I used to write about random things on OS, the first place I ever wrote publicly. But the political unrest that began in Wisconsin early in 2011, consumed me. My posts here are now all things Wisconsin either through documentational personal posts of the continuing struggle (which only appear on Open Salon) or through cross posts first published on WIvoices.org. I founded that organization in order to feature verbatim interviews with other Wisconsinites. These primary documents bear witness to the times that we live in and return the power to the people - where it belongs. WIvoices.org.

The Wisconsin Activist

Rate: 13 Flag
Below is a recent email sent by Chris Wondra, a grassroots organizer and blogger, in Wisconsin’s Senate District 10.  He and his wife, Lisa, have been active in the recall of Senator Harsdorf and now in the election of Shelly Moore in her place.  All six recall elections against GOP senators are slated for Tuesday, Aug. 9.  Chris later turned this email into a blog and posted it on his site.  It not only summarizes the blow-by-blow battle for WI, but captures the rollercoaster of emotions that many Wisconsinites have felt for the last 6 months.

This…is the pulse of the Wisconsin activist.

——————————-

Folks,

Some of you are, no doubt, growing tired of of these political posts.  I don’t blame you.

By nature, I’m not that into politics. And truth be told, I grow weary of this fight.

But it’s stuff like this that blows my mind and reminds me to keep shouting.  The truth must be known.

Please read this link: GOP redistricting maps make dramatic changes

With recalls pending, GOP releases redistricting plan: A quick vote . . . before recall elections . . . would let Republicans lock down advantages at the ballot box for the next 10 years by drawing maps in their favor.”

Remember: Today, Republicans own Wisconsin.  Please consider though, who owns the Republicans–and what has happened so far:

  1. Refusal to listen to constituents, even after unprecedented public outcry
  2. Votes and discussion behind closed doors (violated open meetings LAW)
  3. Ignored judge’s orders
  4. Made it harder to vote
  5. Run fake candidates, forcing Democratic primaries and increased the cost of the recall elections by over $400,000
  6. Violence in the Supreme Court
  7. Decimated public education (and demoralized educators) while at the same time funding private schools in Milwaukee and cutting taxes.
  8. Rolled back environmental protections.
  9. Rolled back citizens rights by making it harder for people injured by negligent corporations to get justice.
  10. And now, rushed to redraw the district voting lines BEFORE recall elections–which would give them an advantage for at least the next 10 years.

Let’s be clear.  Republicans OWN Wisconsin.  From the Governor, to the Senate, to the Assembly to the Supreme Court.  They can do whatever they want–without discussion, without compromise, without negotiation.  And this is exactly what they are doing.

This blatant power grab is unprecedented and remarkable.  Anywhere.  And at any time in history.

Let this be another powerful reason why this election is like no other. We have to take back the Senate NOW.  If you think this bit of is legislation is suspicious, just consider what will happen if we lose these summer elections.

You think they are done destroying public education, rolling back environmental protections, making it harder to vote, privatizing government institutions (like schools, prisons, the department of commerce, Wiscnet–the NON-PROFIT internet supplier to libraries and schools) grabbing power at every opportunity?  By their own admission, they’re only getting started.

These are the kinds of political games that people are growing so tired of.  They (Walker, Harsdorf and the rest) are getting beat up in the polls.  So what do they do?  Change the rules . . . again.

Seriously, every morning I think–I’m done sending emails, marching in parades, writing letters to the editor, making videos.  I’ve got a garden to weed.  Bills to pay.  Kids to take care of.  The other day, somebody referred to me as a “good activist,” and I thought, what the hell has happened to me?  I’m out.  I’m done.

This is not who I am.

But then, by the end of the day, I undoubtedly hear or read something else that is happening in Madison.  And my blood boils anew.  I am aghast.  I can’t believe my eyes/ears.

I do this because I am deeply concerned about our families, our schools, our communities, our children, our chances.

Please do what you can, everyone, to understand and then shed the light of truth on Wisconsin.  After all, we are all in this together.  Or at least . . . we used to be.

