Bio
I am a twenty-something Tlingit/Athabascan woman. I never plan on leaving Alaska. And - though I wouldn't have thought this was any kind of issue until recent inquiries - am straight, and always plan on being straight, as well. :) I am not married and have no children, so I frequently take children from my friends, spoil them ridiculously, and send them back. I've also begun to write my first book.

Alaskans show up in huge numbers to protest Palin

Rate: 44 Flag

Wow - the "Anti-Palin" protest at the Anchorage Loussac Library today was IMPRESSIVE. I kept trying to get a wide shot, but there were just too many people!
I was running late and was worried I'd missed the whole thing, but this thing was huge!
And by the way, thanks Eddie Burke!
I talked to five people in a row as they left who said they heard about it from "that news story" about Burke's calling the anti-Palin organizers "socialist maggots" on his radio show, and giving out their phone numbers to have his listeners call them. Many callers threatened the organizers, and KTUU at least ran a story on the local news about it.

I was also worried not many people would show up - Alaska rallies no matter what the cause just are never that big. If you get a few dozen people, it's a good showing. Outside on a kind of dreary day, I was hoping there would be at least a hundred.
I've heard early reports that it could have been 1,000, very easy to believe. Having just been down in Denver for the Dem. Convention, where we witnessed some somewhat disorganized protests, it was pretty neat to see so many Alaskans coming together to voice their opposition in an impacting - and peaceful - way.
Though APD had a presence, their biggest problem was making sure there wasn't any jaywalking going on.
You could hear them a few blocks down, and saw the crowd before you even saw the flashing police lights.

I was also expecting a lot more "pro-Palin" protestors. There were a handful, but not that many.
Burke had said he was organizing a "pro-Palin" rally for the same time and place, but they were much less evident than those opposing Ms. Palin as a VP - or simply supporting Obama.
I had to run and do a bunch of errands before the banks closed, and drove by over an hour later. Although much smaller, there was still a good hundred or more holding signs and garnering lots and lots of car horns.
There's a whole lot of Anchorage folks who are very against the McCain/Palin ticket.
 _
UPDATE: The numbers are in!
Anti-Palin rally = 1400+
Pro-Palin rally = 93
I have also heard from people that attended the Palin rally that Palin herself attended - the protest very well may have them beat for sheer numbers.
 _
UPDATE: The numbers are going every which way, but it looks like the Pro-Palin rally attended by Palin was beat out in numbers by the Palin protest (by nearly 2-1). If the numbers seem small to those of you in the Lower 48, just remember, going by the numbers we have up here (very small) - the rally was the equivalent of 50,000 people showing up in LA.
Some other great Alaskan blogs that covered the rally (and are continuing coverage of our governor.) Some even have video.
Also, the Anchorage Daily News commentary about her lately. By and large, our state's biggest newspaper has a lot of editorials reacting to the national media attention, going, "Who on earth are they talking about?"

So f***ing cool. Things like this make my life bearable.
Thanks for this insider look at something I didn't even know was happening, and still wouldn't if you hadn't written about it. It's nice to have a "friend" who lives in Alaska!! Sarah Palin may not win, but Alaska certainly has.
Writing Raven, please keep us posted, this is so wonderful.
This gives me hope! Great work, Writing Raven, keep it up -
Thank the Lord. I was beginning to wonder if we as a country have lost all our sensibilities. McCain's specious ads drive me up a wall. I see the blatant pandering and rehearsed sound bites yet a good (bad) percentage of my associates and extended family members are pro-McCain/Palin. I hope (pray) that protests such as these are the spark that will ignite an inferno of clarity and realization.

Keep on posting!
Nice work Alaskans! It's good to see the "other side" of the great frontier represented.
Have you run across people who are scared to oppose Palin? That story is getting attention now. . .
Thanks Anchorage, its good to know that there are others in Alaska who feel that Ms Palin is not the be all/end all of the state. From the sound of the news media everyone here loves her. Its not so, although many Alaskans are not willing to say much as she has a nasty penchant to be intolerant of any criticism. I would be happy to have her in some other job, rather than giving away our natural resources to the Canadian tar sands folks, but I really don't want to see her extending the Cheney rule in Washington.
Chicago Guy - YES. There are plenty of people who feel they can't speak out against her because she would make life miserable for them. More humorously, there were some state employees who attended, all in "disguises" with signs that said things like, "The Sarah I know would have me fired for this" and stuff. Less humorously, I have talked to many people who want to speak out, but fear for their jobs, reputations, or projects. For instance, I have talked to a few Native leaders who don't want to speak out because they believe (with reason) that she will then veto funding or retaliate some other way.
Excellent job, Writing Raven. Hope is thriving in Alaska!
Thank you for this post! :)
This Palin VP thing just a stunt being staged by the sexist creeps who run the GOP to make it look like anti-choice women with 5 kids aren't screwed, blued and tatooed.

Half the women (other than those born rich) who take this route are completely dependent on a husband's whims.

The other half are divorced and on welfare.

Oh, and the rounding error 0.0000001% of women who have taken Sarah Palin's choices in life -- are VICE PRESIDENT!!

Ha!!

Only in the fake reality TV show called the GOP Show.

Everywhere else, you have 5 kids, you could pop up pregnant at any moment -- and you can't get hired to run a McDonald's late night shift. You can't get hired for any responsible position. You can't get promoted. You can't pay your child care bill. You can't live. You eat government cheese.

That's the logical result of her attitudes, actions and choices and the GOP KNOWS IT. That's why they are promoting her as some kind of model -- to send more women crashing through the trick trapdoor we just saw Bristol disappear down into.

