When did life begin on this planet and what was i like is as big a mystery as the question about what is life. I find it humorous that in this case it was an micro-organism found in the town of Beer in the UK that passed the test of being able to life without an atmosphere.
There are many important possibilities for this discovery. Because it was discovered that it could live in space it will become a necessary and welcome producer of oxygen in space. That is important to the replinisment of oxygen during long trips and to the creation of sustainable environments within domes on other planets. On earth it could also have a very important role in putting oxygen into heavily polluted waterways.
On occasion I wonder about the wisdom of the space programs. Then something like this or Velcro comes along and I remember that the benifits are often as unexpected as Teflon. It is said that war pushes innovation. I'll vote for space exploration instead.

linnnn---the definition of life as carbon based and relying on water and oxygen is recently a thing of the past. There are lifeforms on this planet that prove it. Hopefully we'll find a planet where all plant life is made of candy.
And if it were made of candy, may it prove non-fattening and a producer of good dental health!
snark---agreed why do zippers and bra hooks still exist?
As a person inducted into something called aging, with the usual arthritis problems, I'm gonna get the neighbour who does a little sewing for me to change my pants zippers to velcro!!! Do you know how bloody hard it is to get that damn zipper down or up when the fingers have their own idea of what they want to do?!! Yer a genius sir!!