Thanks,

Chris

So here we are.  The reluctant activists.  The “good activists.”  I’ll be the first to admit - I was a lazy citizen before this time.  Sure I voted in the presidential elections…most of the time.  But I could never be bothered with school board elections, state or local leaders, or even referendums.  It was all too much to bother with.  It was all a game to me.

The last 6 months has changed everything.

Gov. Walker and Sen. Harsdorf’s extreme budget repair bill generated a collective uproar.  A new community of “reluctant activists” began to form, becoming different people than they thought they were. Regular working people, retired people, young people -  most of whom were non-political before this, were instantly mobilized.  They were made up of District 10 people from as far north as Siren and Grantburg as far south as Prescott and River Falls, as far East as Menomonie, and as far west as New Richmond and Hudson.  Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls are like adopted D10’ers… volunteering en mass whenever needed.

We call ourselves “outside agitators”, laughing at the absurd, dismissive title the senator has given her own constituents. We greet each other at each event: parades, rallies, speeches, debates, sign making or letter writing parties, canvassing meetings, and Facebook groups.  You’ve got to give him this much – Gov. Walker is an incredible community organizer.  We have made life-long friends, sharing a journey.  We know that our response, our numbers, and our passion have caught the attention of the nation.  But more than that – we have surprised ourselves.  We didn’t realize how much power there was in citenzery…if we even thought about things like that at all.

And for those of you who read this and believe another way – I hope you understand us a little better.  Search our words, there is nothing here that displays any ill will toward you.  If you have  it hard, too, then we are on the same side.  The same side.  We all deserve better. Instead of fighting between each other, we should turn a critical eye on anyone who would tell us that instead of prospering together, we should “all have to suffer together”.  No.  Not in Wisconsin.  We have too much dignity and love of country to believe that the only legacy we will leave our children is that of suffering and a race to the bottom.  We are too creative of a people for that.  Life is about living…and caring…and listening to each other.

It is time to get back to that.

I heard a report on NPR the other day that said that there has been $30 million spent so far in these Wisconsin re-call elections, most of it from "out of state". I'm assuming that out of state means big-bucks Republican money. If you can take back your statem maybe, just maybe we can take back our nation, one state at a time before its too late. Keep at it Heidi. (By the way, one of these days I'll write the story of how a core group of about a half dozen couples--of which my wife and I were one--took back the local government of Sturgeon Bay in 1988 starting with a write-in campaign).
I love reading this seeing people taking back what is rightfully theirs to begin with. I am watching and waiting for the rest of the states to start adding their pledges to change how our government works.
Heidi, You and your family and all the families of Wisconsin who are fighting for what is right and against the ugliness of greed are a huge inspiration to me. I admire you all more than I can say. I thin the day is coming when we'll all have to be like Chris--we're up against a powerful threat and we CANNOT let the Tea Party win. In a real way, we're fighting for our lives and America's soul. I've been sending money in dribs and drabs to ActBlue, Democracy for America, People For the American Way and MoveOn for the last two months (And I have the credit card bills to prove it!), but the thought of winning these important races on Tuesday is what keeps me donating. (That, and seeing the Tea Party get a nasty shock after their revolting behavior in Washington this summer!)I hope the GOP gets blown out of the water and clear into next month, and will sit there all wet and blinking in shock, wondering what just happened to them.

You BET it is!
It's true of Wisconsin, and it should be true in all 50 States of the Union.
Good luck on Tuesday! To Wisconsin Democrats on Tuesday, first of all, and ALL of us in the long run.

The only other map I've ever seen re-drawn like that was Delay's in Texas, that looked like a jigsaw puzzle, with republicans the winners, of course. I will be watching this with great interest and I am so proud to know someone like you. The governor is next, and then we can all do our "Snoopy Dance"!
oh what a beautiful sight this morning - to see these comments. We are in the middle of the blurrrrrrrrrrrrrr of "Get Out The Vote" (GOTV) which many of you, I am sure, have heard about or participated in. But a GOTV in a WI state election? unheard of. We knocked on over 1200 doors in our area, thousands district wide in the last 2 days. Even rural doors, way out in the boonies, were knocked on 3 times we were told when we approached! If we don't win, it won't be for lack of trying....