17, pregnant and married -- that's what McCain wants for ALL of us. And this whole show proves it.
Hey, this turn out is great. So much of the news on Alaska makes it sounds like everyone loves her policies. For the first time last night, I saw a news report that alluded to some of the unrest.
What a great post, and a great example of individuals actuing as journalists. Thanks so much!
This gives me renewed faith in Alaska (and perhaps the rest of us!). Thanks for sharing.
Keep up the good work. Most of us (ok maybe it;s just me!) know very little of Alaska
Awesome! Thanks so much for posting this. The pictures really bring it home.
This is a 'windfall' shot to cure the liberals from their depression since the 'ascension' of Palin on the political proscenium of America. But like all windfall events it will not be lasting. Only the impending demise of Barrack Obama on November 4, will be lasting.
I can smile before going to bed tonight. Thanks!
Great post! I first saw this story at Huffington Post; there were two posts about it, one by "mudflats," that included a lot of photos on his/her own blog.

The photos are worth the time it takes to check them out...

Thanks for the on-the-ground report!
Bless your heart! Keep me informed!
This site is so retarded. All of you bias and worthless people have nothing better to do but bash the conservatives. Palin is amazing. She has actually made something for women and her life.
Thats great it needs more press!
Joe Smith,

If you don't like what's on television, change the channel. If you don't like reading intelligent people's discourse, than don't. No one is forcing you to be on this site, you know.
Very encouraging to hear the whole world hasn't gone crazy!
Our blog talks about what we are doing in southwest Virginia: http://gilesforobama.blogspot.com/

Voters are beginning to see the truth about Palin. I have a more private blog revealing my discussions with neighbors about what they fear most:

Take the fight to Palins home turf.

Send Joe Biden to Alaska!

It seems to me that Alaskans are becoming increasingly dubious and disenchanted with Palin/McCain. The Alaskan Obama supporters there deserve the encouragement, support and attention!

Get Senator Biden some serious media attention by sending him to a rally in Alaska.

Highlighting the groundswell of vocal opposition to Palin in Alaska could significantly help undermine her national appeal and the McCain/Palin ticket.
Small Wolf Pups all over Alaska are howling for joy - their parents are avenged!
Wow! 75% of Alaska Voted for her, 80% approval rating, and the "Journalists" could not find anyone who liked her or things she did???

Give me a break, protesters are always the ones who are whiners and are not producing for this country. I'm real sure that Gov. Palin is evil and she found the other evil person in AK to marry, then had 5 evil kids... It so moronic that people can not be happy for her and her acomplishments with her values.

Small towns rule!
Fly over country will get McCain/Palin elected.
The 80% approval rating was from May - before Troopergate, before the VP madness. She's in the 60's now - no shabby thing - considering she just gave $1200 to every single Alaskan, on top of the over $2000 we were already getting. If you want to see where the best polling places to go in Alaska are - check out Best Buy. Her "energy rebate" did little to stem the actual energy crisis, but every Alaskan who now has a big screen tv thanks her.
I'm not saying Ms. Palin doesn't know how to pander.

Very few people mention that her highest approval rating came after she unseated governor Murkowski - extremely difficult considering that during his time in office, he had the LOWEST approval rating of any governor in America - 20%. He was scum, and even the Republican heavy Alaskan lawmakers could not support this long-time (R) D.C. politician turned governor. Palin was not the only one to get more votes than him - he came in a distant third to the democratic candidate. All she had to do was walk in and NOT be Murkowski, and people worshipped her.

She also just signed the deal for a gas pipeline. If you want to know what Alaska politics is all about, its not about social issues - sexual assault numbers, violence, drug prevention, even education (she has a horrible record on all of it) - it's about oil and gas - MONEY. That's why the indicted Ted Stevens could very well get re-elected - he's brought in unprecedented amounts of money to the state.

Some other facts about Alaska:

Worst domestic violence rates in the country
Worst sexual assault rates in the country
Worst incest rates in the country
Worst child abuse rates in the country
Worst alcohol abuse rates in the country
Worst suicide rates rates in the country

But we keep electing the same politicians. You think it's not really about how much money gets brought in?
Not true - again. Ivan Moore's polls showed Palin's popularity in Alaska 'slipping' into the high 70s in July but the last poll he took just before she was selected as VP nominee was at 81.6% positive.
So..... 0.0020895522388% of the population in Alaska that are democratic Obama supporters show up for a rally?

BFD!!!
Palin's polls are dropping like a rock. No matter how the McCain campaign tries to hide her, scandal leaks out like garbage in a grocery sack. At the debate, the bottom will fall out.
Go, Joe!
This made my night! Wow!
How incredulous is this report?
If you look closely at the pictures you will see
pro McCain\Palin supporters as well as anti McCain\Palin
demonstrators.

I guess all you have to do anymore is take some photographs
Of Obama\Biden supporters and insert a nazi flag and say
"Look at all of the nazis that spport Obama!"

Is Obama running against Palin or McCain?

You twentysomethings are no more than extensions
of your college indoctrinators!
It is a compliment to Raven's powers of observation and courage in reporting that all is not well in Palin's Alaska that her posts seem to attract more than their fair share of troll's personal attacks and outrage.

Keep up the good work, Raven!

Oh, and if 54 is your age webber, I am your elder.
I'm new on Open Salon. This is a beautiful sight! Thank you for posting it! It makes me very happy to see this!!
Do the Main stream Media Outlets know about this?
Just shows you what a terrible decision maker that McCain is, what did he do put all the names of a possible VP into a hat and Palin's name was first? And he wants to be our next president!
