Untold thousands more were tortured, hung upside-down and dipped in boiling oil, or had their fingernails and toenails ripped out, bottles inserted into the vaginas, etc.

In 1991, as the rebel forces were closing in, Mengistu fled to Zimbabwe where his pal Robert Mugabe awarded him a luxury home and round-the-clock police protection. He still lives there today.
In December of 2006, after a 12-year trial in absentia, Mengistu was found guilty of genocide by the Ethiopian Federal High Court. In May of 2008, he was sentenced to death.
The Red Terror Museum, located on Bole Road just off Meskal Square, Addis Ababa, is dedicated to the memory of those who died at the hands of Mengistu and his henchmen. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
