There is a housing style that has been used around the world. It consists of a floor that is mounted on stilts which keeps most of the ground bugs, reptiles, and animals out. It is also  a good defense against other humans getting in.

The style is called many names. Grass hut and crannog are two of the most famous. The style of construction can now be said to have existed from 8500 years ago until now. It is still a popular building style in asia.

Cities were created using this technique. One I think we all know of is Venice. One that is debated is White Horse in the Yukon.

The one that was just uncovered apparently was part of one of those villages. Among the things that make it so exciting is it's age and the fact that the floor is made of planks that were split from logs with wedges and hammers and then hewned smooth which was traditionally done with an adze and was a trade in its' self.   Wow!  Carpentery back then! Now imagine doing this with stone tools. Would you like to chop down a large tree by beating it with a rock? It's not like those axes were as sharp as the ones we are used to.

An 8500 year old boat paddle was among the objects that have been found so far. I've seen dugouts there that are 5000 years old that were found around there. But this is 2500 years before that. Going back 2500 years from here would be 490bce. Something made then tends to set us back much less 8500years. Stonehenge won't be started to be built for another 4000 years which is something like the time distance between Moses and us. WOW!

Here's the article.

---and so are you
This IS really interesting...nice photo and illustration, that helps me imagine living that way...thanks!
Fascinating. My cronnog or yours? R
On second look at that illustration, I think I have lived this way! : )
Very interesting. (I love this stuff...)
I've long been fascinated by round buildings - kivas and such as that. Thanks for this great history lesson!
just---i had trouble getting my wife to go see on then i had trouble getting her out of it. it was the one on the top. tent camping today isn't much different is it.

n.k.m.---cave man want now!

myriad---you were just at the spot of some of the most famous.

kit---kiva's were cerimonial. round supposedly allows the protocol of sitting around a fire. but most of the hunting camp structures were very much like this. Long term teepee like structures were as common as longhouses many were raised structures.
That is amazing. R
it really is amazing
once you get a good feel for the time span it's incredible.
8500 years from now it will be 10,510.
where do think we'll be?
Wow! I am such a history geek. I wanted to be an archeologist when I was growing up until I found out I would be in the dust and heat. I live vicariously through the shows such as "Chasing Mummies" and watching the National Geographic Channel. Thanks for having the links! R
libmom----it was my dream too but I get married and had bills to pay. can i go back to about 14 and start over?
Just when you think you've got a right to feel smug and superior....
We knew what we know before we knew we knew it!
sue---a great quote, thanks.
what's so unique about a thatched hut on the beach now?
Wow. An 8500 year old boat paddle. Wouldn't it be nice if things lasted that long now? We'd never need to shop.
