor battle’, but I do know that any benefits will be easier to keep than they will be to get back. I don’t know who will win, but I pray it will be the side that honors labor, the side that cares for children, the future. I don’t know who will win, but I personally would rather live in a more perfect union than in a busted union!

I'm with you. My union has made my life considerably better. I'll never apologize for being a union member.