Walter - it has been so great learning about other parts of the country in all of this, I really want to read about Sturgeon Bay...in a few days, I'll actually have some time

Lunchlady - you've been checking in all along...great to hear from U

Shiral - I am always so happy to see you hear...your encouraging words are wind under my sails and I smile throughout....

Scanner! The old activist! You are the real pro, I'm sure...so good to hear from you here, at the end, or beginning, of a new chapter...

I won't be able to check back much today...and tomorrow no one rests until the last person has been drug, pushed, pulled, and rolled to the polls....polls close at 8:00 central time.
I am thinking about you all today and tomorrow Heidi, and wearing my Wisconsin Solidarity shirt. I've sent in donations for ads, and wish I could do more. It makes me so angry to see how you are being jerked around by your supposed "representatives" and I am so glad you are fighting back.

You mention school board elections. It bears repeating that the Christian Coalition had a nationwide campaign in the 80s to put stealth candidates into school boards and other low level state and local posts and I believe that this was the beginning of the GOP takeover of state and local government. No, we don't think to vote for school boards and then look how easy it is to stack local government with GOP toadies. We have to vote for EVERY election and even more, we have to run progressive candidates.
it takes stamina to win this. always glad to hear the updates.
Great post, Heidi. And it got me thinking. This week, AMC ran a whole bunch of mob movies. One of them was the Untouchables.

You know how the teabagging sacks of crap all watched "The Town?" It's fitting, given that the movie was about a bunch of bank robbers and the teabaggers pretty much are robbing America.

I think that progressives should watch "The Untouchables" and get inspired by a few lines in the movie. And they certainly are on the same side as the Untouchables were. They are fighting against thugs who will lie, cheat, steal and through their policies condemn people to death.
Hi Heidi, You all are in my thoughts, heart, and prayers. All the best and much love to you for your dedication and hard work on this. No doubt, the Left across the country will need to mobilize to confront these right-wing extremists and stop their march to full spectrum dominance and privatization of the public sphere. You set the example. Hugs, Ron. - R
fight the battles, but don't forget to win the war: a state without an accessible and effective citizen initiative power is no democracy.
Ardee , Tony, dolores, Ron, Al – thank-you for your kind words and encouragement

We lost our election. Statewide, we took 2 of the 6 senate seats back. We needed 3 for a clear victory.

But we moved the ball forward. Forward….we will fight again another day.

Thank-you for your support, encouragement, and your words always –
Heidi
Heidi, you did a great job, it was hard and thankless, but it was also close. We are proud of you. And take a break, but don't give up hope. There's still the Walker recall in January, and we will all be rooting for you!
The battle is long, and you lost this round. But what you've been a part of will not die. And your energy and enthusiasm will carry you forward. And you should know that the whole world supports your struggle in Wisconsin. The wind is still at your back.

I just want to thank you for all of your postings, and I know that you'll continue to be a fighter for justice and equality. And I'm sure that there's more work for you to do. So keep at it with all of your strength and love.
I wish to join those who congratulate you on your participation in our democracy and who are grateful that you and husband did so. Unlike some who have commented above, there is no "losing" when an effort such as yours has been mounted.

You can bet, as the result of your efforts, Harsdorf has received her message; and you can bet that Walker has received his. The question is whether you have received a message from this process as well.

State budgets must be balanced. Walker was clear about what he would sacrifice to achieve that goal before he was elected.

There is always room to disagree about the methodolgy and the programs that were targeted. In the end, it's the majority view which prevails in our system, while recognizing that their duty to consider the objections of the loyal opposition.

Your efforts brought the debate to the streets, which seldom happens now. For that alone, we can all be grateful.
You did a fantastic job with these posts! I feel exactly as you do as a reluctant activist.
